🔮 ESOTERICISM AND SCIENTIFIC FACTS

Issue No. 1. Ten Amazing Studies

For thousands of years, yogis, mystics, magicians, and spiritual practitioners have spoken about unusual human abilities and mysterious phenomena in the world around us.

Today, some of these phenomena are being studied at universities and in scientific laboratories. Scientists use highly sensitive cameras, magnetic-field sensors, tomographs, and other instruments.

1. ✨ The Human Aura: The Body Emits Invisible Light
Esoteric traditions have spoken since ancient times of a glow emanating from the human body.

In 2009, Japanese researchers Masaki Kobayashi, Daisuke Kikuchi, and Hitoshi Okamura from scientific institutions in Sendai and Kyoto conducted an unusual experiment.

Using a highly sensitive cooled camera, they were able to photograph the human body’s ultraweak glow. Its intensity was approximately one thousand times below the sensitivity threshold of the human eye.

Interestingly, the glow varied across different parts of the body and changed over the course of the day.

2. 🔥 Tummo: yogis raise their body temperature through the power of practice
In the Tibetan tradition, there is a practice called tummo, known as the yoga of inner fire. Practitioners describe the ability to warm the body even in extreme cold.

In 2013, a team of researchers led by Maria Kozhevnikova studied Tibetan practitioners directly in monasteries.

During meditation, the scientists measured body temperature and brain electrical activity.

An increase in axillary temperature to 38.3 °C was recorded. The result was accompanied by changes in brain activity, especially when special breathing techniques were combined with visualization of inner heat.

3. 👻 Poltergeists and haunted places: unusual magnetic fields
Stories of strange sounds, sudden cold, an invisible presence, and other unexplained events occur in many cultures.

In 2003, a team of British researchers led by psychologist Richard Wiseman published the results of a study of two places known for ghost stories: Hampton Court Palace in England and the undergroundof the South Bridge premises in Edinburgh.

The researchers asked visitors to report unusual experiences while simultaneously examining the physical conditions of the premises.

It turned out that reports of strange sensations were distributed unevenly. Their locations were statistically associated with a number of environmental features, including changes in local magnetic fields and lighting.

4. 🧠 Telepathy: transferring information from one brain to another
Telepathy is traditionally understood as the ability to transmit information directly between minds.

In 2019, researchers at the University of Washington presented an experimental system called BrainNet.

Three people took part in a joint computer game. Two saw the game situation and made decisions, while the third received their signals through a system that combined the recording of electrical brain activity with magnetic stimulation.

Information was transmitted from the senders’ brains to the recipient’s brain via a computer and the internet.

The recipient used the received signals to solve the game task.

5. 👁 Mind reading: scientists have learned to reconstruct inner speech
The ability to learn another person’s thoughts has long been attributed to clairvoyants and telepaths.

In 2023, researchers at the University of Texas at Austin published a study on reconstructing the content of thought processes from brain activity.

Volunteers listened to stories while inside a functional magnetic resonance imaging scanner. A computer system was trained to recognize patterns in their brain activity.

As a result, the researchers were able to create textual reconstructions that conveyed the meaning of the stories they heard and mentally replayed.

The experiment used a scanner and a specially trained neural network.

6. 🌌 Out-of-body experience: an unusual experiment in the laboratory
Esoteric traditions contain numerous accounts of astral travel and experiences in which a person feels as though they are outside their physical body.

In 2002, a group of Swiss researchers led by Olaf Blanke published in the journal Nature Description of an unusual medical observation.

During electrical stimulation of a specific area of the brain, the patient repeatedly experienced an out-of-body experience.

The woman reported feeling as though she had been transported beyond her body and perceived what was happening from a different spatial perspective.

The researchers were able to induce similar experiences repeatedly by stimulating the right angular gyrus of the brain.

7. 🌙 Lucid dreams: scientists spoke with sleeping people
In the traditions of dream yoga, there are practices that allow a person to become aware of themselves directly within a dream and retain a certain degree of control over what is happening.

In 2021, an international group of researchers published the results of experiments conducted in four independent laboratories.

The scientists established two-way communication with some people who were in a state of lucid dreaming.

The sleepers were asked questions, including simple mathematical problems. They conveyed their answers through prearranged eye or facial muscle movements.

Correct answers were recorded directly during sleep, as confirmed by physiological measurements.

8. 🕉 Mantras and prayers: the influence of sacred sounds on the body’s rhythms
For thousands of years, spiritual traditions have used the rhythmic repetition of mantras and prayers to alter a person’s inner state.

In 2001, a group of researchers led by Italian physician Luciano Bernardi studied the effects of repeating yogic mantras and Catholic prayer on the human body.

The experiment involved 23 healthy volunteers.

The scientists found that rhythmically reciting prayer formulas slowed breathing to approximately six cycles per minute and increased the coherence of cardiovascular rhythms.

An increase in baroreflex sensitivity—the mechanism involved in regulating blood pressure—was also recorded.

9. 🧘 The power of consciousness: the influence of practices on the immune system
In yoga and esotericism, there are ideas about a person’s ability to alter their body’s physiological processes through internal practices.

In 2014, researchers of the Radboud University Medical Center in the Netherlands conducted an experiment with a group of volunteers.

Twelve participants underwent ten days of training that included breathing exercises, meditation, and exposure to cold. Another twelve made up the control group.

The researchers then injected all participants with a bacterial endotoxin that causes a short-term inflammatory response.

The trained volunteers showed a significant increase in adrenaline levels, increased production of the anti-inflammatory interleukin-10, and reduced levels of several pro-inflammatory markers.

10. 🔮 Telekinesis: controlling objects through thought
Telekinesis is the ability to affect physical objects without direct contact.

In 2012, an international group of researchers published the results of an experiment involving people with severe paralysis of the limbs in the journal Nature.

Microelectrode sensors were implanted in the participants’ motor cortex.

A special computer system converted brain signals into commands for a robotic arm.

During the study, the participants were able to mentally control the manipulator’s movements, pick up objects, and move them space. One of the participants even managed to bring a bottle toward herself and drink coffee from it through a straw.

🔮 ESOTERICISM AND SCIENTIFIC FACTS

Issue No. 2. Ten Amazing Studies

Can a person sense events before they happen? See without being aware of what they have seen? Enter a special state of consciousness that changes the brain’s electrical activity? And can plants produce sounds beyond the range of human hearing?
⠀
These and other questions have long existed in the world of esotericism. But what is interesting is that some of them are also being studied in scientific laboratories.
⠀
We continue our series, where ancient ideas about humanity’s mysterious abilities meet modern experimental research.

1. 🔮 Foreseeing the Future: The Body Reacts Before an Event Occurs
Clairvoyants and psychics often speak of sensing events that have not yet happened. Sometimes this is called precognition, sometimes intuition, and sometimes a sixth sense.
⠀
In 2012, researchers Julia Mossbridge, Patrizio Tressoldi, and Jessica Utts published a meta-analysis in the journal Frontiers in Psychology of 26 experimental studies conducted in different laboratories between 1978 and 2010.
⠀
In these experiments, participants were shown emotionally arousing and neutral images in an unpredictable order. The researchers recorded heart rate, skin conductance, changes in pupil size, and other physiological indicators.
⠀
When combining the results, the authors found a small but statistically significant effect: some physiological responses differed even before the corresponding image appeared.
⠀
In 2018, an updated meta-analysis was published, also reporting a statistically significant effect of anticipatory physiological activity.

2. 🧠 Telepathy Without Devices: Ganzfeld Experiments
Telepathy is one of the best-known abilities described in esotericism. It is associated with transmitting mental images, feelings, and information from one person to another.
⠀
Beginning in the 1970s, parapsychology researchers conducted experiments using the Ganzfeld method.
⠀
One participant was placed in conditions of reduced sensory stimulation: usually with their eyes covered by translucent covers and wearing headphones producing uniform noise. Another person in a separate room focused on a randomly selected image or video clip.
⠀
The first participant’s taskthe participant’s task was to describe the images that arose in their mind and then choose the corresponding picture from several options.
⠀
In 1994, psychologists Daryl Bem and Charles Honorton reported 32% correct responses in a series of automated experiments, compared with the 25% expected by chance.
⠀
In 2024, Patrizio Tressoldi and Lance Storm published a meta-analysis of 113 ganzfeld studies conducted between 1974 and 2020. The authors again found a small positive statistical effect. At the same time, the scientific literature also contains independent studies that failed to reproduce similar results.

3. 👁 Vision without awareness: a blind man navigated around obstacles invisible to him
Esoteric traditions include the idea of inner vision—the ability to perceive the surrounding space without using ordinary conscious sight.
⠀
In 2008, an international group of neuroscientists led by Beatrice de Gelder published a remarkable medical observation in the journal Current Biology.
⠀
In a patient known by the designation TN, after two The strokes damaged areas of the visual cortex in both hemispheres of the brain. The person lost conscious visual perception.
⠀
Researchers asked him to walk down a long corridor containing numerous obstacles—boxes, pieces of furniture, and other objects.
⠀
The patient walked down the corridor, successfully avoiding the obstacles, although he was not aware that he could see them.
⠀
The experiment was recorded on video. Researchers attribute the result to the preservation of visual pathways that allow the brain to process spatial information without conscious visual perception.

4. 🧲 The Sixth Sense: The Human Brain Responds to Earth’s Magnetic Field
Various spiritual traditions contain stories of people who are especially sensitive to the energy of places, the cardinal directions, and invisible natural influences.
⠀
In 2019, researchers at the California Institute of Technology, led by Connie Wang and Joseph Kirschvink, published the results of an unusual experiment.
⠀
The volunteers were in a specially equipped room where the scientists changed the direction of a magnetic field comparable in strength to Earth’s magnetic field.
⠀
All changes were made without visible or audible signals. During this time, brain activity was recorded using electroencephalography.
⠀
Reproducible changes in the brain’s alpha rhythm were detected in some participants when the magnetic field was rotated in certain ways.
⠀
Particularly interesting was that the response depended not only on the direction of rotation but also on the spatial orientation of the magnetic field itself.

5. 🥁 Shamanic Trance: Unusual States of Consciousness Recorded on EEG
Shamans from different peoples use rhythmic drumming, singing, and concentration to enter special states traditionally described as journeys to other worlds.
⠀
In 2021, American researchers published a study in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience devoted to the study of shamanic trance.
⠀
The experiment involved 24 practitioners of shamanic techniques and 24 people in a control group.
⠀
The researchers used multichannel EEG to record brain activity at rest, while listening to shamanic drums, and while listening to classical music.
⠀
During shamanic trance, experienced practitioners showed changes in gamma activity, functional connectivity, and other characteristics of electrical brain signals.
⠀
Participants also reported unusual visual imagery, complex inner experiences, and changes in perception.
⠀
According to the researchers’ assessments, some characteristics of the subjective experiences were comparable to the results of previous studies of altered states of consciousness induced by psychedelic substances.

6. 🌌 Consciousness on the Brink of Death: Remarkable Findings from Resuscitation Research
Accounts from people who have experienced clinical death hold a special place in mystical literature. Some recall vivid images, a sensation of light, an unusual perception of time, or encounters with deceased relatives.
⠀
In 2023, a research team led by Sam Parnia published the results of the large-scale international AWARE II project.
⠀
The study covered 567 cases of cardiac arrest among patients in hospitals.
⠀
Of the 53 surviving patients, 28 were able to complete an interview. Eleven of them reported memories or experiences associated with the period of cardiac arrest and resuscitation.
⠀
Six people described experiences that the researchers classified as transcendent memories of death.
⠀
The data are particularly intriguing EEG: in some patients, during ongoing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the emergence of brain electrical activity compatible with processes of consciousness was observed even 35–60 minutes after the start of resuscitation efforts.
⠀
In another study published that same year by scientists at the University of Michigan, two of four dying patients showed bursts of gamma brain activity after mechanical ventilation was discontinued.

7. 💪 The power of mental imagery: muscles become stronger without physical exercise
Many esoteric schools place great importance on visualization. The practitioner imagines a movement, state, or result so vividly that it seems as though it is already taking place.
⠀
In 2004, researchers at the Cleveland Clinic, led by Vinoth Ranganathan, published the results of an experiment involving 30 healthy volunteers.
⠀
The participants were divided into groups. Some trained physically, others performed exclusively mental exercises, and some formed a control group.
⠀
During the mental training, the volunteers imagined contracting specific muscles without performing the corresponding movements.
⠀
The sessions continued for 12 weeks, 15 minutes a day, five days a week.
⠀
After the experiment ended, participants who mentally trained the muscles that abduct the little finger showed an average strength increase of 35%. In the group that mentally trained the elbow flexors, the increase was 13.5%.
⠀
No significant changes were found in the control group. The scientists also recorded changes in the brain’s electrical signals associated with controlling muscle contraction.

8. 🌙 Dream Programming: Scientists Learn to Set the Theme of a Dream
Various mystical traditions include the practice of dream incubation. Before sleep, a person focuses on a particular question, image, or task, hoping to receive an answer in a dream.
⠀
In 2023, a group of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard Medical School published the results of an experiment on controlling dream content.
⠀
The scientists used a method called Targeted Dream Incubation.
⠀
As participants fell asleep, they were presented with audio cues associated with a particular image. The main theme chosen was tree.
⠀
Researchers discovered that such cues could influence the content of emerging dreams.
⠀
After waking, participants completed creative thinking tasks. People whose dreams actually featured the assigned theme showed higher results on creative tasks related to it.
⠀
The experiment allowed researchers to study not only the influence of an external cue on sleep, but also the connection between dream content and subsequent creative activity.
⠀

9. 🌿 The Voice of Plants: Scientists Recorded Sounds Humans Cannot Hear
In ancient spiritual traditions, plants were often described as living beings with their own sensitivity and ability to interact with the world around them.
⠀
In 2023, researchers from Tel Aviv University published an intriguing study in the journal Cell devoted to the acoustic signals of plants.
⠀
The scientists placed tomato and tobacco plants in special acoustic chambers equipped with ultrasonic microphones.
⠀
They then examined the plants under conditions of insufficient water and damaged stems.
⠀
They found that plants are capable of emitting short ultrasonic signals, spreading through the air.
⠀
Such signals occurred significantly more often in stressed plants than in undamaged ones.
⠀
Moreover, the researchers trained a computer system to distinguish plant species and certain aspects of their condition based on audio recordings.
⠀
The frequencies of these signals are beyond the range of normal human hearing, but special equipment makes it possible to record them.

10. 🧬 Meditation and Genes: Changes Detected in Just Eight Hours
In yogic teachings, it is believed that regular sadhana gradually transforms a person not only at the level of consciousness but also at the level of the physical body.
⠀
In 2014, a group of researchers from Spain, France, and the United States, led by Perla Kaliman, published the results of an unusual study in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology.
⠀
The experiment involved 19 experienced meditation practitioners and 21 people with no meditation experience.
⠀
The first group spent a day engaged in intensive mindfulness meditation practice. The control group carried out ordinary, calm activities under similar conditions.
⠀
Before and after the eight-hour period, the researchers took blood samples and studied the activity of of certain genes in immune system cells.
⠀
After meditation, changes in the expression of genes associated with chromatin regulation and inflammatory processes were recorded.
⠀
In particular, meditators showed reduced expression of the HDAC2, HDAC3, HDAC9, RIPK2, and COX2 genes compared with the control group.
⠀
Some of these molecular markers were also associated with the rate of cortisol-level recovery after a stress test.
⠀
Thus, the researchers recorded measurable molecular changes after a single day of intensive practice.
