40 MESSAGES FROM SWAMI TO HIS DEVOTEES
Compiled by Professor Anil Kumar
💕
🙏

1. Those who are devoted to Me in thought, word, and deed will receive My protection without asking for it.
2. I always reside in the homes of My devotees.
3. Those who sincerely utter My name even once will receive the abundant grace of My love.
4. As soon as you think of Me, I will be there with you to guide you through all your confusion.
5. I always respond to prayer instantly.
6. When you do not receive what you desire, know that I have responded that way for your own good.
7. I remain with you even if you have turned away from Me.
8. I always look at you through the eyes of My heart.
9. I will destroy the negativity within you with My love for you.
10. I pretend not to notice you only so that you will turn onto the right path.
11. I am never angry with you, but I firmly resolve your worldly affairs.
12. I alone stand and bear the burden of your worries and tears.
13. When you feel fear while carrying out a task, it is because you have rejected Me and your own truth.
14. Give up your desires. Then all your actions and duties will become Mine.
15. I sent you to fight this battle of life in My chariot, with My horses and with Me as your charioteer.
16. Your devotion is My breath, My only food.
17. I I will never forsake you. You are Mine, even when you are unaware of it.
18. You do not need to seek the truth. You are the truth. Only My light will help you see this, and I will bless you with it.
19. There is nothing difficult, nothing painful, nothing unbearable. I am the One who has to face your suffering; you need only remember to turn to Me.
20. I am always glad for you, whatever you choose, for I know that, whatever you do, I will be there to protect you from all evil.
21. Never be afraid of Me. I am your root. If you fear Me, you will lose true vision.
22. I will set you free. This is My solemn promise. Believe, and this faith will bring you back to Me.
23. Live My life, loving everyone equally; then misfortune will fear your door!
24. Did you wake up with a new worry? Have you forgotten Me again?
25. I never speak in vain or say what I do not mean. My words have the power of My presence.
26. I do not bargain, negotiate, or compromise. I do everything that must be done, to the very end.
27. I listen patiently to what you want to say. In the same way, you must patiently listen to what I say.
28. Sometimes I give you what you desire, only so that one day you will voluntarily uproot the root of that desire and cast away its rotting fruits.
29. I never remain deaf to your pleas.
30. I know every part of your life, the life of your of the past and of the life to come. I am always preparing you for all this.
31. I do not change your thoughts; I change your ways through My example.
32. I Myself endure many sufferings so that you may learn to live with awareness of one truth alone and pay no attention to the destructive calls of nature.
33. I will teach you the perfect way of life—a life of pure, unconditional love.
34. I alone test you, and again, in this trial, I alone help you succeed.
35. When you are lonely, you will hear My voice within.
36. The greatest proof of My presence within you is that you always want to live for Me, sometimes consciously and sometimes not.
37. Even when no one understands you, I alone always understand you, and I alone will lead you out of trouble.
38. I am attached to your love just as strongly as you are attached to Mine.
39. There is no distance between you and Me. I am as close to you as you are to yourself.
40. I am beside you right now, at this very moment. While you are wondering whether this is true, I too am wondering what else, My dear, I can do besides being with you!

LOVE ALL, SERVE ALL

What progress should we make in this process of seeking happiness that we call life? Bhagavan lovingly explains and encourages us today.

People still believe that ananda can be found in the external world. They accumulate wealth, power, fame, and knowledge in order to find happiness. But they discover that these are accompanied by fear, anxiety, and pain. The millionaire is besieged by the tax collector, the swindler, the seeker of donations, the burglar, as well as by his sons and relatives, eager to get their share. Happiness of material origin is short-lived, and its reverse side is suffering. Strive for the realization of the Atma, for the vision of God; even failure in this struggle is nobler than success in other worldly pursuits. A buffalo has horns, and an elephant has tusks. But what is the difference? To live in the body, with the body, and for the body is the life of a worm; to live in the body, with God, and for God is the life of a human being. Sluggish, activity-hating tamasic people cling to the ego and to their relatives; their love is limited to these alone. Rajasic people (active and passionate) strive to gain power and prestige and love only those who help them achieve this. But sattvic people (pure, kind, and filled with peace) love everyone as embodiments of God and engage in humble service. — Divine Discourse, May 24, 1967

God alone is always your sole refuge, whoever you are and wherever you may be.

— BABA

The most important thing is to achieve one-pointedness of mind, an equal attitude toward everything, free from likes and dislikes, rather than acquiring the ability to engage in discussions.

What are spiritual practices, repetition of God's Name, meditation, prayers, and so on for? Are they not meant to teach us concentration, help us attain purposefulness and one-pointedness of mind?

Once a person has attained one-pointedness of mind, they will no longer need to exert effort, because the meaning of life will be revealed to them. Therefore, those who wish to become spiritual seekers should not engage in debates or search for arguments and counterarguments. They should not fall prey to the tricks of negative feelings. They should notice their own mistakes and not repeat them.

They should preserve and protect the one-pointedness of mind they have developed.
Their eyes should be fixed on the Goal.
Whatever difficulties, defeats, and inconveniences they encounter on their Path, they should cast aside as unworthy of attention.
They should keep their attention on those objects that bring enthusiasm and joy, and not waste precious time on countless doubts about every matter.

Spiritual practice begins with control of the tongue.
And the reason for this is that the tongue performs two functions.
The eyes have one ability—to see.
The ears also have one ability—to hear.
The nose—to smell.
But the tongue has two abilities: it can speak, and it can taste. Therefore, special effort is required to control it. You have no right to criticize others, and you have no right to think badly of others. It is far better to repent your own shortcomings.
See the good in others and eliminate the bad in yourself. If you have not yet developed the ability to examine your own self, how can you claim the right to interfere in the affairs of others?
First attain self-realization in your own life.
Only by freeing yourself can you become an instrument for saving others. Therefore, you should not use bad words, look at others with ill intent, or harbor bad thoughts toward anyone else.
Spend your time thinking about what is good, listening to what is good, and speaking about what is good.

Sri Sathya Sai Baba

What does the name “Sai Baba” mean? The syllable “Sai” means “Sahasrapadma (the thousand-petaled Lotus)—the State of Pure Divine Consciousness and the Direct Experience of the Lord.” The second syllable, “Ayi,” means “Mother,” while “Baba” means “Father.” Thus, “Sai Baba” means “He Who is simultaneously both Father and Mother, and the Goal of all Yogic practices—the All-Merciful Mother, the All-Wise Father, and the Goal of all spiritual efforts.” If you remain in a room without light and move around it by touch, you should take advantage of the opportunity when someone brings a lamp into it, should you not? You should quickly gather the scattered things or see where they are, and have time to do other tasks that require illumination. In the same way, do not miss the opportunity when the Lord descends in human form and comes to your door, ready to save you from all impending calamities!

One who condemns themselves day and night as insignificant and weak will never be able to accomplish anything. One who thinks they are a failure and a nobody thereby becomes a failure and an insignificant person. If, instead, you develop the awareness that you are a spark of God, that your reality is Divinity itself, you truly can become genuinely Divine and gain access to all the necessary powers. “As you consider yourself, so shall you become” (Yad bhaavam, thad bhavathi). What you feel and believe is of the utmost importance. It is the foundation of everything within you. Have faith in the Atma, in the “I.” This is necessary for a person. In the absence of such faith, a person degenerates into a monster who revels in vice and evil. Your ancestors attained prosperity, peace, and joy and succeeded in achieving their goals solely because of this faith. If people lose this faith, they are doomed to fall. The reason is that this faith is life’s very breath.

Summer Rains in Vrindavan

[21.08, 09:41] Nurania: Shiva said:
This God cannot be worshipped with material offerings, but only through one's own awareness. Not by waving lamps or lighting fragrant candles, not by offering flowers or even food. He is attained without the slightest effort; he is worshipped only through self-awareness. This is the highest meditation and the highest worship—the constant, uninterrupted feeling of the inner presence, the inner light, or awareness. Whatever you are doing—seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, moving, sleeping, breathing, or talking—you must know your true nature as the nature of pure consciousness. This is how liberation is attained.

As soon as you realize that the world is the stage for His play, you will no longer fall into delusion or become upset, nor will you be deceived by any trick or stage effect. Seeing the illusory world, you should take an interest in the Author, the Director.

God is truly more real than the world. Know Him and you will become free! This is the essence of the Holy Scriptures.

Sathya Sai Baba.

You strive to earn as much money as possible. You take pride in your property and wealth. However, the day will inevitably come when you must leave behind the wealth you have accumulated and depart empty-handed. Instead of saving money or putting it in a bank, open an account in God's bank right now. He gladly accepts deposits and keeps the accounts strictly and confidentially. The Lord takes into account even the smallest deposit: all your thoughts, words, and actions, whether good, bad, or neutral. None of your loved ones will be able to claim your wealth. There are no taxes in this bank, and no one can steal anything. No fraudster will be able to take your savings for themselves!
This deposit, opened for your well-being, will remain valid both in this world and the world beyond. It will grow in proportion to your spiritual efforts and bring you true happiness and peace. While you develop the habit of saving money for old age and for a “rainy day,” you need to accumulate enough “savings” to attain liberation—that is the true purpose of life!

Sathya Sai Baba.

What “pitfalls” should we beware of in our spiritual practice? Today, Bhagavan lovingly explains this to us.

Life is a march against enemies, a struggle with obstacles, temptations, difficulties, and wavering. These enemies are within a person, so the struggle must be continuous and unceasing. Like a virus multiplying in the blood, the vices of lust, greed, hatred, malice, pride, and envy drain a person’s energy and faith and lead to their premature downfall. Ravana possessed learning, strength, wealth, power, might, and God’s grace. But the virus of lust and pride that took root in his mind led to his destruction, despite all his achievements! As soon as the virus began to act, he could not remain in peace and joy even for a minute. Virtue is strength; vice is weakness. One person differs from another in this struggle with inner enemies. Each receives the result merited by their Sadhana and by their actions in this and previous births! Life is not a mathematical formula in which 2 + 2 always equals 4. For some, it may be 3; for others, 5, depending on how each person evaluates 2. Moreover, on the spiritual path, everyone must move forward from the place where they already are, at their own pace and in the direction of the light of the lamp each person holds in their hand. — Divine Discourse, March 16, 1966
Sri Sathya Sai Baba

As long as a person remains caught in the web of delusion laid by the inner enemies, the aspiration for liberation will not arise in their consciousness.

What is the purpose of worshipping images of Deities as manifestations of Divinity? What benefit should we derive from such worship? Let us hear about this from Bhagavan Himself!

You may install images of Deities and worship them. But do not forget the inner meaning of worship. All external activity is needed only to help you acquire the spirit of non-duality and experience unity in diversity. Love and sacrifice are very important. Where there is pure, immaculate, selfless, sacred and exalted love, there is no fear. Giving, rather than receiving—that is the fundamental principle of spiritual sadhana. Your heart is filled with love, but you use it only for selfish purposes instead of directing it toward God. God dwells in the heart, not in the head. The heart is Prema-mayam (filled with love). During these festive days, you should remember that God is One, and that all religions uphold the same principle: “God is One, and He is omnipresent.” We should not treat any religion with contempt, for each one is a path to God. By cultivating love for your fellow beings, receive exalted Divine Love. This is the purpose of life.
- Divine Discourse, September 9, 1994
Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Perform your worship of the Divine with the awareness of the truth that the Divine is omnipresent and therefore is present in the image of the Deity being worshipped.

“As Truth shines through the window of thoughts and words, so God manifests through the Christ Consciousness and vibrational creation. When the beads of nations are not held together by the thread of universal perception of Christ Consciousness, the Christ World, they fall apart, striking against and shattering on the rocks of selfishness. The Christ of Christmas must be celebrated in the love of the hearts of all races for one another.

I pray that Christ may be born in the cradle of a new international understanding; that from the dark night of war, the star of Christ’s Love may illuminate a new United World. I pray that Christ may be born in all nations as the love of unity, in all people as spiritual aspiration, in true friends as the Divine Friend, in the disciples of this path as Self-Realization, and in all deeply devoted souls as eternal, ever-new Joy and imperishable Wisdom.

Earthly possessions and glory all disappear, but Divine possessions endure forever, serving the highest good. Why worship material comfort on the altar of change? Learn to worship spiritual comfort in the temple of imperishability. The best way to transform earthly accumulations into imperishable heavenly treasure is to use them for spiritual service. Christ must be lived in order to be known. In all good deeds, in every material and spiritual service, and in the manger of meditation, the immortal Cosmic Christ is born anew.

No one can know this Christ by reading books on theology; His presence must be felt in the bower of deep meditation. In the cradle of meditative thoughts, woven from the tender twigs of devotion, behold the newborn Christ, lulled by the cooing dove of inner peace.”

Paramahansa Yogananda 🙏

What is the true Kurukshetra, and what eternal battle takes place there? Bhagavan lovingly inspires us so that we may secure our own victory.

Our body itself can be called Dharmakshetra. When a child is born, it is pure and innocent. It has not yet fallen victim to any of the six “enemies of man”—anger, greed, lust, selfishness, pride, and envy. It is always happy and cries only when it is hungry. Whoever caresses it, whether a king or a commoner, a saint or a thief, the child will be happy. A child’s body is not influenced by any of the three gunas (inborn qualities) and is Dharmakshetra. As the body grows, it begins to accumulate qualities such as jealousy, hatred, and attachment. As these bad tendencies develop, the body becomes “Kurukshetra.” The battle between the Pandavas and the Kauravas lasted no more than 18 days, while the war between the good and bad qualities within us continues throughout our entire lives. Rajas-guna and tamas-guna (the qualities of activity and inertia) are associated with the ego and the feeling of “mine.” The very word “Pandava” signifies purity and a sattvic nature. “Pandu” means spotless and pure. The children of Pandu, the five Pandavas, were pure. The war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas symbolizes the inner war within each of us—the war of sattva-guna against the other two gunas, rajas and tamas.
– Divine Discourse, September 5, 1984
Sri Sathya Sai Baba

The mind is Kurukshetra (the battlefield), where good and evil, truth and falsehood, struggle for supremacy.

How can we cultivate good qualities and prepare the heart for the harvest of bliss? Bhagavan lovingly reminds us of this today.

Cultivating good qualities entails getting rid of all bad qualities. Among the latter, two are particularly undesirable: asuya (envy) and dvesha (hatred). These two bad qualities are like two conspirators: one assists and incites the other in all its actions. Asuya is like a pest that attacks the root of a tree. Dvesha is like an insect that attacks the branches, leaves, and flowers. When they unite, the tree—which may appear beautiful and flourishing—is completely destroyed. Similarly, asuya attacks a person from within and remains unseen. Dvesha manifests itself openly. It is unlikely that there is anyone free from the vice of envy. Envy can arise over even the most trivial matter, and hatred arises from envy. To get rid of hatred, one must constantly practice love. Where there is love, there is no room for envy and hatred; and where there is no envy and hatred, there is ananda (true joy).

LOVE AND DESIRES
(Sri Sri Ravi Shankar)

Two things make you dance in your life: one is your desire, the other is love.

Your desires arising from the mind keep you tense and make you dance throughout your life. One desire is fulfilled and gives rise to ten more, and you spend your whole life running to fulfill them one after another. You spin on a carousel (suffering—going around in circles). If you look closely at this and become aware of the dance these desires make you perform, you will be amazed—it may be a very subtle desire that penetrates your heart and closes it, making you dance tensely.

But there is another type of dance that comes from the heart—the feeling of joy that arises from love.

It is deep love that makes you dance lightly and beautifully, without tension or suffering. In this dance you do not get tired. In love you do not experience upheaval. You shake the whole world with your beauty. Not only the world, but the entire universe. You make angels and gods dance.

What should we learn from the ordinary light and flame that we use in our daily lives, and what should we remember every day? Bhagavan explains and inspires us today with warmth and love.

Only light has the power to dispel darkness. Light has another power as well. Light (or a flame) always moves upward. Even if you hold a lamp in a pit, the light will spread only upward. The two important qualities of light are dispelling darkness and rising upward. However, for the light to shine without interruption, like Akhanda Jyoti, it needs a suitable foundation. First, light needs a vessel. For a flame to burn, there must be a wick. The wick and the container must contain oil. However, these three elements are not enough for the lamp to burn. To light the lamp, a match is needed. Can you make a lamp burn with only a container, a wick, and oil? Can you make jewelry if you have only gold and precious stones? Can you make a garland if you have only a needle, thread, and flowers? You need someone to make a garland from them. You need a jeweler to make jewelry from gold and precious stones. Likewise, someone is needed to light the lamp, even if you have all the other four materials. That someone is God.
— Divine Discourse, October 20, 1990
Sri Sathya Sai Baba

See the hand of God in everything that happens; then you will neither rejoice nor grieve. Then your life will be one continuous act of worship or meditation.

What must each of us do before leaving this stage of life? Bhagavan explains, quoting several great figures from the past.

Socrates gathered young people around him and explained to them how to investigate what is transient and what is eternal. He told them that only those who possess devotion and selflessness have the right to wield power. A ruler must adhere to truth and express gratitude to God. Inflated by ego, he must not forget the Supreme. Those who disliked Socrates’ teachings brought charges against him. When he was sentenced to death, he decided to die by drinking a cup of hemlock* from the hands of his disciples. Before his death, he told his disciples that no one should die leaving an unpaid debt. Socrates told a disciple that he owed a rooster to a friend and asked him to fulfill this obligation. The Prophet Muhammad told his disciples before his death that the money he owed to a camel driver had to be paid before his end came. Freedom from debt is considered a pious obligation. Harishchandra sacrificed everything in order to keep the word he had given. All religions have emphasized the greatness of truth, sacrifice, and unity.

Just as electricity that lights every bulb, whether weak or strong, your God is present in every living being!

If you have no love, you can do whatever you want: pray to all the gods of this world, throw yourself wholeheartedly into your work, fight poverty, go into politics, write books and compose poetry—you are still dead. Without love, all your problems will only double, becoming infinite.

However, through love you can do whatever you wish, for there is then no danger and no conflict. Then existence becomes a virtue.

A spirit that does not live in a state of Love cannot be a spirit at all. Only the soul that knows the beauty and truth of love is free from problems.

What promise should we make to our Lord, and how should we follow it every day? Bhagawan lovingly guides us on our journey toward Him today.

Always try to put yourself in another person’s place and evaluate your actions from that perspective. Then you will not go wrong. Be pure in your words and deeds, and do not allow impure thoughts. I am in each one of you, and therefore I know the slightest movements of your thoughts. When clothes become dirty, you must send them to be washed. When your mind is polluted, you must be born again for the process of purification. The dhobi (washerman) beats the cloth against a hard stone and runs a hot iron over it to smooth out the wrinkles. Likewise, you will have to pass through a series of trials in order to become capable of approaching God. Regard Me as living in every person; offer them whatever help and service they need; do not withhold a kind word, a helping hand, an encouraging smile, comforting company, or a consoling conversation.
- Divine Discourse, October 11, 1969

God endowed human beings with all the organs of perception and action, not for selfish acts, but for performing righteous deeds and helping others.

“You are your deepest desire that drives you. As is your desire, so is your will. As is your will, so is your action. As is your action, so is your destiny.”
