The Healing Potential of Unusual States of Consciousness

An important event for the scientist was meeting, in 1975, a woman who soon became his wife and was experiencing an unusually pronounced spiritual crisis. Christina was in a state similar to that of a person experiencing the effects of LSD, without having taken the drug. Stanislav Grof carefully supported the process of active spiritual transformation in his wife, which, by Christina Grof’s own account, lasted 12 years. "Being constantly involved in this process, which was taking place in someone so emotionally close to me, opened up entirely new aspects and dimensions that had eluded me when working with unusual states in a professional context," Stanislav Grof writes, recalling those years. The time came when Christina began actively helping her husband. When the use of LSD was officially prohibited, the couple developed holotropic breathwork, which produces the same effect as LSD therapy and is considered more environmentally friendly.

As I have already said, I have incomplete training in holotropic breathwork. I studied for one year to become a sitter—that is, a person certified to conduct these sessions for others (the full training takes two years).
Nevertheless, that one year of study at Grof’s "institute" taught me a great deal about how to enter an altered state of consciousness—not only without LSD, but even without that deep breathing itself.
During my training, I learned that quite a few people did not breathe at all during Holotropic sessions, for various reasons. Some were pregnant, some had heart conditions, and some simply did not want to or were afraid...

They simply ATTENDED the session. That was all.
And they HEALED!

It is a fact.

I am simply telling you this in the context that what matters is the shamanic trance itself. How you enter it is your choice.
