Worship God, who has manifested Himself in human form! Every person is a child of God, regardless of skin color, social status, religion, or language. Develop and maintain this sense of unity. Serving others is true worship of God! You have both the talent and the desire to raise your fellow human beings to a higher level of consciousness. Today, the country urgently needs your service. In simple words, persuade your fellow human beings to give up habits that undermine health and disturb peace, and promote in them the qualities of mutual assistance, truthfulness, and nonviolence! God wished to create the Cosmos and said: “I am One, but I shall become many (Ekoham Bahusyam).” You, too, should feel the need to blossom and expand. Derive bliss from this. Remain in bliss and share this bliss with others so that bliss may increase more and more.

On the auspicious day of Kartika Purnima, which is also the birthday of Guru Nanak, Bhagavan lovingly reminds us of the sadhana popularized by Guru Nanak.

Embodiments of Divine Love! Samyak-kirtanam sankirtanam (The best form of devotional singing is collective singing). There is a great difference between kirtan and sankirtan. Kirtanam is an individual practice. It is the singing of one person at the conclusion of their prayers. Sankirtanam is intended for the welfare of the entire universe. It is also called samajika-bhajan (community singing). This method of singing bhajans was first introduced by Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. Sankirtan is intended to demonstrate unity in diversity. When all participants unite and sing in unison with one voice, it is called sankirtan. The main purpose of sankirtan is to earn the love of God. Combining their voice, melody, feelings, and rhythm with the appropriate rhythm of the song, the devotee should become fully immersed in singing. Harmonizing feelings with devotion and Love, the sacred words of the song should become an outpouring of love for God. Only such singing is religious singing. —Divine Discourse, March 3, 1992.

Remembrance of the Lord’s Name is a panacea for all troubles and suffering.

There are several stages in a person’s relationship with God. First, realize that you belong to God, just as a wave belongs to the Ocean. This first step is not easy at all, for it takes considerable time for a wave to realize that it exists only because of the Boundless Ocean. The wave’s ego prevents it from Humbly bowing before the Greatness of the Ocean, while the mental attitude “I am Yours” removes all traces of egoism and makes every activity Beneficial.

The next step is: “You are mine.” Here, the wave seeks support from the Ocean as its rightful due, and the Lord must assume responsibility for protecting and guiding the devotee. Surdas, addressing God, said: “You are mine. I will never leave You. I will clasp You in the embrace of my Heart, and You will not be able to hide from me.”

And the final step is: “You are me.” Here, “I” is merely a reflection, while “You” are the True Reality. This “I” has no separate individuality, because duality does not exist and everything is One.

What does Bhagavan draw to the attention of spiritual seekers studying the stories of the great heroes of the Upanishads? Let us listen to Him and move forward, spiritually uplifted and inspired.

Practice brings you a rich harvest of experiential knowledge of bliss. If you spend all your time building a fence, when will you grow the crop? If you spend all your time reading about agriculture and the wonderful harvests that can be obtained by using high-yielding varieties of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and so on, but do not plow, sow, spray, dig, or pull out the weeds, how can the granary become full? It is not enough to read, recite, or listen; practice is necessary. If you are told that Nachiketa did this or that, or that Svetaketu said this or that, what is the use? If you do not accept them as examples for yourselves, as your ideals and guides, these sacred texts will remain fairy tales! Recognize their steadfastness and faith, their system of values and their righteousness. And strive to acquire all these qualities. Only then can we know another Nachiketa and another Svetaketu. Otherwise, throughout the entire history of humanity there will be only one Nachiketa and one Svetaketu!
Divine Discourse, April 22, 1967.

You must draw closer to God and become dear to Him through your love. When this happens, desires will disappear.

Life is like a newspaper. Read it carelessly, running your eyes over the headlines, glance through a couple of columns out of curiosity, and throw it away. Do not attach too much importance to it. Remember, today’s newspaper is tomorrow’s wastepaper! Life is the same: it is quite enough to “read” it once! One birth is enough. May the death awaiting you be the last!

You are all treasure houses filled with Divine Love! Share It, give It, spread It! Manifest your Love through your actions in the form of Service and Help to others. Express your Love in words of Sympathy and thoughts of Compassion.

When you awaken from sleep, you understand that the dream encompassing events spanning many years lasted only a few minutes. In the same way, your life will seem to you like a fleeting adventure when you awaken to the Higher Wisdom (Jnana) after the short “dream of life.”

Always be filled with Joy, so that when death calls you, you may greet it with a gentle smile rather than with heavy groans and tears of grief. I Bless you to shape your lives so that you may attain this Highest Eternal Bliss!

Why is it important to lead a conscious life? Bhagawan lovingly reminds us of this today.

Those who are pure in heart always succeed. Whatever work you undertake, do it honestly and conscientiously (mindfully). Develop purity of mind. If you take up work with a pure mind and then pray to God, you will undoubtedly achieve results. The Gita says: "Mamaivamso jiva-loke jiva-bhutah sanatanah" (All individual beings in this material world are parts of My eternal Self). You are all part of My Divinity. Therefore, you must all follow Me. My Love is divine and sacred. Your love should be the same. If you follow this principle, you will automatically attain purity. Where there is purity, there is Divinity. Everything is a reflection, reaction, and resound. Since ancient times, you have all been My own amshas (parts). Never forget this truth! If you develop faith in this Truth even once, it is equivalent to reading the entire Bhagavad Gita.

Divine Discourse, November 13, 2007

God is the embodiment of Dharma; His grace is won through Dharma. He always encourages, approves, and nurtures Dharma. He always establishes Dharma. He is Dharma itself.

What is the best protection (from karma) that we can practice daily to destroy the consequences of our past actions? Bhagawan lovingly guides us today.

The consequences of karma (actions) can be destroyed only by karma, just as a thorn can be removed only with another thorn! Perform good karma to alleviate the pain of the bad karma you have performed and from which you are suffering now. The best and simplest karma is repetition of the Lord’s name; engage in it constantly. This will restrain you from evil tendencies and impious thoughts. It will help you radiate love around you. The ancient sages divided karma into vikarma (that which is performed intentionally) and akarma (that which is performed without the intention of obtaining consequences). Follow akarma and free yourself from suffering. All other actions, such as earning wealth, reputation, and fame, will lead to suffering. Attain inner peace and joy; this is possible only when you act without thinking of gain. The action itself should be the reward, or rather, action should be an aspiration toward God within, whereby the consequences of such action can be offered to Him. Consistently practice this approach, and you will discover great peace reigning within and around you.
Divine Discourse, March 26, 1965.

Do all work as God’s work. Practice the attitude of offering the fruits of all your work to God.

What is the deeper significance of the Lord’s name “Nama”? On the eve of the Global Akhanda Bhajan, Bhagawan lovingly reminds us of this in crystal-clear terms.

Nama consists of three letters: “na,” “aa,” and “ma.” All music is based on the seven svaras, the seven notes. According to the science of numerology, the letters “na,” “aa,” and “ma” have the numerical values 0, 2, and 5, making seven in total. The seven notes are “sa, ri, ga, ma, pa, da, ni.” The gopis used these seven notes to unite music, rhythm, and devotion in the dance of “Rasa-krida” with Krishna. In this group dance, the gopis became so immersed in devotion and singing that they experienced unity with the Divine. Thus, sankirtan (group singing) in praise of Krishna became popular, helping to develop devotion and encouraging group prayers for the welfare of the entire world. Similarly, group singing in the name of Rama also became popular. Numerologically, the letters in the name Rama add up to seven. In addition to the seven notes, the mystical number seven is associated with many sacred things, such as the seven islands, the seven oceans, the seven sages, and so on. In accordance with this concept, seven-day festivals and yajnas are held. — Divine Discourse, November 8, 1986.

When one person sings, the heart melts into the song. But when many sing together, the song gains Divine power.

What is the best protection in this turbulent, impermanent world? Bhagavan lovingly guides us today!

The power of the Divine Name is unparalleled. People often underestimate it. This is a mistake. One should not mistake a piece of shining glass for a diamond. A real diamond is something entirely different. What is this diamond? What is this “Die mind”? The Name of God is the real diamond. Keep it safe. Never worry about pain and suffering, losses and difficulties. They come and go without affecting your true nature. Your true Self is strong, eternal, and real. You must not be carried away by fleeting and unreal waves, forgetting your own true and eternal nature. Unfortunately, people today follow only unreal and fleeting waves. If you cling to such fleeting and unreal things, you will always be deceived! Seek refuge at the lotus feet of God and never give up! Wherever you go, the Divine Feet will protect you. If you establish God's Name in your heart, your life will become sacred. This is bhakti (devotion). This is your shakti (power). This is mukti (liberation).—Divine discourse, November 13, 2007

You may give up everything, but never give up God! Never forget God! Write this lesson directly into your hearts.

Visitor: Swami, I have a question. What kind of sadhana is best suited to a young man who has a job, family ties, and attachments (after Swami jokingly called his 8-month-old daughter an “attachment-samsara”) ?

Sathya Sai Baba: It is wrong to view these things as an “attachment” or bonds. They should be viewed as “corrective sadhana.” These things are good for balancing your life and giving it direction. The changes you will need to introduce into your life and daily routine, everything you must adapt to, are your sadhana, not binding bonds.

The goal of any sadhana is to see the good and the Divine in everything and to be able not to see what is bad and evil. From the Divine point of view, there is neither good nor bad. Everything is Divine. But the mind sees good in one thing and bad in another; it sees one thing as right and another as wrong. It is the mind that must be trained to see the Divine in everyone and in every difficulty.

A small example: a dead dog lies on the road, and crows are pecking at it. People pass by and say, “Oh! What a horrible sight and disgusting smell!” But Jesus happened to be passing by and said, “What beautiful teeth this dog has, so white and gleaming. No one brushed them or looked after them, and yet the dog managed to preserve them in such magnificent condition.” Jesus showed that even in the most horrible situations, one can find a good side. People who are sinless always see the good and never allow their minds to become involved in what is bad.

Another example is a knife used by a surgeon and a villain. The surgeon makes an incision for the patient’s benefit, while the villain uses it for a vile purpose. A butcher uses a knife to cut meat, and a woman uses one to cut fruit for a salad. If all the knives are placed around a magnet, they will all be attracted to it equally.

Good or evil is not in the knife. God is the magnet, and all people are attracted to God. What is bad and good is not in the human being, but in how they use their mind. Do not fill your mind with thoughts of evil deeds that can be seen in the world. The purpose of all types of sadhana is to teach the mind to see the Divine in everything. This is true “corrective sadhana,” and it can be practiced while engaging in any activity.

What is worry? It is merely fear born in the mind. By its very nature, the mind is changeable. Therefore, all the worries it creates are also impermanent. Every worry is like a one-kopeck coin.

There are 100 kopecks in one ruble, and 10,000 kopecks in 100 rubles. When you gather a pile of 10,000 kopecks, it will be quite heavy and difficult to carry around. Therefore, the Lord says: “Give me these 10,000 kopecks, and I will give you a 100-ruble banknote. It is much lighter and more convenient to handle, carry, and store.”

Storing a large bag containing 10,000 kopecks is quite difficult. Carrying it around with you is even harder! Therefore, the Lord repeatedly urges us: “My dear one, give me all your worries.” Thus, surrender all your burdens to the Lord and be Happy!

How can we make the most effective use of our human life? Today, Bhagawan lovingly reminds us of this by giving us valuable guidance.

Human life is not granted merely to eat and digest food, wander about, and rest, but for a much higher purpose—God-realization, so that we may recognize Divinity in everything that exists around us and even beyond the reach of our senses! Wasting life on futile pursuits and mere pleasures is not at all a sign of an intelligent person. Instead, earn God's grace by helping the weak and poor, the sick and disabled, the suffering and needy. Do not laugh at others, rejoice in their humiliation, or spread degrading gossip about them. There is no greater sin than hurting the feelings of others. A person should develop two qualities: fear of sin and devotion to God. To cultivate devotion to God, associate with good people, practice namasmarana (chanting the Divine Name) in the mornings, join groups of people chanting God's Name, and move about filled with joy as you do so. — Divine Discourse, January 28, 1975.

Having received the sacred human embodiment, do not spend your entire life merely filling your belly.

— BABA

Avoid listening to bad or indecent conversations. You should not pay attention to them. If you listen to, watch, and talk about indecent things, your hearts become polluted. Take a camera, for example. A camera captures any image at which its lens is pointed. The mind is like a camera lens. If you direct your mind toward indecent words, indecent conversations, and indecent sights, these images become imprinted in your heart. Keep your heart pure by turning your thoughts toward God.
Take care of the Divinity within you. Life is a dress rehearsal for death. Birth and death exist only because of the body. For the soul, there is neither birth nor death. You are the embodiment of the divine spirit. Do not think about the body. Do not think about the mind. Think about the soul: make it pure and keep it pure. It is impure because of your desires.
Here is a piece of cloth. By nature, it is white. When it is used, it becomes dirty. You give it to a washerman to wash. When the washerman brings it back, it is white again. The washerman did not change its color. By nature, it is white. He merely removed the dust and dirt from the cloth. In the same way, the soul is naturally pure. But the soul becomes dirty and dusty because of desires. Sadhana (spiritual practice) is the washerman who cleanses the heart. The washerman—sadhana—removes the dust and dirt from the soul. When the dust covering the soul is removed, the soul regains its purity. Therefore, you must ensure that there is no dirt or lust in your heart (translator’s note: dust). Lust is the worst quality. It is the first enemy of those who follow the spiritual path. If you want to reach heaven, you must develop purity of heart. All your thoughts should be directed toward God.

The same Atma-tattva is present not only in human beings, but in every living being in the Universe. In order to realize this truth, a person must have a pure and selfless heart.

There is no one in this world in whose heart God does not dwell. Therefore, is meditation needed in order to see such an all-pervading and omnipresent God? Today, there are many people who teach various meditation techniques. Nevertheless, meditation is intended to help one attain purity of the spiritual heart, because without attaining purity of the heart in which consciousness dwells, it is impossible to realize God. Therefore, one should strive to attain purity of the spiritual heart.

No type of sadhana will help one realize God if the heart lacks purity. Various types of sadhana, such as fasting, meditation, and so on, help a person develop faith in the omnipresent God who, in fact, dwells within you. Usually, people think that God gave darshan to this or that person. But the truth is that God never gives darshan to a person with an impure heart. Therefore, if you want to receive darshan of God, you must develop purity of heart. All types of sadhana are intended only to attain purity. As soon as you attain purity of heart, the omnipresent Lord will appear directly before you. Unfortunately, today there is a lack of such gurus in the world who can steadily guide a spiritual seeker along the path of purity. They limit themselves to teaching certain mechanical meditation techniques in exchange for money.

Embodiments of Love! If you want to see God, you must attain purity of heart.

Divine Discourse, October 9, 2005, "Purity of Heart Is True Sadhana"

In order to enter the Kingdom of God, it is said that we must become like children. What does it mean to be like a child? Bhagavan lovingly explains this to us today through simple examples.

The units of the Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organization should demonstrate through their personal example and actions that there is no greater joy in the world than the joy of renunciation—the joy of being able to share and give. This will become clearer to you if you observe the behavior of children. Like realized souls, they are free from attachments. Look carefully at the contents of a child’s pocket. You may find pebbles, a piece of glass, a twig, or a flower there. A child derives more joy from all these things than adults derive from bundles of money. Children do not crave to possess anything, nor are they quick to refuse others. A child will not accumulate money for the future or merely for the pleasure of being known as a miser! A child may be covered in dirt, but their mind is free from dirt. Adults, on the other hand, carefully maintain the cleanliness of the physical body, but their minds are cesspools filled with desires, hatred, envy, and the filth that pollutes them. — Divine Discourse, November 24, 1972.

The purity of childhood contains freedom from all the lies and deceptions of the world. This is purity of mind. Truth dwells in this purity.

The principle of life (Jivasatva) is like a seed covered by a shell of delusion (Maya), just as a grain of rice is covered by husk. Maya must be removed, and the seed (Jivasatva) must be cooked so that it becomes soft and can be assimilated, adding health and strength. Softened rice can be likened to the Supreme Spirit (Paramatma). The mind is used in this process. It must be directed toward Truth (Satyam) and Eternity (Nityam). The instrument for removing the shell of delusion is the wisdom of Discrimination (Viveka).

Develop the ability to discern and understand what is eternal and what is not, what is beneficial and what is not. You must use Viveka even when choosing a Guru. Not every cloud brings rain. A true teacher will be able to attract seekers from far away simply through his personality. He does not need to utter lofty words; his mere presence is enough for seekers to rush toward him like bees flocking to a blossoming lotus.

Constantly strive toward the Light; be confident and active. Do not give in to despair, as it never brings good results. It only aggravates the problem, clouding the mind and plunging you into doubt. You must embark on the path of spiritual practice (sadhana) with genuine enthusiasm. Hesitant steps and stops will bear no fruit. It is like washing a dirty floor with a stream of water. If the water pressure is weak, the dirt will not go anywhere. The stream must be strong and swift, washing away everything in its path so that the dirt is removed.

LIBERATION IS ATTAINED THROUGH SUBTLE MEANS

I am telling you about these very first steps only because they are the most important for a spiritual seeker (sadhaka), and all of you are sadhakas or are ready to become them. It is said: “Moksha lies in sukshma,” that is, “Liberation is attained through subtle means.” Treat others as you would like them to treat you. When grief descends upon you, never immerse yourself in memories of similar cases in the past, adding them to your present sorrow. Instead, remember the times when grief passed your door by and you were happy. Seek comfort and strength in such memories, and rise above the current of sorrow. Women are considered “weak” because they succumb to anger and sadness much more easily than men; therefore, to overcome this, I ask them to take on additional trials. Repetition of the Lord’s name (Namasmarana) is the best antidote to all this; and if men and women choose it for themselves, the Lord will come to their aid. In this way, faith will gradually arise within them that everything is a manifestation of God’s Will. This will teach you that you have no right to give yourself over to jubilation or fall into despair.

When you consult a doctor, you must take the medicines prescribed by him and follow his advice and instructions. It is useless to condemn the doctor if you do not follow his prescriptions. How can he cure you if you do not take the medicine, or do not follow the restrictions he recommended, or fail to adhere to the diet? Do what I say, follow My advice, and then let us see the result!

And it is utterly foolish to endlessly dwell on failures and mistakes made in the past, and even punish yourself for them by refusing to eat. What a childish way of correcting things. What good is it to harm your body while trying to correct your mind?

If you cannot love others, then at least do not hate or envy them. Do not try to distort their motives or speak ill of them. Their motives may be no less noble than yours. Their actions may have resulted more from ignorance than from immorality or malice. Forgive the mistakes of others, but be stricter with your own.

The sacred culture of our ancient country was poisoned by a single vice—intolerance, intolerance of the successes, prosperity, and growth of others. If you cannot help another person, then at least avoid causing them harm or pain. That in itself is a great service. What right do you have to look for faults in another person or treat them badly? If you claim that nothing on earth can happen without His Will, then where do irritation and anger come from? Your duty is to purify yourself, so attend to your own inner purification. Such an orientation will give you the cooperation of all good people, and you will discover within yourself a source of strength and joy.

How can sincere and devoted spiritual seekers please the Lord? Bhagawan lovingly and with utmost clarity reminds us of this today!

Finding fault with others and concealing one’s own faults are not traits of a spiritual seeker. If someone points out your faults, do not argue or try to prove that you are right, and especially do not hold a grudge against them for it. Examine what your fault might be and correct your behavior. Self-justification for one’s own satisfaction or revenge against the person who pointed it out are certainly not the qualities of a spiritual seeker or devotee. A spiritual person should always strive for truth and joy and avoid all untruthful, sad, and depressing thoughts. Depression, doubts, and vanity are like Rahu and Ketu for a spiritual seeker. They will hinder spiritual practice. They can easily be cast aside once devotion has taken deep root. It is best for a spiritual seeker, under all circumstances, to experience joy, smile, and be full of enthusiasm. — Prema Vahini, Chapter 63.

When we are able to see the faults within us, we will experience true bliss.

What role can women play in our time? Bhagawan lovingly reminds us of this during the celebration of Women’s Day.

Every woman should receive a good education in a carefully planned manner. She should understand the problems facing the country. Within her capabilities, she should render whatever service she can and offer assistance to the country, society, and family. No nation can be built otherwise than on the culture of its women. The future generation is shaped by today’s mothers. The present generation is filled with adharma (unrighteousness) and injustice because their mothers were not sufficiently vigilant and wise. But the past is past. Therefore, to save the future generation, women must be guided to take the ideals of the ancients as their example. In the past, present, and future—in all ages—women have been the foundation of progress, the heart of the nation, its very breath. They play the principal role in the dharma of life, a key role imbued with sanctity. — Dharma Vahini, Chapter 5.

If a man follows a woman’s example and imbibes sacred and self-sacrificing qualities, the world will certainly become a better place.

The best gift for Me is your love for the people around you, so share their suffering and serve them.
That is the only gift I desire.
There are many who serve the rich and powerful.
But the needy, oppressed, and suffering have no one to serve them.
Go to such people, be their friends, their relatives, be the closest people to them, wishing them well-being.
If you speak to someone who is suffering from hunger about spirituality, it is useless; they will not hear you. First satisfy their hunger.
Give them God in the form of food; give them God in the form of clothing.
Give God in the form of peace and tranquility to those who are distressed.
Give God in the form of treatment to those who suffer from illness.
Give God in whatever form will soothe and ease their fear, pain, and suffering.
Only then will spirituality seep into their hearts.
Strive to become the Embodiment of Love!
Baba
