Let us first read the definition:

Hibernation (winter — hibernation, summer — estivation) is a period of slowed vital processes and metabolism during periods when food is scarcely available, making it impossible to maintain activity and a high metabolic rate. It is characterized by a decrease in body temperature, slowed breathing and heartbeat, and the suppression of nervous activity and other physiological processes.

Now I think it is clear why this is a topic of Autonomy.

I will consider hibernation using the bear as an example. Physiologically, it is quite similar to a human; even its body temperature and heartbeat rhythm are almost the same.
Like humans, bears can be omnivorous, which is rare in the animal world. That is, a bear can be either a vegetarian or a meat-eater (for example, eating fish).

A bear’s hibernation can last up to 6 months, that is, half a year.

An interesting fact:

Some bear species spend part of their pregnancy in hibernation, and in this case, they give birth immediately after emerging from hibernation.

For some reason, few people consider the possibility that humans may have experienced something similar. 1. Pregnancy, 2. Some kind of analogue of hibernation (more exalted), 3. The birth of a child.

Bear hibernation can last up to half a year in some cases. During hibernation, some species, such as the American black bear (Ursus americanus), reduce their heart rate from 55 beats per minute to approximately 9. Their metabolic rate decreases by 53%. Naturally, during all this time, bears do not eat, drink, or produce waste. How do they manage it?

I especially want to emphasize that bears do not undergo anabiosis. The situation with a bear, for example, is simply a special mode of functioning of the body and brain.

Bears do not eat, drink, or defecate for half a year.
Scientists call this phenomenon unique in the animal world!

“They can spend the entire winter using only oxygen for breathing— that is all they need,” says scientist Brian Barnes of the Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. This scientist spent three years studying the hibernation patterns of black bears.
This scientist says one more important thing:
“All animals that hibernate increase their lifespan,” says Bieber. “Hibernation slows the pace of life.”

So, let us return to the question: how do they manage it? What do they “EAT”?

Scientists say that it is fats and glycogen.

This short sentence, highlighted in bold, may contain extremely important information for those who want to free themselves from food and transition to Autonomy.
In other words, if a nutritional regimen provides these two components, then, at the very least, one could live on them alone for half a year.
All of this is approximate data requiring further research.

I must draw your attention to the fact that bears are not the only ones with this ABILITY. There are beings living around us that use it for their own purposes.
As a rule, it is all connected with food. For example, when a drought occurs and food disappears, some groundhog may enter this state: it lowers its metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature. And it does not eat. Yet it continues to live.

That is, I will repeat once again: the animal world around us makes quite active use of this remarkable TOOL. Not only bears.
And, of course, humans, as the most intelligent species, can use it in a much more conscious and controllable way.

Nevertheless, humans do feel increased sleepiness during the winter period. Something of our Nature still lives within us.
But many people kill the Nature within themselves through gluttony.

The state of hibernation occurs precisely as a response to some change in nutrition—namely, its reduction.

We know that, for now, only a few yogis slow their breathing, pulse, and metabolism, and reduce their food intake to a minimum. All of this is what we see in Nature under the name “hibernation.”

Winter is not an obligatory condition at all. Food is the main condition for hibernation, as I said above. In winter, it is more difficult for many to find food. For some, it may be during the heat in the desert.

Some information from a scientist: anesthesiologist Rob Henning of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands:

By the way, Henning also works for NASA on space programs.

“Animals that spend six months in hibernation do not suffer from muscle atrophy or osteoporosis,” says Henning.
“There is evidence that hibernating animals are protected from the destructive effects of radiation, and in space this is truly very important,” says Henning.

And you understand why these scientific facts are so important to NASA.

At present, people can remain in space for only about a year; if a person spends more than a year in space, the risk of developing cancer increases significantly.
“If we could make people hibernate and provide them with protection, this would allow us to undertake much longer space missions,” says Henning.

“If we understand the sequence of neuroendocrine regulation, the time will come when we can make a person hibernate,” Ruoff asserts. “We know that other primates, such as Madagascar lemurs, hibernate, and accordingly we have the genetic structure needed to produce the required substances and sequences.”

“I see no reason why this should be impossible,” says Henning. “It is not quite a ‘yes,’ but it is fairly close. Hibernating animals can be found anywhere, and I see no reason why humans cannot belong to this category.”


For example, a study conducted in 2008 found that polar bears do not lose bone mass during hibernation.
They are the only mammals that manage to avoid this. It was found that pregnant polar bears living in the wild tolerate six months of hibernation better than brown bears.
Perhaps understanding this mechanism could help us study and treat osteoporosis in humans.
