These are not my words.
The quote was taken from a well-known forum.
The person’s experience, it seems to me, explains a great deal and allows us to see what is not usually discussed. The article is not intended to offend believers in any way.

“So, what exactly is this phenomenon—modern prav****?!
Let us begin with the fact that, as we know from history, this organization was created in the 1940s by Stalin—a great demon and atheist, who, incidentally, graduated from the Tiflis Theological Seminary.
Accordingly, the entire hierarchical structure of this organization was always under the control of the Fifth Directorate of the KGB of the USSR, as part of an ideological structure intended for the mystically inclined segment of the population. All the bishops and patriarchs of this structure were directly subordinate to the state and its party organs. We know from leaks that all these church hierarchs had their own pseudonyms and were all forced to report to their overseers from the special services.

And what about now?! I think little has changed; all the main hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church began their church careers back in the distant 1960s and 1970s.
A couple of years ago, somehow I ended up in one of the churches during one of their festivals—not for spiritual reasons, but for secular ones; I was looking for someone there... I had to stand through the entire service, and what greatly unsettled and surprised me was the oppressive atmosphere of the ceremony (it took place in the basement of a church under construction) and the fact that, like a refrain, they kept saying: ‘We bow, we bow, and we bow to our lord’”to Patriarch Kirill and his representative in the Chelyabinsk Region—Job... and boom, everyone is on their knees. Christ was barely mentioned there at all. In short, I came out of there like a squeezed lemon; the energy drain there was so intense...

I immediately thought of Satanism, with its rituals, reverence for the power of money and strength (all power comes from God), and its cult of personality centered on Patriarch Kirill Gundyaev. The black cat at the entrance to that almshouse was like an infernal gatekeeper at the entrance to the underworld, and I had never seen such infantile, lifeless animals before... So I thought that energy harvesting was definitely taking place there, service to the Russian Orthodox Church’s black egregore—something that, in my view, was one variety of Satanism. I have great love and respect for Christ, but this sect—the Russian Orthodox Church—certainly has nothing to do with him!

Now about those who support this: Yes, they say there are genuinely devout people within the Russian Orthodox Church, among the laypeople and rural priests. Perhaps, but I have not encountered any so far. The ones I have encountered are all just like the Patriarch himself, who preaches rejecting Western values, comfort, and so on, while in reality loving all kinds of luxury goods, from Swiss watches to yachts, Mercedes cars, and villas with beautiful girls. One has to give him credit—not bad taste! But it is all theater, and in my opinion has little to do with genuine faith.

The same can be said of the local inhabitants. Just look at who here is championing For Orthodoxy and traditional values?! I don’t want to judge anyone, but look at their avatars: one has a pretentious woman with a fashionable and expensive American gadget, while the other features a famous cult Hollywood actor... As they say, no further comment is needed.
This is just as the band Nautilus sang in the song “Goodbye America”: “They taught us for so long to love your forbidden fruits...”

That’s the whole modern Orthodox Church right there, from laypeople to priests—in words, Christ and love for one’s neighbor; in practice, foreign cars and the pursuit of profit.
But it has always been this way, so we need to understand what the modern Church is, while not forgetting that at the heart of every religion there are truth and God.
Something like that.

How do you view the Old Believer communities that preserved Christian traditions from before Nikon’s reforms? Can their faith (religion) be considered more correct?

I would not consider a faith more correct merely because it has preserved an old rite. Old Believers are Christians too. They preserved the pre-Nikon church tradition, not the pre-Christian faith of Rus. Old Belief itself took shape after the seventeenth-century schism, that is, much later than the Christianization of Rus.

Looking deeper, it is the same Christian tradition whose establishment in Rus is associated with Prince Vladimir of the Rurik dynasty. And I personally view the princely authorities’ rejection of the former faith and its replacement as a betrayal of Rus’s spiritual tradition. That is my assessment of that choice. Preserving the rites that existed before Nikon does not take us back to the faith that existed before Vladimir.

And conflicts between Christian churches and movements are indeed a centuries-old fact of world history. The division between the Eastern and Western Churches, the wars between Catholics and Protestants, the persecution of Old Believers… The matter clearly extends beyond any single modern church organization. At the same time, I would distinguish between the history of these conflicts and each individual believer.

Therefore, for me, the antiquity of a rite in itself does not answer the question of spiritual correctness. One can carefully preserve old forms and still continue arguing over which people are closer to God.

Here, we need to look beyond faith. The Old Believers went to Siberia and adopted many things there.
Therefore, when people talk about the Old Believers today, they mix their knowledge with Siberian traditions.

No one is particularly concerned with their way of crossing themselves, just as no one is concerned with what they learned from the indigenous peoples of Siberia.
