To begin with, what is the winter solstice?
It is the day when the amount of light begins to increase.
Or, scientifically speaking, the length of daylight begins to grow.
Before December 21–22, the night was at its longest. In a sense, one could say that the Earth was immersed "in darkness." And then a "miracle" and an "omen" occur—the night and darkness recede, while the light and day increase...
A little mathematics for those who like to exercise their gray matter:
Christmas used to be celebrated on December 25, not December 22. This was because at the beginning of our era, the solstice fell on the 25th.
In other words, follow the reasoning:
Christmas and the winter solstice used to fall on December 25.
But later, the Julian calendar drifted away from the tropical year, followed by an even greater discrepancy, which was corrected in the 16th century by adopting the Gregorian calendar, and the solstice shifted to December 21–22. However, the transition did not take into account the three days that had accumulated from the 1st to the 4th centuries AD.
It follows that Christmas is more properly celebrated on the winter solstice itself, rather than on the erroneous date of December 25. And certainly not on January 7.
But I haven't yet said whose Christmas it is
