This is what Akhenaten looks like:
This is what the Hymn looks like:
This is what the translation of the Hymn looks like:
(1) Living is the god Ra, rejoicing in the firmament; in his name is the name Shu—he is Aten. May he live forever and ever, the living and great Aten, Lord of all that the solar disk encompasses, Lord of heaven and Lord of earth, Lord of the temple of Aten in Akhetaten; and glory to the king of Upper and Lower Egypt, living in truth, glory to the Lord of the Two Lands, Neferkheperura, the sole one of Ra; son of Ra, living in truth, Lord of Crowns, Akhenaten—may his days be prolonged!—glory to the great queen beloved of the king, Lady of the Two Lands, Neferneferuaten Nefertiti—may she live, be healthy, and remain young forever and ever!
(2) You shine beautifully in the sky’s heights, living disk, origin of life! You have risen in the eastern heights of heaven and filled the whole earth with your beauty. You are beautiful, great, radiant! You are high above all the earth! Your rays embrace all lands, to the limits of all that you have created.
(3) You are Ra; you reach the limits.
You subdue distant lands for the son whom you love. You are far away, yet your rays are upon the earth; before people […] your movement. You set in the western heights of heaven, and the earth is in darkness, like one seized by death. People sleep in their houses, their heads covered; one eye does not see another, and their possessions hidden beneath their headrests are stolen, while they know nothing.
(4) The lion leaves its lair. Snakes bite people in the darkness when night comes and the earth sinks into silence, for the creator of all has set in his horizon. The earth is illuminated when you rise in the sky; you shine like the solar disk, scattering the darkness and generously sending forth your rays. The Two Lands awaken, rejoicing, and rise to their feet. You have awakened them, and they wash their bodies and take their clothing.
(5) Their arms reach out to you; they praise you when you shine over the whole earth, and they work, carrying out their tasks. The cattle rejoice in their pastures, the trees and plants turn green, birds fly from their nests, and their wings praise your soul. All animals leap upon their feet; everything winged flies on its wings—
(6) all come alive when you illuminate them with your radiance. Ships sail north and south; every route is open when you shine. Fish in the river frolic before your face; your rays [проникают] into the depths of the sea. You create the pearl in the shell, you create the seed in man, you give life to the son in his mother’s womb, you calm the child—and he does not cry—you nourish him
(7) in the womb; you grant breath to what you have created at the moment when the child emerges from the womb […I day of his birth; you open his mouth and create everything he needs. When a chick is in the egg and its voice is heard, you send it breath through the shell and give it life. You appoint the time for it to break the egg, and behold, it emerges from the egg to make its voice heard at the time you have appointed. And it walks on its little feet when it leaves its egg. O, how many are the things you have created, hidden from the world of men, O sole god,
(8) there is none other besides you! You were alone, and created the earth according to the desire of your heart—the earth with people, cattle, and all animals that walk upon their feet below and fly upon their wings above. Foreign lands, Syria, Kush, Egypt—you have assigned every person his place. You create everything they need. Each has their own food, and each is allotted the length of their life. The languages of people differ from one another, their forms are unlike, and
(9) so is the color of their skin, for you have distinguished one land from another. You created the Nile in the underworld and brought it forth upon the earth according to your will, to prolong the lives of people—just as you granted them life by creating them for yourself, O universal Lord, weary from your labors, Lord of all lands, rising for their sake, daytime solar disk, great and revered! All foreign and distant lands were created by you and live by your grace—for you granted the heavens their Nile, so that it might fall upon the earth—
(10) and behold, upon the mountains are waves like sea waves, and they water each person’s field in his region. How beautiful are your decrees, Lord of eternity! The Nile in heaven is for foreigners and for wild animals with four legs, while the Nile emerging from the underworld is for the Beloved Land. Your rays nourish all fields: you rise, and they live and flourish. You established the course of time so that what you have created might be born again and again—you established
(11) winter to cool your fields, heat to […] You created the distant sky in order to rise upon it and see everything you have created. You alone rise in your form, living Aten, shining and radiant, far and near! From yourself, alone, you create millions of your forms. Cities and villages, fields and roads, and the River behold you; every eye is directed toward you when you, the daytime solar disk,
(12) [……………………].
You are in my heart, and there is no one else who knows you except your son Neferkheperura, the sole one of Ra. You grant your son understanding of your decrees and your power. The whole earth is in the power of your right hand, for you created people; you rise, and they live; you set, and they die. You are the measure of their lives; they live in you. Until your setting, all eyes are turned toward your beauty. All work ceases when you set in the west. When you rise, you command [..] to flourish for the king. All feet hurry since you established the foundations of the earth. You awaken everyone for your son, who came forth from your flesh, for the king of Upper and Lower Egypt, living in truth, Lord of the Two Lands, Neferkheperura, the sole one of Ra, son of Ra, living in truth, Lord of Crowns, Akhenaten, the great—may his days be prolonged!—and for the great queen beloved of the king, Lady of the Two Lands, Neferneferuaten Nefertiti—may she live and remain young forever and ever!
