SCENE 10. THE PATH WITH HEART
Monday, January 28, 1963
I clung to things the way children cling to sweets. “Devil’s weed” is only one path out of a million. And everything else is also merely one path out of a million (un camino centre cantidades de aminos). Therefore, you must always remember that a path is only a path; if you feel that it is not for you, you must leave it at any cost. To have such clarity, you must lead a disciplined life. Only under this condition will you know that any path is merely a path, and that nothing prevents you—or anyone else—from leaving it if your heart tells you to. But I warn you: your decision must be free of fear or ambition. Look at every path directly and without hesitation. Test it as many times as you deem necessary. Then ask yourself, and yourself alone, one question. Only very old people ask this question. My benefactor asked it of me once, when I was young, but my blood was too hot then for me to understand it. Now I understand it.

—You said, Don Juan, that you no longer need to smoke.
—Yes, I no longer need to smoke, because smoke is my ally. I can summon it whenever and wherever I wish.
—Do you mean that it comes to you even when you are not smoking?
—I mean that I come to it freely.
—Can I do that too?
—Yes, if you manage to make it your ally.
