Makar (or Makara) Sankranti often coincides with the so-called Old New Year.
This cosmic event begins the month when the Sun travels through Capricorn. Essentially, Makar means Capricorn, hence the name.
The mantra of the month is “RAM.” One of the main principles of this constellation is efficiency and scale.
Sankranti means “sacred transformation.” This happens every month when the Sun transitions from one sign to another. The Sun’s movement into Capricorn (Makara) is considered a particularly auspicious day.
Surprisingly, in 2023 we celebrate this day not on the 14th, but on the 15th. This rarely happens. However, over the years this will occur more and more often, since the precession of Earth’s axis (ayanamsha) causes the date of Makar Sankranti to shift forward.
The day before Makar Sankranti (or earlier) is a day of purification. Clean your apartment. Throw away old things.
It is considered beneficial to read about Shani on Makar Sankranti. Shani is associated with Capricorn and is the son of the Sun, Surya. You can listen to the story of Shani in my Ashram — about the Ashram here.
If you like the idea of different New Years, then Makar Sankranti is one of them: the Vedic New Year.
The importance of this day was described in ancient epics such as the Mahabharata, so the day also has historical and religious significance. Since this day is dedicated to the Sun God Surya—the symbol of eternal light, divinity, and wisdom—it also carries a sense of eternity and radiance.
On this day, Kumbh Mela also begins—a very important festival for yogis. It is good to bathe in the Ganges or any sacred river. Here, we also do this on January 19, so this too coincides with the Vedic tradition.
It is also good to honor the ancestors.
