We are currently enjoying watching a series about Hanuman (an incarnation of Shiva) and, of course, about the god Rama.

“What is this series about Hanuman?..” — here.

I also touched upon information about the Parampara in the Ashram — here.

So, what is the Solar Dynasty?

According to the Vedas, the founder of the dynasty was Ikshvaku, who ruled at the beginning of the second yuga in Ayodhya. Ikshvaku was the son of Manu Vaivasvata, whose father was the Sun itself.

Some modern princely houses of India also trace their origins to the Solar Dynasty. Of Ikshvaku’s 100 sons, the eldest, Vikukshi, founded the Solar Dynasty of Ayodhya, while another son, Nimi, founded the second branch of the Solar Dynasty, which ruled in Mithila. The “Vishnu Purana” provides a complete list of the rulers belonging to these two branches of the Solar Dynasty. The beloved Indian hero Rama also belonged to the first of these branches, the Ayodhya branch. Quite a number of Rajput lineages trace their origins to the Solar Dynasty.

Ikshvaku’s direct genealogy is as follows: BrahmaMarichiKashyapa → Vivasvan → Vaivasvata Manu → Ikshvaku.

Thirteen Puranas provide a more or less complete list of the kings of this dynasty. The list of kings appears twice in the “Ramayana” (Ram I, 70, 21–44; II, 110, 6–35). The “Mahabharata” contains only various fragmentary references scattered throughout the text.

Lunar Dynasty

The Lunar Dynasty, or Chandravamsha, alongside the Solar Dynasty, traces its origin to the god of the Moon Chandra (Soma; hence the name Somavamsha) through the hero Yadu, which is why its members are also called Yadava (Jâdavâs — “descendants of Yadu”).

The first king of the Lunar Dynasty is considered to be Pururavas. Many other dynasties descended from this king and his descendants.

The princely houses of Kuru, or the Kauravas, and Pandu, or the Pandavas, belonged to the Lunar Dynasty. Their civil war forms the main plot of the “Mahabharata”. Many Rajput families also trace their origins to it. In ancient times, some descendants of the Lunar Dynasty, as well as of the Solar Dynasty, gave rise to Brahmin lineages, including the famous Kaushika, well known in the history of Indian literature.

Before King Pururavas, the genealogy of the Lunar Dynasty is as follows:

If Vishnu’s previous avatar — Prince Rama — belonged to the Solar Dynasty, tracing its lineage to the sun god Surya, then the Lunar Dynasty now takes center stage, descending from the moon god Chandra (Soma). The first king of the dynasty was Pururavas, but we are more interested in his descendant Yayati. He was said to have had four or five sons by his wife Devayani, as well as numerous visits to the chambers of a maidservant.

The king failed to take into account that his wife’s father was the powerful teacher of the asuras, Shukra, who, to please his daughter, cursed his son-in-law, turning him into a decrepit old man.

However, his father-in-law left a small loophole: Yayati could exchange his old age for the youth of anyone willing to agree to it. That clever person turned out to be his youngest son, Puru.

The Pauravas descended from Puru. The Yadavas descended from his eldest son, Yadu, who had rejected his father’s offer. The eighth avatar of Vishnu would be born among his descendants.

Krishna’s grandfather was King Ugrasena, whom his own son Kamsa imprisoned.
