Philosophers readily discuss ethics. Moreover, they distinguish between ethics and morality. They derive morality from the Latin “mores”—customs; ethics, by contrast, from the Greek “ethos,” meaning mood and, accordingly, character.
They think that ethics must be justifiable, and therefore try to make it provable—just consider Socrates’ aphorism: “Whoever knows what is good does it!” They see customs as arising more from the habits and traditions of a people and therefore as pertaining less to their field than to the competence of ethnologists.
I, on the other hand, often use the concept of morality—although in a different sense.
Because I uphold the view that the customs of a people must be pure so that their mood may be pure as well.
People must be taught proper conduct from an early age, and through constant practice it must become habitual.
Therefore, I attach the greatest importance to the need for people, from their earliest childhood, to learn proper conduct—in other words, a way of behaving that they absorb with their mother’s milk.
Therefore, I advise you—and here we need to speak of ethics—to consider today what in your conduct is positive and agrees with My teaching. Hold fast to it.
By contrast, exclude negative tendencies from your life—no matter how dear they may be to you—otherwise one fine day they may destroy you.
Hold firmly to what is positive and moral, in other words, ethical; do not waver once you have made your choice. Ask God for help, and you will be able to free yourself from the heaviest chains. For bad tendencies are an expression of bondage lasting many lifetimes, not of freedom.

You have surely noticed more than once how, with the help of talented makeup, an actor’s face can be completely transformed from one film to another. Much can be hidden, retouched, or attached to one’s appearance.
There are people who know how to make themselves look like angels, although their hearts remain icy. Therefore, be attentive to outward appearances. Do not believe that you could tell from the tip of anyone’s nose what they conceal in their heart. It would not be the first time you had been deceived.
But what must you do to protect yourself from unpleasant surprises? There is only one truly reliable means: ask God for protection and mercy, so that you may come to know your Heart. Whoever knows their Heart can no longer be misled. For the one who knows their own Heart also knows the Heart of every other person.
From this point of view, all delusions, as well as everything called negative, possess something especially useful: they show you how far you have come in knowing your Heart—in other words, how much you mislead yourself and think you know something about which you know absolutely nothing.

Free yourself. Free yourself from your desires. Starting today, examine every desire, and if possible, renounce it.
Always think that you are embodied bliss. That, in fact, you need nothing. That you have everything you need. That you are perfect. What more could you possibly need? Almost all your desires are illusions.
Empty promises of happiness that you could never, ever find. How, for example, could you find apples in a vegetable field? The happiness you seek is within you. For many, many lifetimes, it has been waiting only for you to finally discover it.
But what do you do? You search indiscriminately for apples and other fruits on the ground.
Raise your eyes and you will see that all the fruits, clearly visible and easily accessible to you, are right before your eyes. Therefore, let them go and receive them.
Receive everything. There is no way to receive more than by letting go.
To renounce means to find yourself. Because you are what you seek.

Why do you make your life so difficult? Why do you want to do everything alone?
Why don't you let God take care of you?
The difference between traveling without God and with God is like wanting to travel on foot by yourself or with the greatest comforts. Imagine having to walk all the way from Europe to India with a backpack on your back, a bag in one hand, and a suitcase in the other. What an effort!
By contrast, on your journey here, I am guiding you.
You take off. You travel comfortably. You land in New Delhi, where you can stretch your legs for a while. Then you are in Goa. Before continuing your flight, you rest in an idyllic bay.
On the plane, before takeoff, you meditated. But you were so tired that you fell asleep. You woke up during the flight and asked the astonished flight attendant how much time was left before departure.
You did not even notice the takeoff. Nor did you hear the sharp noise produced by the turbine, which frightened many people. A taxi was waiting for you in Bangalore. The hotel had also been reserved, as had the onward journey to Puttaparthi, where you arrived just in time for darshan (a holy blessing). Or would you rather have walked the entire way?

IF YOU PRAY FOR EVERYONE, YOUR WISH WILL ALSO BE FULFILLED

Sai Baba said: “In this world, there is nothing ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ What is good for you may be bad for another person. What is bad for another may be good for you. So how can you take another person’s opinion into account? You should not think that way.”
Then Swami gave an example: “A wedding ceremony was to take place in one place. Nearby, a farmer was waiting for rain so that he could sow his fields and gather a bountiful harvest. The man preparing for the wedding prayed to God: ‘O Lord, make it so that there is no rain tomorrow, as I am having my wedding ceremony.’ At the same time, the farmer who lived nearby on that same street prayed: ‘O God, send abundant rain upon the earth (Laughter), so that I can sow my fields. If the field is sown, I will harvest the crop and have enough food.’ One prays for the rain to come, while the other prays at the very same time for it not to come.”

“O Swami! You have given a very good example. So what should I do? (Laughter) If something will not be good for another person, should I not pray to You for it? May I ask for something good just for myself?”
—“No.”
—“Swami, then what should I do?”

Sai Baba said: “Pray for everyone. If you pray for everyone, your wish will also be fulfilled. There will be rain to feed the farmer. And during the wedding, it will stop. If your request is selfish, and you pray like this farmer for rain only for your own benefit, then it will be dry everywhere. Or, if you selfishly ask for dry weather, there will be a downpour, and the wedding ceremony will be canceled. Always pray for the welfare of all people. And in this way, your wish will also be fulfilled.”

In your worldly activities, you must be careful not to violate propriety and the rules of good conduct; you must not disregard the promptings of your inner voice; you must always be ready to respect the dictates of your conscience; you must watch your actions so that you can notice in time whether you are standing in someone’s way; you must always remain vigilant in order to discover the Truth behind all this glittering diversity. This is a person’s duty, your Dharma. The brilliant fire of Jnana, which tells you that all is Brahman (Sarvam khalvidam Brahmam), will reduce to ashes every trace of your egoism and worldly attachment. You must taste the nectar of Unity with Brahman; this is the ultimate goal of Dharma and of Karma inspired by Dharma.

Everything is transient. Only your You is imperishable, and I am that You.
By contrast, your I, on which you depend so heavily, has only one task: to lead you to this You.
If your I has become You, then sooner or later this You will become one with Me.
And what does this You mean? It is your changed outlook, which makes you renounce yourself and properly appreciate others.
And who is this other? Someone—or, in other words, something—that you truly love.
If you love someone, want to be truly close to them, and perceive their essence with your own essence, then you open yourself to your You. This is the moment when you come to know this very You. That is the whole secret. Therefore, I repeat again and again that you are God. God is your You within. God is the core around which you revolve. Thus you live so many lives, stuck in the world, held captive by its tentacles, in which your I becomes so easily entangled and no longer wishes to break free.
And suddenly you are sitting here, wanting to laugh out loud, because you understand how blind you were and how mistaken your ideas were. This is the moment when God awakens within you. Very carefully, so as not to frighten you. But His power grows greater and greater.
Until you reach the state in which you no longer see either the outer world or your I, but only your You—in other words, Me. Then you have reached the goal of your long journey and understood that I have always been beside you. In the form of this You that you are.

Death frightens you so much because you are unprepared for it.
If you have a tool that you greatly need, but it breaks, you are very upset.
By contrast, if you do not need a particular tool, if it lies unused and deteriorates, you do not notice it at all.
That is exactly how things stand with the body and death. With death, you bring to an end everything connected with the body. The body is your tool, which you needed very much for a certain time. But then it gradually lost its significance.
This is the deeper meaning of aging, which leads to the gradual withering of the body. This process should help you turn away from your body and turn toward God.
Starting today, begin by repeating the name of God (27.II), do good, and death will not extinguish the happy smile on your lips.

Do not make yourself small. Do not hold anyone but yourself responsible for your destiny.
I say again and again: you are God. Look at your life, at your destiny. You are the one who created it.
Do not suffer because of it, but change it. You have the power to do so.
No one outside you can change your destiny. This is the divinity in a human being: they themselves hold their destiny in their hands.
An animal lives out its destiny. It lives in a certain known way and cannot live otherwise.
Through consciousness and the power of intention, a person can fundamentally change their life, starting today.
Do not make yourself small. Open your eyes. Take your destiny into your own hands. Turn it in a positive direction.
See the divine in the world and find God within yourself.
This is how great you already are today.

"Recognize the Lord in everyone you meet; learn to see Him in every thing that has entered your life. His mystery eternally abides in everything material and immaterial. In fact, people have already realized that neither matter nor the world of external objects exists. All of this is God! Everything is a manifestation of His great mystery! Draw inspiration from that source of joy which is both within and outside you, move forward, do not stand still, and do not return to the past. Every minute, you are obliged to take a step forward"

WHAT IS OUR MIND
AND OUR THOUGHTS?
(Explanations
by Sathya Sai Baba)
1. "There is a saying that one can straighten a bent tree and shape a boulder, but it is impossible to correct a cunning mind...
The mind is the cause of every action. We must calm the mind, learn to control it, and strive to experience the knowledge of the Spirit..."

2. "It is very important to understand: as long as the mind is active, desires will not leave you. As long as you are under the power of the concepts of \"I\" and \"mine,\" the notions
of yourself as a physical body
will not leave you...
Truly, this means that bringing the active activity of the mind to zero is the only path to knowing the Higher Self, whatever you
may call it..."

3. "That serene and profound silence which comes after bringing the activity of the mind to zero is itself true knowledge.
True knowledge is our original nature, not something
newly acquired by us..."

4. "Sacred wisdom proclaims: the mind is the cause of bondage and liberation. When you control the mind, you transcend dualities..."

5. "The power of thought must not be underestimated. The fact that people on the other side of the ocean can pick up your thoughts speaks for itself...
In the same way, loving, healing thoughts can heal people in distant places..."

6. "We sow the seed of thought and reap the fruits of action. We sow the seed of action and reap the fruits of our character. We sow the fruit of character and reap the fruit of destiny.
There is only one cause of all human rises and falls—
thought."

7. "It is very important to always remember that good thoughts arise only through association with virtuous people. Strengthen and cultivate only sacred and good thoughts that inspire your life.
Remember, \"you reap what
you sow.\"

Listen!
Here is what you need to know to become enlightened: sit down, shut up, and ask yourself what truth is until you know.
That's it. This is the complete teaching on enlightenment, a complete practice. If you have questions or problems—no matter what questions or problems they are—the answer is always exactly the same: sit down, shut up, and ask yourself what truth is until you know.
In other words, go jump off a cliff.
Don't walk around near the cliff and contemplate jumping. Don't read a book about jumping off cliffs. Don't study the art and science of jumping. Don't join a support group for people who want to jump. Don't write poems about jumping. Don't pester someone who has jumped.
Just jump.

Swami said:

God is One. Whether it is Rama, Krishna, Allah, or Jesus, their teachings are intended to attain liberation. No religion preaches harming others. Some malicious people misinterpret sacred teachings and thus justify their participation in sinful acts. All noble souls preached sacred ideas. They said: “Love everyone.” They never preached hatred. God never commands anyone to kill others. No one has the right to take the lives of other beings, for the same Divinity (Atma) is present in everyone. However, people commit monstrous crimes in the name of God. This benefits no one. There is no God higher than Love. Love is God. God is Love. Live in Love. Rid yourselves of bad qualities. Ungodly people try to attribute their impurity to God. This is a sign of ignorance. Pay no attention to such people. Believe in your true higher Self—the Divinity inherent in you. Otherwise, you will not be able to develop love for God and love Him.

A person is weak because they do not observe, that is, do not maintain the unity of their thoughts, words, and deeds. Those who live in unity of these three are fortunate, because they allow their strength to increase greatly.
Then they live in sathya (truth), dharma (righteousness), prema (love), shanti (peace), and ahimsa (nonviolence). Through these cardinal virtues, they connect their strength to divine energy. Nothing can hold them back, and nothing can endanger them. Their victory is assured. People abandon the unity of thoughts, words, and deeds because they give in to illusions—in other words, they allow themselves to be tempted by their worldly desires.
A person likes to believe that satisfying worldly needs will bring the joy they seek. In the other world, they experienced divine bliss, and therefore seek it on Earth by every means and everywhere.
But the world is arranged in such a way that, on the one hand, they cannot find bliss here, while, on the other hand, they are compelled to continue seeking it.
Continuing the search is the road that leads to liberation. About everything you encounter, you need to ask: "Is this it? Or is it that?" Only when you receive an answer from your inner voice, from your Self, that this is what you are seeking, should you stop and accept it. Leave everything else behind, because it is merely one of the turns along your road. These turns reflect your ego. But the goal is your Self.
Sai Baba

You should think about a gift you can offer Swami on His Birthday.

The best gift for Me is your love for the people around you, so share their suffering and serve them.

That is the only gift I desire. There are many people serving the rich and powerful. But there is no one to serve those in need, the oppressed, and those who suffer.
Go to such people, be closest to them, and wish them well-being.

If you speak about spirituality to someone suffering from hunger, they will not hear you; it is useless.
First satisfy their hunger.
Give them God in the form of food; give them God in the form of clothing.
Give God in the form of peace to those who are troubled.
Give God in the form of treatment to those suffering from illness.
Give God in the form that will calm and ease their fear, pain, and suffering.

Only then will spirituality seep into their hearts.
Strive to become an embodiment of love.
However, you must clearly understand the nature of love.
Your love must be free from ego and attachment.

I act from morning until evening and from evening until morning. Do you know why? Because I am in a state of peace.
What does this mean? I will tell you.
The Greek philosopher Aristotle, referring to his teacher Plato, developed a theory known as the doctrine of the mean. It says that the opposite of something negative is also negative. The positive, as he taught, is instead the middle that unites and elevates both opposites.
He explains this using the example of reckless courage and a lack of courage. Neither one nor the other lies in the middle; rather, at the appropriate moment, each is characterized in a similar way by having too much in one case and too little in the other. For cowardice, there is too much fear; for reckless courage, too little. Courage, on the contrary, is the middle that unites both sides.
Most people are found between the negative poles of listlessness and feverishness. Both of these moods consume the soul’s energy.
The deep wisdom of life often manifests itself in paradoxes and contradictions, but the truth is found in the Self, where logic ends and contradictory assumptions exist at the same time.
The paradox, if taken seriously, sounds like this: Do you want to be lazy? Do you want to rest? Then do a lot! Do you know why this does not sound absurd? Because lazy people cannot remain lazy for a long time. Life does not allow it. Therefore, they often need to achieve a great deal in the shortest possible time—everything that was missed—and so they must make great and feverish efforts. Because then they need to do twice or three times as much.
Plan your time. Put nothing off. Choose. Act. Give the results to Me, and you will act while at the same time remaining in a state of peace.
Sai Baba

A PERSON IS CONSTANTLY SEEKING HAPPINESS.

In fact, his entire life is filled with happiness.
Happiness is everywhere.
Then why seek it?
A person seeks happiness in the external world because he has forgotten his true “Self.”
This is the essence of his complete ignorance.
The happiness you want to find is within you. You will experience happiness only when you sincerely love God. To love God sincerely and feel His divinity—that is devotion.
For love of God to grow, prayer is necessary. True prayer comes from the heart; it does not merely leave the lips.

Babies come straight from the heavenly realm. That is why they are full of love and confidence. They live only “here and now,” in the present; that is, they are completely grounded in their Self.
Babies sleep a lot because in this way they can still enjoy their closeness to God.
Their bodies have rounded, pleasing shapes and are gentle and supple. Their skin is stretched taut.
As more time passes, new structures increasingly form—structures that are important for life on Earth. Thinking develops, as does self-awareness and the distinction between “yours” and “mine.”
And the body becomes firmer.
This process continues until death. The older a person becomes, the firmer their body usually becomes.
In other words, suppleness signifies youth and life. Hardening is associated with age and death.
Preserve your elasticity. Avoid all kinds of rigidity. Find the child within yourself and find a game to play with them.
Play a little every day, and in this way reverse the process.
Instead of becoming increasingly rigid, become increasingly playful, supple, and light.
The outer is always a reflection of the inner. The more playful you become, and the better you establish contact with the child—with the tender, fragile, loving part of your being—the more supple your body will become.
Embrace with wit the profound paradoxes and seeming contradictions of life.
Know the great truths, because you can look at them with a baby’s broad, innocent eyes.
And so you will die young, because you, playing with the child within yourself, could have grown old, but you are supple; the rigidity of age could find no place within you.
In complete splendor and complete blessing.
Sai Baba

Fulfilling one’s duties is half of life—and almost all of happiness.
In your country, you have a problem with this because you are children who have been burned.
In this century, your people were deceived so thoroughly that you no longer trust anyone.
You only want to earn more money, be independent, and do what you like.
But anyone who has been deceived must ask themselves each time: how could this happen to me?
Hitler, for example, could achieve success only because he found support among you. What was your attitude toward the Jews? How are things today? And what about hostility toward foreigners? At that time, you chose a leader who corresponded to your negative feelings, your views, and the sense of duty beaten into you with whips.
That is not what I mean when I speak of fulfilling duties. I mean fulfilling those duties that arise from a feeling of love. Love helps you learn to carry out your task well and joyfully.
Love helps you learn to be open to all people. With love, you can experience the unity of all hearts.
This is what I mean when I speak of fulfilling one’s duty: being here out of love for others. Being grateful that you are able to give. I still cannot emphasize this clearly enough to you: if you have something to give, that is grace.

Already once this year (22.VI) I said: Part of My mission is that many people will establish contact with their inner voice.
To those who hear Me through their inner voice, I give instructions to guide them, to be with them in difficult situations, or so that they may feel My presence, although they cannot visit Me in India.
But at the same time, in the Ashram I issue a note stating that no one should claim to have received any message from Me.
Through this apparent contradiction, I want to prevent matters from turning into an “ego battle” in the form of “my Baba against your Baba.”
Because references to the inner voice can become a completely fabricated power game in which neither side takes responsibility for what they think, say, or do.
This is a game that I naturally do not want to support in any way.
If you have contact with your inner voice, consider it a great blessing, which you must therefore treat with great care.
Never use your inner voice to create any unfair or undeserved advantages for yourself.
Treat this voice as a secret that you do not need to impose on others, but that you should, as far as possible, keep to yourself.
In other words: the more carefully you treat your inner voice, the more likely it is that what you hear corresponds to what I want to tell you.
Namaskar (the Divine in me greets the Divine in you).
