Why should we thank God? What tax does He expect from us as a sign of our gratitude? Today, Bhagawan lovingly explains to us the fundamental principles of human life.

A synonym for sacrifice (tyaga) is Bali. Bali means offering, dedication, sacrifice, and the collection of taxes. What taxes? Bali indicates what a person should offer as an offering to God. In ancient times, people believed that living beings had to be offered in sacrifice. This is a mistaken understanding of the word Bali. Bali is the recognition of the presence of the Divine in a person. People pay the authorities a water tax because they supply their homes with water from distant sources. People also pay the authorities for the electricity they use. What tax do you pay God for endowing you with divinity while you consider yourself far from God because of your immersion in worldly affairs? You pay for a small amount of water and electricity. But what do you pay for the torrential rain you receive from God? He fills reservoirs and rivers with water. He supplies you with life-giving oxygen in the air you breathe. The sun illuminates the entire world with its light. What tax do we pay for all these services? Arpitam (gratitude to God) is the tax. This is called Bali. There is no need to be afraid of the term Bali. It simply means offering yourself to God.
- Divine Discourse, September 5, 1995.

You must bring your feelings, principles of life, and speech into unity and offer yourself to God.

What is the significance of the festival of "Thiru-Onam," celebrated by all the people of Kerala, and what can it teach us? Bhagawan lovingly explains this to us today.

Bali realized that not even a blade of grass moves without the Divine power. "No one can comprehend the supreme power of God. He pervades everything in the cosmos—from the ant to Brahman. People do not know this truth," he declared. Emperor Bali completely dedicated himself to God. Under his rule, all his subjects were happy and led virtuous lives. Saddened by the thought that he would have to leave his people, he said: "Dear people! I cannot be without you, and you cannot be without me. Every year I will appear before you and bring you joy." Onam is the day when Bali fulfills his promise. Waking early in the morning, bathing, putting on new clothes, and worshipping God, people celebrate Onam. What is the significance of wearing new clothes (Vastra)? Vastra is one of the names for the heart. Putting on new clothes signifies cleansing the heart. When the heart is pure, God chooses to dwell in it. There is no point in wearing new clothes if the heart remains impure. Therefore, keep your heart pure. The ruler must be worthy of his subjects, and the subjects must be worthy of their ruler. Harmony between them is essential. - Divine Discourse, September 5, 1995.

For a selfless devotee, the Divine will be omnipresent.

Because Prahlada endured numerous difficulties and sufferings throughout his life, the whole world today knows how great his Devotion to God was. When the demons inflicted suffering on Prahlada, he did not show them his pain or shed a single tear.
He Chanted the Name of God and only asked the Lord to come to him. His Calmness and Self-Control, both in moments of suffering and pleasure, remain even today a vivid example of what True Faith and Devotion to God are capable of.
On the other hand, if Prahlada had lived with his father in luxury, surrounded by Love and care, how would the world have learned about his Faith and Devotion?
Even a diamond of the highest quality acquires its true value only after being cut. Pure gold will not become a beautiful ornament unless it is placed in the fire and shaped. Therefore, in all troubles and hardships, we should see the Path to attaining Supreme Happiness (Everlasting Bliss).

What do we need to develop in honor of the New Year? Bhagavan lovingly explains and bestows His blessings.

People speak of the New Year, but do not concern themselves with developing new feelings and a new attitude toward life. They should develop new ideas and new inspiration. If they are depressed all the time, when will they learn to express the joy of a good life? They should radiate happiness. This is a sign of Divinity within. Happiness is union with God. God is everlasting bliss. Rid yourselves of your evil tendencies and fill your hearts with love for God. You will become one with Him. I am ready to give happiness to all of you. Are you ready to receive what I wish to offer? Cast aside all worries. They are temporary, like passing clouds. Do not allow anyone—whether father, mother, or teacher—to come between you and your duty to God. This is the lesson taught by Prahlada, Bharata, and Emperor Bali. Their loyalty to the Lord surpassed all other obligations. God cares for such devotees. Surrender to God and dedicate yourselves to serving humanity. You have My blessings. Cultivate love and serve society.

Divine Discourse, March 29, 1998

What should concern us is not the New Year, but a new way of life. We should strive to find a new source of joy.

How can we make our worship truthful and complete? Today, Bhagawan lovingly reminds us of what He truly loves to receive.

Worship the Lord and offer Him the flowers of nonviolence, control of the senses, compassion, steadfastness, peace, austerity, meditation, and truth. When other flowers are used, devotion ends as soon as a person leaves the altar room! As soon as the person crosses the threshold, anger, hatred, and anxiety take hold of and humiliate them. Without developing the qualities represented by the eight flowers, how can one win God’s grace? By practicing the “Asatya Narayana Vrata” (the false Satyanarayana vow) for all 364 days, what benefit do you hope to gain by performing the true Satya Narayana Vrata on the 365th day of the year? Claiming to be Sai devotees, substantiate that claim by growing the flowers of virtue and offering them to God. — Divine Discourse, October 6, 1981

True worship consists in seeing all forms as one and worshipping the Divine in the form of Love and Truth.

How should we proceed toward the goal? Bhagawan describes three types of approaches and explains which one we should adopt!

Three types of devotion: (1) The bird method, in which, like a bird snatching a ripe fruit from a tree, the devotee is too impatient and, because of that very impatience, loses the fruit, which falls from their grasp! (2) The monkey method, in which, like a monkey that pulls one fruit toward itself after another and, due to its restlessness, cannot decide which fruit it wants, the devotee wavers and changes their goal too often, losing every chance of success. (3) The ant method, in which, like an ant moving slowly and steadily toward a sweet, the devotee proceeds directly toward the Lord with undivided attention and wins His grace! Devotion and faith are the two oars that carry you in a boat across the sea of worldly life. A child, going to bed, said to his mother: “Mother! Wake me when I become hungry.” The mother replied: “There is no need; your hunger itself will wake you!” Similarly, when hunger for God arises, it will itself energize you and make you seek the nourishment you need! — Divine Discourse, Shivaratri 1955

If a person does not progress on the spiritual path, they cannot be at peace with themselves or with their fellow human beings.

We are all created in the image of God or Spirit.
The nature of Spirit is omnipresence and omniscience. To be “saved” means to free oneself from the limitations imposed by the body on the soul. Delusion takes hold of you as soon as you are in a waking state.
To be “saved” means to destroy this delusion.

If you want to be saved, you must make constant efforts to give God first place in your life.
Do not think that someone else can give you salvation. Salvation can come only through your own efforts.
All the great saints have told us that we must work to make contact with God, that we must meditate and pray constantly and sincerely, and keep one thought in mind—God.
If you follow the law and have devotion, you cannot fail.

I once wanted salvation only for myself, but my Master in India said to me one day:
“You are selfish! You want to eat the cheese of Eternity all by yourself, when you should acquire it in order to give some of it to others. Ultimate happiness lies in sharing your happiness with others.”

How can we make sure that the lessons of Vedanta have been assimilated? Today, Bhagavan is gently leading us step by step.

Nowadays, people read and study all sorts of incomprehensible Vedantic texts, struggling with commentaries, notes, and translations in an attempt to understand their meaning. All of this enters their mouths, but the portion does not reach the heart to soften it. Knowledge is not put into practice. The truths of Vedanta are put on public display, as in a theatrical performance where the appropriate costumes are put on the actors onstage but removed when an actor leaves the stage. They are not followed consistently in order to attain the bliss of the soul (Atmananda) that they can provide. Above all, this is a matter of careful, timely, regulated discipline; it cannot be attained in fits and starts; one must climb to this height step by step, using each step as a foothold for the next. Virtues must be cultivated at home; every family member should share joy with the others, and everyone should seek opportunities to help others. This attitude must be maintained so that it becomes part of one’s character! How can a vessel be filled with water when it is standing upside down? It must be open to receive good impulses. Assimilate each lesson through systematic study. Only application and effort will bring success. — Divine Discourse, September 21, 1960

Always remember the inseparable connection between unity, purity, and divinity, and strive to attain it.

A STORY FOR THE NIGHT... The Meaning of Vibhuti (Holy Ash)

Q: What about the vibhuti you materialize? I would like to know about its nature, because your critics are trying to discredit you by sending around magicians who produce exact copies of the vibhuti.

A: What I materialize is a manifestation of divinity with powerful symbolic significance. It is a symbol of the cosmic, immortal, and infinite nature of all forms of God, the atma, or spirit—in other words, that which remains when everything worldly, transient, and changeable has completely burned away.

I have spoken to you about the imperatives of a desireless life. After Shiva burned the god of desire, Kama, turning him into a pile of ash, he adorned himself with this ash so that he might shine as the victor over desire. When Kama was destroyed, Prema reigned as the Goddess of Love. Such is the meaning of ash.

First, it is a symbol of the cycle of birth and death, in which everything ultimately turns to ash. “For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.” Ash or dust is the final state of things. It cannot undergo any further change. In a spiritual context, for the recipient it represents a warning to renounce desires, burn away all passions, attachments, and temptations, and cultivate purity in thoughts, words, and deeds.

To teach this lesson in its entirety, I I materialize ash for those who come to me with love and devotion. Like other materializations, it also acts as a talisman, healing the sick and providing protection for those who need it. It is a symbol of divinity, entirely different from the magicians’ tricks you mentioned.

How can we train ourselves to serve other people? And why is it necessary for us to practice this every day? Today, Bhagavan lovingly explains this to us.

Serve people without thinking in terms of high or low; no activity of service is higher or lower, they are all equal in the eyes of the Lord; what matters is the willingness, joy, effectiveness, and skill with which you strive to do it! If you do not serve a person who is your relative, who has the same feelings, impulses, and instincts as you, who is alive and before you, and who gladly accepts your service with a grateful smile, then how can you serve Madhava (God), who is so much higher and greater than you, so different from and distant from you, so powerful and mysterious? Train yourself to serve God by serving the person in whose heart God dwells! Convince yourself that serving a person is worshipping God. If you drive away someone who runs to your house to take shelter from the rain, sending them back out into the street, is that not inhumane? If you do not do everything in your power to relieve the pain from which another person is suffering, can you call yourself human? —
Sri Sathya Sai Baba

What steps must be taken to get rid of illusory duality? Today, Bhagavan lovingly reminds us of this.

First of all, one should practice the attitude “I am Yours.” Let the wave realize and acknowledge that it belongs to the ocean. This first step is not as simple as it seems. The wave needs a long time to understand that its existence is indebted to the boundless ocean. Its ego is so strong that it does not allow it to be humble enough to bow before the ocean. “I am Yours; You are the Lord. I am the servant; You are the Master. I am bound to You.” Such a mental attitude will subdue the ego. Perform only actions that have value. This religious outlook is called marjala-kishora—the attitude of a kitten toward its mother, plaintively mewing and asking for help and nourishment, which removes all traces of ego. The next step is: “You are mine,” when the wave demands support from the ocean as its right. The Lord must assume responsibility for protecting and guiding the person. The person is important and worthy of salvation, and the Lord will certainly fulfill the devotee’s needs. Surdas said: “You are mine; I will not let You go; I will hold You in my heart; You will not be able to escape.” The next stage is: “You are I,” where I am merely the image and You are Reality. I have no separate individuality; there is no duality. All is One. Duality is merely delusion.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba
— Divine Discourse, September 8, 1963.

The Lord rushes toward the devotee much faster than the devotee rushes toward Him.

Do not attach too much importance to miracles or exaggerate their significance. My power and greatness do not lie in these miracles, but only in My Love. Yes, I can turn the sky into earth and the earth into sky... Divinity descends to earth in the form of an Avatar solely out of love for humanity. All miracles are merely drops from this Ocean of Love. Do not let the glitter of these drops blind you. Look at the Ocean, approach it, and immerse yourself in its waters.
(Ganapati R. Baba: Sathya Sai. Part 2. P108)

Even if I materialize nothing for you, I will come to your aid in moments of crisis at any time and in any place, if you have deep faith and devotion toward Me. I will answer your prayers addressed to any Form and any Name, for all forms and names are Mine.” — Sathya Sai Baba

Here I will briefly tell you about “Mauna” (mauna), which means Silence. What is Mauna? The word “Mauna” consists of two words: “ma” and “na”.
“Ma” means manas (mind), and “na” means nahi (no).
Thus, “Mauna” means a state in which the mind does not exist. When can you say that there is no mind, or that the mind ceases to exist? When it is not disturbed by emotions, desires, feelings, thoughts, and so on.
When the mind ceases to exist, you can hear God.

Actually, it is desirable to remain in a constant state of “Mauna”; then you can enjoy the constant presence of God.
So, begin practicing “Mauna” starting today. Practice “Mauna” for at least half an hour every day.
You can observe “Mauna” even while doing your daily work. When the tongue is active, the ears are also open to perception, and you absorb all kinds of vibrations that act harmfully on the mind.
Therefore, the mind cannot be Calm and Quiet. But when the tongue is silent, the ears do not respond to external stimuli, and the mind is not affected by external factors. The mind, therefore, becomes Calm and Quiet,
and you can experience a feeling of deep Peace within yourself.

When the mind is full of Peace and Silence, you also possess superenergy. Instead of losing your energy in meaningless irritation and annoyance, you will be able to direct it in the right directions.
You will be able to think better and work better.
So, practice “Mauna” a little every day and discover for Yourself the benefits of the Peace and energy you can gain.

Silence is “So-Ham”; Silence is “OM”.
Silence is the Voice of Brahman. Through Silence, He can be known.
So, practice Silence in your mind and in your Heart, and you will be able to realize the Truth “You Are That”.

Sathya Sai Baba.

What role do sports and the arts play in personal development? Now, as annual cultural and sports festivals are being held at Sri Sathya Sai educational institutions, Bhagavan reminds us why such events are important and how we should prepare for them.

Students! Remember that lost wealth can be regained and lost health can be restored, but lost time is gone forever. Therefore, do not waste time. Time is God. Devote the time allotted to you to worthy endeavors, experience bliss, and share it with others. Sports and the arts are meant to bring joy. But the commercialization of sports and music has led to a decline in their significance, along with the decline of human values. There should be no place for hatred or envy in games and sports. Our students should engage in sports for health and enjoyment. The participation of students from different regions and cultures in games should help strengthen unity. Even games should be regarded as sacred. Thus, the participants become holy.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba

What is the main virtue that we should all learn and practice while participating in the activities of Sri Sathya Sai organizations? Bhagavan lovingly reminds us of this today and inspires us.

Treat every person as your brother or sister. Disagreements may sometimes arise, but they should not lead to hatred and hostility. The Pandavas are a vivid example of this. When they were in exile, Krishna visited them. Finding only Dharmaraja there, Krishna asked where the other brothers were. Dharmaraja replied that four of them had gone to find food, while the other hundred were in Hastinapura. Krishna reproached Dharmaraja for considering the Kauravas his brothers. Dharmaraja replied: "Krishna, do you not know this? When conflict arises among us internally, there are five of us and a hundred of them. But when an external danger appears, we all unite, and there are 105 of us." Differences should not divide us. Members of the Sai Organization should promote such unity. Let there be no conflicts. Live like the children of one family. Earn a good name so that there is no other organization in the world comparable to the Sai Organization. Develop love and work in unity. — Divine Discourse, November 20, 1998

The word "sin" irritates many people. I came to save and guide you. And I often use the word "sin." You ask yourself why.
The word "sin" irritates you because you have a mistaken idea of it, and therefore you see behind it an evil, vengeful God who judges you if you are dishonest. Believe Me, in reality everything is the opposite. I judge no one. You judge yourselves.
It is said: "I sinned in thought, word, and deed." What does this mean? It means that you thought, spoke, or acted in such a way that you could harm or have already harmed yourself and others. Sin is an action that continually harms you and others.
If you slap someone, there is a strong likelihood that you will receive one in return. God does absolutely nothing here. Your action itself causes a compelled reaction that comes back to you in the literal sense of the word.
Incorrect spiritual conduct, such as thinking badly of others, quickly leads to slander, which can easily lead to such a wrong action as a slap.
Therefore, sin already exists in thought.
Therefore, do not consider the word "sin" improper, but learn from it that you are all connected with one another, and therefore a small cause can have major consequences.
Keep away from the superstition that there is an evil God. Remember far more the truth that I connect you all in love and protect you. Therefore, karma is the mirror of My justice in which you see yourself.
Sai Baba

What activity does Bhagavan lovingly engage in with each one of us? Bhagavan gently explains this to us today so that we may benefit from this wisdom.

Never accept anything “for free” from others; repay it through service or work. This will make you self-respecting people. To accept grace means to become dependent on the giver. Grow with self-respect and dignity. This is the best service you can render yourself. Just as Uncle Moon shines on everyone, so the Lord is the Father of all, and everyone may claim a share in His property. But to receive it, you must attain a certain age, a certain level of intelligence and discrimination. He will not consider the weak and idiots fit to receive His property! His property is Grace, Love. If you have discrimination and renunciation, you may claim your share as your right! Bring devotion, preserve it here, and draw spiritual strength from here! The more such deeds are performed, the more pleased I am. Bring what you have—your sorrows and grief, worries and anxieties—and take from Me joy and peace, courage and confidence!

What must we do to fulfill the task for which we took this birth? Bhagavan lovingly guides us today.

In all endeavors, if you trust in the Higher Power that is ready to come to your aid, the work becomes easy. This arises from devotion and reliance on the Lord, the source of all strength. When you travel by train, you only need to buy a ticket, board the right train and take your seat; everything else is taken care of by the locomotive. Why should you carry a bed and a trunk on your head? Likewise, trust in the Lord and continue to do everything as well as you can. Have faith in the Lord and His grace. Try to earn it by using the intelligence and conscience with which He has endowed you. You were born because you had not learned certain lessons; there is a certain balance of experience that you must acquire to complete the course. If you realize that your true nature is the Atma, it means that you have completed the course and “passed.” To reach this stage, you must begin by cultivating a “sense of kinship with all beings”—“sarvasamanabhava,” as it is called. It is very difficult to attain, but it is the only way to see the Atma that is present in all.

Sri Sathya Sai Baba

God tests His devotees only to raise them to a higher step on the spiritual ladder.

How can we practice true sacrifice and service? Today, Bhagawan lovingly reminds us of this through a few simple teachings.

“Money comes and goes, but morality comes and grows.” There is nothing great about earning money. What happened to all the great kings of the past who ruled vast kingdoms? Could they take even a single pie with them when they left this world? No! Therefore, use the money you have earned for the good of humanity. Do not be proud of your wealth. Greatness lies only in self-sacrifice. Only sacrifice grants immortality. Serve in your villages. Service does not mean sweeping the roads, cleaning the temple, and feeding the poor. True service is the sincere performance of your duty. Work in accordance with the salary you receive. This is service to the nation. Ensure that the government does not suffer losses under any circumstances. We force the government to borrow because we do not contribute our share sufficiently. Everyone who is a member of the Sai Organization should work hard and wholeheartedly. Embodiments of Love! Cultivate love, take care of your health, and serve society. Then God will grant you the strength and happiness you need.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba
- Divine Discourse, November 20, 1998

Sincerely carrying out your daily work, filling your heart with love, and feeling the presence of the Divine—this is true self-surrender.

Only the Lord is your true friend. This is the reality. He is your mother, father, friend, mentor, and so on. Develop such firm conviction. Then God will always take care of you. When you develop the feeling that the one Spirit is present in everything, all divine qualities will manifest in you. You will become an ideal for the whole world. You will be free from suffering. You will realize your true nature. Never identify yourself with your body. One who realizes this truth will be blessed. Only the Lord is unchanging, and only He is your true friend and guide. You must have absolute faith in Him. Develop faith day by day. Only then can you be called a true human being.
Never be under the illusion that God is somewhere far away. He is always within you. Your reflection is God's reflection. Your reaction is His reaction. Everything is essentially divine. It is God who gives you a role in the cosmic drama. It is through Him that you sing, dance, live, and so on. He is the director of the cosmic play. You may call Him by different names. But He is one alone.

Sathya Sai Baba.

May you have a happy life in the awareness of oneness with the Creator—the truest and most reliable friend.
