What important quality should we develop and strengthen within ourselves if we want to dispel anxiety in the world? Bhagavan explains with love today.

One may be a simpleton, endowed with neither intelligence nor intellectual abilities, but if a person has fear of sin, that is already enough. You may possess as much wealth, gold, and worldly things as you like, but if you have no fear of committing sin, you can only be considered ignorant. Once Prahlada said to his father: "Why are you killing innocent people just as you hunt wild animals in the forest? You commit violence to expand your kingdom. What are you trying to achieve by killing so many people? This is not what you should do. How can one who has become a slave to his inner enemies defeat his external enemies? There are many great enemies within you. Who are they? They are desire, anger, greed, delusion, pride, and jealousy. Having surrendered to these six inner enemies, you kill innocent people. This is a great sin." First of all, kill your inner enemies, such as desire, anger, greed, and so on. Only then will you be able to develop within yourself a sense of fear of sin. What is the reason for the unrest prevailing in the country today? The reason lies in the absence of fear of sin and insufficient love for God.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Sri, the bride of Vishnu and mother of the world, is eternal and indestructible; she is present everywhere to the same extent that she pervades all existence. Vishnu is meaning, and she is speech. Hari is power, and she is prudence. Vishnu is understanding, and she is intellect. He is righteousness, and she is devotion. He is the creator, and she is creation. Sri is the earth, and Hari is her support. He is essence, and eternal Lakshmi is submission. He is desire, and she is wish. Sri is heaven, and Vishnu, who is one with all things, is boundless space. The lord of Sri is the moon, and she is his unfading light. She is called the moving principle of the world, and he is the wind that blows everywhere. The wielder of the mace is resistance, and the power that enables resistance is Sri. Lakshmi is light, and Hari, the Lord of all, is the lamp. She, the mother of the world, is a winding vine, and Vishnu is the tree around which she twines. She is night, and the god armed with a mace and discus is day. He, the bestower of blessings, is the bridegroom, and the goddess seated on the lotus is his bride. The god possesses all masculine qualities, and she all feminine qualities. The lotus-eyed god is the standard, and the goddess seated on the lotus is the flag. Lakshmi is avarice, and Narayana, the lord of the world, is miserliness; he, Govinda, who knows what righteousness is, is love, and Lakshmi, his tender companion, is delight. But why enumerate their manifestations at such length? It is enough to say in one word, comprehensible to gods, animals, and humans, that Hari is everything called masculine, and Lakshmi is everything designated by the word feminine. There is nothing besides them.

How should we practice the supreme virtue of forgiveness? Bhagavan lovingly reminds us of this today so that we may learn the subtlety of harmony.

Today, the situation in society is such that people try to abuse even the good deeds of others. Even if you help them, they try to harm you. There is no doubt that we should help even those who harm us. But when helping others, you should be selective. Consider to what extent you can help such people. I have already told this story before. When Muhammad Ghori attacked Prithviraj, he was completely defeated by him. But Prithviraj, being a generous ruler, forgave him and set him free. Later, Muhammad Ghori attacked Prithviraj again and defeated him. Muhammad Ghori took Prithviraj captive and blinded him. He felt no gratitude toward Prithviraj, who had previously allowed him to return unharmed. Therefore, one should be careful in practicing forgiveness when dealing with a cruel person. There is no doubt that forgiveness is a great virtue, but it will do more harm than good if practiced toward a malicious person. Such a person should be forgiven once or at most twice. Do not forgive him every time he harms you, otherwise you will put yourself in danger.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba
- Divine Discourse, July 12, 1996.

To purify the mind, prayer is water and repentance is soap. Repentance should be followed by a resolve not to repeat the offense.

Why is silence said to be the language of the wise? Bhagavan lovingly explains this through a beautiful legend.

People who have not even set foot on the outskirts of the capital dare to argue about the appearance and glory of the emperor who lives in a palace at the very center of the city! Such is the deplorable state of scholarship today. The Maharaja of Burdwan once convened an assembly to discuss the merits of Shiva and Vishnu. The Panchakshari (five-syllabled) mantra of Shiva and the Ashtakshari (eight-syllabled) mantra of Vishnu were expounded and praised by rival pandits. The Maharaja asked the chief priest of his palace, who was a great scholar and sadhaka, to deliver his judgment. He said that none of the pandits had seen either Shiva or Vishnu, although they were all ready to defend their interests. He declared that anyone who had seen either of them would remain silent not only about what he had seen, but even about what he had not seen. This statement put an end to the quarrels, and everyone returned home, deeply ashamed of their inexperience!
Sri Sathya Sai Baba
- Divine Discourse, January 30, 1965.

To understand the nature of God, a person must develop a comprehensive worldview and nurture a universal conception of all-encompassing love.

If a person meditates with their eyes open, everything happening before them will cause unrest in the mind. If the eyes are completely closed, however, the goddess of sleep will envelop us. Therefore, we should sit with our eyes half-closed. Some believe that the tip of the nose is located between the eyebrows. No! The end of the nose is the forehead. Thus, it is necessary to concentrate on the tip of the nose. Lord Krishna spoke of the same thing.

"Kasturi Tilakam Lalaata (1) P'alake Vaksha (2) Sth'ale Kaust'ubham Naasagre (3) Navamouktikam..."

1) Turn to the eye of wisdom. 2) Lord Krishna adorned His chest with the sign of happiness. 3) He kept His vision fixed on the tip of His nose.

Krishna wore two bracelets on His arm. One bracelet symbolizes: "The protection of the righteous and the punishment of the wicked." The second bracelet symbolizes: "I will take upon Myself all the concerns of the one who constantly relies on Me."

God wears bracelets to fulfill His vows. Thus, Lord Krishna’s vision was focused on the tip of His nose, meaning that it was always meditative. We may be engaged in a particular physical activity. The mind is highly prone to fluctuations. Even while fully aware of the harmful nature of certain things, it nevertheless tends to do them. We are well aware that listening to bad things is not good, yet we do it. We must teach it a lesson.

"O ears! Why do you listen to everything and anything? Why do you not listen when the name of the Lord is sung?"

You should teach the ears to listen to stories that make everyone happy and to tales that glorify the Lord.

"You watch films again and again that do not make you good. But you do not wish to contemplate the Lord even for a moment. O eyes! Take note of this."

In the same way, you must teach the senses lessons and control them. When the mind begins to wander here and there, it needs to be given something to do. If the mind has nothing to occupy it, it will wander throughout the entire world. "While truth is putting on its sandals, falsehood will have time to go around the whole world." Likewise, if the mind is not occupied with work, it will go around the whole world. Therefore, before sitting down to meditate, one should give the mind a specific task. What task? It is well known that the mind is a mad monkey. To keep a monkey occupied while a street performer performs his tricks, he drives a stick into the ground and asks the monkey to climb up and down it without stopping. Similarly, we should appoint the mind as a watcher of the area of the forehead near the point where the eyebrows meet.

Anger is very dangerous in many ways, and is also a serious cause of ill health. A long train of its accomplices follows in its wake, each contributing to the process of ultimate destruction. Therefore, you must suppress this passion as soon as it arises in the mind, reminding yourself that God is omnipresent, that God is the inner driving force behind everything, that He is the director of the performance called life; try to think about something else, excluding the circumstances that caused your anger; devote yourself to namasmarana (remembrance of the Name), or lie down in bed, go for a long walk, drink cold water—struggle with yourself until you win.

Do not fight with others—fight with your own emotions. When the country was invaded by Chinese hordes, you fought them in the Himalayas, not in Puttaparthi, did you? It is certainly easier to reach Puttaparthi, but the invasion took place at the border, so the battle also had to take place at the border! Stop the enemy at the threshold; block the path of anger at the threshold of the mind. Then your body will be safe.

What place does selfless activity occupy in our lives? Bhagavan gives a wonderful example today and inspires us to improve ourselves.

A person attains purity of consciousness through their actions. In fact, one should view one’s actions precisely from this perspective. Why should we strive for purity of consciousness? Imagine a well with dirty, muddy water whose bottom cannot even be seen. In every person’s heart, deep within their consciousness, there is the Atman (the Divine Spirit). But it can be known only when consciousness has been purified. Your fantasies, conclusions, judgments and prejudices, passions, emotions and selfish desires pollute and cloud consciousness. How, then, can you realize the Atman, which is the foundation of everything? Through seva (service) performed without any desire to gratify the ego, and only with concern for the well-being of others, one can purify consciousness and manifest the Atman.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Service should flow from Love and spread love abundantly.

The Teacher always emphasized that one must be absolutely sincere with God, and once said:

“God cannot be bribed by the number of worshippers in a church, by its wealth, or by well-planned ceremonies.

God visits only the altar of a heart washed by tears of devotion and illuminated by love that stirs the soul.

Does liberation consist in finding a place in heaven or attaining some higher realm? Bhagavan graciously explains this to us and guides us along the most effective path.

The principle of love inherent in human beings is equally present in all creatures, including birds and animals. Therefore, we should value the lives of all beings equally. Share the love hidden within you not only with other people, but also with all the creations of nature. This is the true universal principle of love. Only this principle should be the foundation of human life. People have strange ideas about liberation, imagining that it means reaching heaven and existing there eternally. That is not the meaning of liberation. It means attaining selfless love that is constant, unwavering, and all-encompassing. This is the state one should strive to attain; only when this state is achieved is a person truly liberated. In the name of liberation, seekers try all kinds of spiritual paths. At best, all these practices can bring temporary satisfaction. Only the path of Pure Love can truly lead you to the goal and bestow eternal bliss.

Divine Discourse, May 21, 2000

Only through the path of love can one attain the embodiment of love that is God.

The belief that only yogis, jnanis, and rishis can attain moksha is mistaken and unfounded.
This goal is available to everyone; whether one is a brahmacharya, a vanaprastha, or a
sannyasi, the goal is the same for all. We usually consider the four main stages of human life—
brahmacharya, grihastha, vanaprastha, and sannyasi
(student, householder, one who has withdrawn into solitude, and renunciant)—to be fundamentally different from one another, but in Brahman they are all one. The paths corresponding to them—artha, artharthi, jijñasu, and jnani
(spiritual aspiration, the desire for prosperity, realization, and wisdom)—appear different outwardly,
but those who follow them arrive at the same goal.
If a person longs to attain the true
goal, God shows equal concern for every seeker.
He is even ready to lead people to this
goal. God does not favor anyone.
He has neither different judgments nor
special opinions regarding different people.
All differences are created by our own contradictory ideas.
We should not attribute these differences to God.

What is the true purpose of scientific study and research? Bhagawan lovingly reminds us today.

When I was in Bombay for the “Science and Spirituality” symposium, a distinguished scientist stated that the nuclear arsenals of the great powers contained enough atomic bombs to destroy the world ten times over. What is the point of building up such arsenals? If you have destroyed the world once, what would remain for the other bombs to destroy? In the process, you would destroy yourselves as well. Those engaged in research seem to be more concerned with advancing their names and fame through their research than with improving the welfare of society through its results. They do not seem concerned about the harmful consequences of their discoveries. There is nothing great about harming others. Destroying a million people with one bomb is no difficult task. Doing good to one person in the world is more praiseworthy. The scientific knowledge we acquire should be used for the benefit of our fellow human beings. Only that education is proper which prepares a student for enlightened action. The pursuit of the Science of the Higher Spirit (Parartha Vijnana Shastra) is more important than engaging in the physical sciences (Padartha Vijnanamu).

— Divine Discourse, 16 June 1983

If we want to ensure peace, science must progress in the right direction.

What is the best way to use the abilities with which God has endowed us? Bhagawan lovingly explains and inspires us to unfold our divine potential.

Everything that is visible and appears real will inevitably disappear in the flow of time. Everything manifested in the phenomenal world will sooner or later disappear. We must make every effort to know that which is invisible yet eternal. It is wrong for a human being endowed with immense abilities to be content with what physical sight can see. Animals and birds, as well as insects and microorganisms, possess the same kind of sight. What, then, is unique about the vision granted to human beings? We must realise that human birth is attained only with great difficulty. Having received this privilege, a person should not be limited to what the eyes can see. One must acquire the eyes of wisdom. One may object that the eyes also help us gain knowledge. The eyes see everything, but they cannot see themselves. If the eyes cannot see themselves, can they see the mind or Madhava (the Lord)? Physical sight is not enough to attain the vision of the Lord. For this, one must acquire the eyes of wisdom.
-Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Only when you realise the unchanging Divine Principle that sustains the changing Universe will you be able to easily understand the entire mystery of creation.

What fashionable habit harms the person most? Bhagavan lovingly reminds us today to be careful.

Just because delicious food is available and offered, there is a temptation to overeat. Air is all around us, but we do not breathe in more than we need. A lake is full, but we drink only as much as thirst requires. Yet overeating has become a social evil, a fashionable habit. The stomach cries, “Enough,” but the tongue insists on more, and the person becomes a helpless target of disease. They suffer from obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Moderate eating is the best medicine for diseases. Do not run to the hospital over every minor ailment. Too much medicine is also harmful. Give nature full scope to fight the disease and heal itself. Adopt more and more principles of natural healing. The type of food you consume determines the degree of concentration you can maintain; the quality and quantity of food determine how much your self-control will decrease or increase. Polluted air and water are full of harmful viruses and microbes, and they should be avoided at all costs. There are four types of pollution that a person must guard against: of the body (removed by water); of the mind (removed by truthfulness); of the intellect (eliminated by right knowledge); and of the individual “I” (eliminated by striving toward God).
Sri Sathya Sai Baba

We are all lifelong learners, like schoolchildren and students. What do we need to do to regain our original purity? Bhagavan lovingly offers the quickest solution through a memorable example.

Time is infinitely precious. You must not waste even a single moment. In a person’s life, the student years are the most valuable and sacred. You must make the best use of them. Milk mixed with water cannot regain its original purity, no matter how hard you try to separate it. But when you turn the milk into butter, it will no longer be affected by the water. Butter floats on water and retains its distinctive qualities. In the same way, samsara (worldly attachments) is like water. The human mind is like milk. When a pure, sacred, uncontaminated mind mixes with the water of worldly desires, it is difficult to restore its original purity. However, if during this sacred period of learning you extract from your untouched mind the butter of knowledge, wisdom, and right conduct, you can remain untainted by the attractive aspects of the world, even while living in it. - Divine Discourse, June 16, 1983.

Elders should sow the seeds of human values in the tender hearts of children. They will grow into giant trees and provide shelter to others in the future!

How should we maintain balance in nature? Bhagawan lovingly reminds us of this today, drawing an analogy with the human body.

The body’s temperature must be maintained at a certain level. If the temperature becomes higher or lower than normal, it is a sign of illness. In the same way, if the five elements that make up the natural environment are kept in balance, the world is in a healthy state. But if this balance is disturbed or the elements become polluted, countries suffer in various ways. If the products of science and technology disrupt the balance of nature and pollute the atmosphere, rivers, and seas, this leads to many harmful consequences. Pollution gives rise to numerous new diseases. Today, even clean air has become a rare phenomenon. Three-quarters of the Earth is covered by water. The ocean floor contains many useful minerals. But certain restrictions must be observed when extracting them. Otherwise, even the ocean, which respects its boundaries, will overflow them. Even earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur because of the disruption of ecological balance in nature.

Swami said:

Live, but only once. Live as though you were born only once. Do not fall so deeply in love with the world that its false charm plunges you again and again into its illusory reflection of joy and sorrow. Until you distance yourself, even slightly, from the sticky web of this world, until you realize that everything taking place is merely a play directed by God Himself, you remain in danger of becoming too closely involved with the world. Use the world as a training ground for sacrifice, service, purification of the senses, and expansion of the heart. This alone is the value of the world.

Whatever path we choose, what qualities are necessary to achieve our goal? Bhagawan lovingly explains this to us today, so that every aspirant may be inspired.

Sai devotees should understand the essence of our culture. Sacrifice and service—these are the two essential qualities. There are two paths to God-realization. One is the path of devotion, in which the devotee considers himself a servant of God. Constantly repeating, “Dasoham” (I am Your servant), he continues to diminish his ego until worldly attachments disappear. The other means is jnana-marga (the path of knowledge). By constantly developing the feeling of oneness with the Divine—Shivoham (I am the Divine)—his consciousness expands to such an extent that it becomes one with universal consciousness, and all worldly bonds are severed. If anyone analyzes their position in this vast cosmos, they will realize their infinitesimal size. Egoism arises from ignorance. Cast out the ego and develop love. Along with love, cultivate the spirit of sacrifice. “Only sacrifice can grant immortality,” say the Upanishads. Sacrifice can grant bliss and good health. Experience the joy of self-surrender. Renunciation is the key to sound health. — Divine Discourse, April 11, 1997.

Service becomes meaningful when it expresses love that flows from sacrifice.

What two qualities are necessary for a fulfilling life? Bhagawan lovingly guides us today in crystal-clear terms!

Be diligent not only in consuming food, but also in Daiva Chintana (contemplation of the Divine). Since people do not think of God, they are subject to many forms of suffering. Without divine thoughts, a person harbors two bad qualities. First, they conceal many faults and evil thoughts within themselves. Second, they magnify even insignificant faults in others. Because of such bad qualities, diseases also increase among people. Only when a person makes an effort, with God’s grace, are good results achieved. A Sanskrit saying states: “Dharmartha Kama Mokshanam Arogyam Mulam Uttamam” (Good health is essential for attaining the four goals of life). Even if a person possesses all the wealth in the world, if their health is impaired, they are unhappy. Whether one lives in the countryside or in a city, good health is the most important asset to strive for in order to lead a fulfilling life. — Divine Discourse, January 29, 1994.

The human mind shines with magnificent purity when it cultivates noble thoughts, ideas, and feelings. Only by developing purity of mind can we ensure purity in our actions. Only pure actions can bring pure results.

What sins should we avoid while living in society? Bhagavan lovingly points this out in the form of a dialogue between Prahlada and his father.

Prahlada said to Hiranyakashipu: "You commit crimes against society, relying on Brahma's boons. Your ego will completely destroy you. To attain God, you need humility. Father! Education without character, worship without sacrifice, wealth without effort, politics without principles—these sins are the basis of all the world's sorrows." What are society's sins? Education without character is one of them. Wealth without hard work is another. We must make an effort! Without effort, how can we expect anything in return? Next, worship without sacrifice. Yes, you all pray. But it is prayer without sacrifice. Only sacrifice brings bliss in worship. Politics without principles and science without human values are gaining momentum. If science had principles, how could bombs and other means of suppressing the population have come into existence? Human values in science have declined. — Ch. 8, Summer Showers 1995.

If you do not act on the basis of principles, all your education becomes useless.

Why are self-control and discipline important on the path of sadhana? Bhagavan lovingly reminds us of this today.

Control gives power; it lends greater strength; discipline reveals Divinity. People crave happiness. But can it be attained by giving free rein to the senses? Can one be happy by eating four times a day, driving prestigious cars, or living in multi-room bungalows? No. Happiness lies in helping others. It is attained through giving, not accumulating. Indulgence in the senses turns a person into an animal and plunges them into filth and disgrace. A yogi is one who has focused their mind on the Divine, not on the worldly. The Gita instructs people to transform themselves: "Satatam Yoginah—be a yogi always." But a person is a yogi in the morning, becoming a bhogi (a sensual person) at noon and a rogi (a sinful person) at the end of the day! Today, people live without faith and ideals. Dharma (righteous living) should be the foundation, and moksha (liberation) the superstructure; but the world neglects both and relies on artha (wealth) and kama (desire) for happiness and liberation! — Divine Discourse, April 13, 1981.

Discipline should govern every action you take throughout the day.
