I am studying Ericksonian hypnosis. Its history is fascinating. I couldn't resist sharing it with you.

Why do you need this history?

First of all, it is a true story. It is the very powerful story of a very famous person who made an enormous contribution to healing people. He cured many people with nothing but THE WORD—the spoken word. It is a wonderful and amazing life.

At the age of seventeen, Milton Erickson fell very seriously ill. At the time, he was diagnosed with polio. Erickson was completely paralyzed. He could only move his eyes. That was all. A consultation of three doctors was assembled. They examined the patient, went into the next room, and told his mother that the child would not live until dawn. He heard this, and it seemed deeply offensive to him: no one had the right to tell a mother that her child would not live until dawn. And he decided that he would live until dawn. He asked his father to move a mirrored wardrobe so that he could see the eastern window, lived until dawn, and saw the sunrise. He then lost consciousness for two days, and when he came to, it turned out that he was completely paralyzed.

The family was large. He spent his time either lying in bed or, occasionally, being transferred to a rocking chair. One day, he was forgotten in that rocking chair for several hours. His only entertainment was observing what was happening around him, which is where Milton Erickson's famous extraordinary powers of observation came from. He very much wanted to sit closer to the window so he could observe what was happening outside, but the chair stood far from the window, and there was no one around to move it. Suddenly, he noticed that the chair was rocking slightly. No one could be rocking it, so he must have been rocking it himself—but he could not rock it because he was paralyzed, and yet the chair was rocking. Then he began imagining, mentally, that it was rocking more and more strongly. And it began rocking more and more strongly. Thus, at the age of seventeen, he discovered the ideomotor phenomenon, without, of course, knowing what it was called.

He took advantage of this and began mentally recalling and reproducingthe sensations of movement. Milton Erickson began recalling what he had felt as a boy when he ran, jumped, swam, climbed fences and trees, and so on. He used the ideosensory phenomenon. He fully restored his movements, to their complete extent—so much so that he later crossed several American states alone by canoe in order to strengthen his muscles completely. And this, of course, subsequently influenced his ideas about hypnosis and the nature of hypnosis.

Even after Erickson passed away, he left books behind.

Two special books stand out. When people read them—just read them—someone starts to heal.

Amazing, isn’t it?

I will attach these two books to this post.

They are called:
  1. My Voice Will Go with You
  2. The February Man

Erickson said that absolutely anyone’s psyche is already perfectly fine.

Everything is already fine. It’s like a computer. The computer is fine. Learn how to use it.

Erickson wanted to get closer to the window and see what was happening there. Such a simple, lively goal. Against this background, he notices the barely perceptible movement of the chair, which could easily have been ignored altogether.

It made me think that in working on ourselves, it is also easy to overlook something small while waiting for a major breakthrough. Suppose someone considers themselves inattentive. They sit down to read, get distracted, and immediately pass their usual verdict: "Nothing is working again." But the moment they notice that they have become distracted already deserves attention. They can calmly return to the page and try to understand one paragraph. There is a specific action from which they can continue.
I would not turn Erickson's story into a requirement for everyone to repeat his path....
But this attentiveness as an idea is close to me: before declaring yourself hopeless, take a closer look at what is working after all, even if it is only a little for now. It may seem minor, but one's attitude toward oneself is already different. Even the desire to look out the window in this story proves important—the person retains an interest in the world.
