There is not a single situation without a solution. Never limit your thinking to one lifetime. There is not just one life. You have already lived so many lives that you should know this.
But you forget your past lives. This is necessary so that memories do not burden or oppress you.
Always believe that My eternal justice balances everything. No one is rejected, no one is privileged. There is no injustice in the world—there is none in the entire universe.
Always remember this truth: the less a person knows, the quicker and more categorical their judgments. Do not blindly believe what your eyes see; it may lead you seriously astray.
Better believe this: God (I) has no unsolvable problems. If you do not know how to escape a dead end, ask God! Ask with all your heart, and I will help you.
Today is exactly the same as in many other lives.
Sai Baba speaks to the West.

“Humanity seeks to banish sorrow and attain happiness (ananda). What is happiness? Do wealth, power, or health bring happiness? There are many wealthy people in the world, but are they happy? There are many people endowed with power or blessed with excellent health, but are they happy? No. And the reason is that there can be no true happiness as long as people are infected with ever-insatiable egotism.”

The Parable of King Solomon

When King Solomon descended from the mountain after witnessing the sunrise, those gathered at its foot said:
— You are a source of inspiration to us. Your words transform hearts, and your wisdom enlightens the mind. We long to listen to you.
— Tell us: who are we?
He smiled and said:
— You are the light of the world. You are the stars. You are the temple of truth. The Universe is within each of you. Immerse your mind in your heart, question your heart, and listen through your love. Blessed are those who know the language of God.

— What is the meaning of life?
— Life is a journey, a goal, and a reward. Life is the dance of Love. Your purpose is to blossom. TO BE is a great gift to the world. Your life is the story of the Universe. That is why life is more beautiful than all theories. Treat life as a celebration, for life is valuable in itself. Life consists of the present. And the meaning of the present is to be in the present.

— Why do misfortunes pursue us?
— You reap what you sow. Misfortunes are your choice. Poverty is a human creation. And bitterness is the fruit of ignorance. By blaming, you lose your power, and by craving, you scatter happiness. Wake up, for a beggar is one who is unaware of themselves. And those who have not found the Kingdom of God within are homeless. Those who waste time become poor. Do not turn life into mere existence. Do not let the crowd destroy your soul. May wealth not become your curse.

What conviction and faith should we acquire through our spiritual efforts? Bhagavan lovingly and clearly teaches us today.

Cows may be of different breeds, colors, and sizes, but the milk they give is the same throughout the world. Likewise, all religions, regardless of their origin and degree of influence, are a means of teaching humanity this process (of unity, editor’s note). The rule governing people’s behavior today has become: “everyone for themselves,” because the fact that all are “one in God” has not been known and realized. This is the result of Sadhana; conviction grows slowly, but it must be acquired.
Durvasa, the great sage, was renowned in the epics for his austerity, but also for his anger when he was treated disrespectfully or disturbed. He was so sensitive, so egotistical, so arrogant that he forgot the unity of all in God. He was ready to utter a terrible curse if anyone showed disrespect to his inflated ego. What benefit was there in all those years of severe austerity? Give up everything you have and attain the Lord. — Divine Discourse, May 24, 1967

Realize that all beings are Divine. Then you will understand that all are one.

What is the purpose of our human body? How can it serve the aspirations of the heart? Bhagavan explains, reminding us of the infinitely powerful bond each of us has with Him!

The Lord has endowed human beings with a body, and therefore every part of the body and every sense deserves respectful treatment. Each of them should be used for His glory. The ear should rejoice when given the opportunity to hear wonderful stories about God. The tongue should exult when it can praise Him. Otherwise, a person’s tongue is as useless as the tongues of frogs that croak day and night while sitting on a marshy bank.
When Duryodhana told Krishna that he feared neither God nor people, he was truly pitiable! An animal (pashu) is afraid; a beast (mriga) inspires terror. A human being should be neither. One should neither live in fear nor inspire terror. One should be neither a coward nor a villain. If one is a coward, one is an animal; if one is a villain, one is a demon!
You are in Prashanti Nilayam precisely because you feel moved to use the body with which you have been endowed for this higher purpose. The kinship between each of you and Me is eternal and unchanging! It is not based on worldly relationships; it is based on the aspirations of the heart! This is Prashanti-nilaya-sambandham, the bond with the abode of Supreme Peace!
Sri Sathya Sai Baba

What are the three debts every person has, and how should they be repaid? What benefit can one gain by settling them? Bhagavan lovingly explains this to us today.

The first debt of every person is the debt to the Divine. The second is to the sages. The third is to one’s parents.
A debt is an obligation arising from what a person has received from others. We can easily identify these debts in the human body through the various divine forces present within it, nourishing and protecting it. This divine energy permeating the entire body is called Rasa (the Divine Essence).
We are forever indebted to the Divine, which not only endowed us with this precious human body but also sustains it. We will be able to enjoy these Divine gifts only if we repay our debt to God. How can we do this? By serving other bodies filled with the same Divine presence, performing righteous deeds, and dedicating all our actions to serving society. The debt to the Divine must be fully repaid in this life or over many future lives. The sooner we repay this debt, the sooner we will realize our Divinity.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba

What should we do to break free from the bonds of the ego? Bhagavan lovingly reminds us today with simple advice and examples!

Human beings are Divine by nature, and therefore, naturally, the more they manifest Divine qualities—Love, Righteousness, Truth, and Peace—the more happiness they are able to experience and share. The less they manifest them, the more ashamed they should feel for living in contradiction to their own heritage.
The Tree of Life must be watered at the roots, but today those who plan to raise the standard of living water the branches, leaves, and flowers. The roots are virtues; they must be cultivated so that the flowers of actions, words, and thoughts may bloom with fragrance and bear the fruits of seva (service), filled with the sweet nectar of ananda (bliss).
Planning for food, clothing, and housing is intended only to provide for the cart; plan also for the horse—the human mind—which must use food, clothing, shelter, and other material tools for the higher purpose of “moving from the ego into the Universal.” - Divine Discourse, August 3, 1966

If you are the master of your senses and impulses, you can be anywhere and pursue any profession. You will have peace of mind.

How can we awaken the sacred and divine aspects within ourselves? Bhagavan lovingly reminds us of this today so that we may earn God's grace.

It is said that God incarnates to foster the development of sadhus. Sadhus does not refer to the inhabitants of Himalayan caves; it denotes the righteous person who constitutes the inner essence of each of us, while the outward appearance is merely a mask worn to deceive ourselves! Each of you is a sadhu, for you are prema swarupa, shanti swarupa, amrita swarupa (embodiments of bliss, peace, and immortality). But if we allow the crust of ego to grow thick, our true nature becomes obscured. Through Satsang (the company of God-minded people), systematic attention to self-control and self-improvement, a person can overcome the delusion that makes them identify with the body, its needs, and its aspirations! When you feed a cow fermented porridge so that it will give more milk, the milk acquires an unpleasant smell. When a person becomes too preoccupied with the trivialities of the world, their behavior and character become unpleasant.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba
- Divine Discourse, September 7, 1966

You Can Attain Spiritual Realization

You may turn to any faith and become a Hindu, Christian, Parsi, Buddhist, or Muslim. You may follow any of the schools that exist in large numbers within these religions, and undoubtedly you will derive both joy and satisfaction from it. But you have no right to claim that only your faith is true while rejecting all others! All the religions of the world are united by what forms their foundation and meaning, namely, that God, or Atman, is one and only one. Only by realizing this can you attain spiritual realization, regardless of which faith you profess.

"I want all of you to build new homes for a happy life and establish the Lord in them. I do not mean houses made of bricks and cement, but homes of good thoughts, good words, good deeds, and virtuous company, where you could live peacefully, all together. Invite Me to enter this home and dwell in it, and I will most likely agree. Indeed, then the home is already Mine, and no invitation is even needed for Me to draw near and enter it. Those homes are for worldly comfort; this home is for spiritual joy. And My dwelling place is a pure, inspired heart."

Why and how should each of us serve? Bhagavan gently and lovingly reminds us of this today.

Calm your hearts and bring them into a state of peace; share this with others; worship God in this delightful form. When you reach the level necessary for seva, you will understand that it is vital to have a pure heart—untainted by vanity, greed, envy, hatred, or rivalry; faith in God is also required, as the source of life force, virtue, and justice. Seva is service that you offer to God—the spiritual heart of every person. Do not ask another person which country they are from, which caste they belong to, or which faith they profess. See your beloved form of God in this person who is "different" from you; in essence, this person is not "different" at all. They are just like you. You are not helping some "specific person"; you are serving Me in this person. I am before you in this form; where is there room here for the "cobra of ego" to spread its hood? Duty is God; work is worship. Even the tiniest task is a flower laid at the feet of God.
— Divine Discourse, March 4, 1970

Whatever you do as service, and to whomever you offer that action, believe that it reaches God in that person.

I love reading very much. Different genres. I believe that you can find something useful for yourself in any book. I even used to have a notebook where I wrote down thoughts, quotes, and sayings that I found interesting. I would like to suggest exchanging the titles of books you have read and that have touched you. Write the title, the author, and in “a few words” what the book is about.
Alan Watts — The Way of Zen.

“Wild geese do not seek to cast off their reflection,
The water does not seek to receive their image.

Aimless existence is therefore a constant theme in all genres of Zen art and expresses the inner state of the artist himself, who walks into Nowhere and exists beyond Time. This feeling sometimes comes over ordinary people as well, and it is precisely in such moments that they grasp the dazzling glimpses of the universe that illuminate in memory the images that happen to present themselves: the smell of burnt leaves at dawn on a foggy autumn morning, pigeons flying through a ray of sunlight against a backdrop of clouds, or the solitary cry of a bird in the depths of the forest. In Zen art, any landscape, any sketch of bamboo swaying in the wind, or of lonely rocks, is an echo of such moments.
If the mood of that moment expresses solitude and peace, it is called sabi. If the artist feels oppressed or sad and, in such a peculiar emptiness of feeling, catches a fleeting glimpse of something ordinary and natural in all its inexpressible “suchness,” this mood is called wabi. If the moment evokes a stronger nostalgic sadness associated with autumn and a sense of the world dying, it is called aware. When something mystical and strange emerges in what is seen, as if hinting at something unknown and forever unattainable, this mood is called yūgen. These completely untranslatable Japanese words describe the four main moods of fūryū, that is, the overall atmosphere of the “flavor” of Zen in such “aimless” moments of life.”

How can we attain perfection in the act of surrendering ourselves through a simple practice? Today, Bhagawan lovingly guides us with a powerful yet simple sadhana.

Repeat "Soham" (I am He) with each breath: "So" as you inhale and "ham" as you exhale. "So" means "He," while "ham" means "I," and when you complete the inhalation and exhalation, feel that "So," namely the Lord, and "ham," namely "I," that is, you, are One!
Later, after long practice, the perception of "He" and "I" as two separate entities will disappear, and there will no longer be "So" and "ham." These sounds will contract into "O" and "M"—this will be "Om," or Pranava. Then repeat this sound with each breath, and it will save you from bondage to birth and death, since this is Pranavopasana (meditation on Pranava), recommended in the Vedas.
Repeating Soham is a good means of restraining the mind from restlessness. Let the mind always remain attached to the Lord; then it will not scatter in all directions. This is the meaning of Krishna's teaching: Sarva dharman parityajya mam ekam sharanam vraja — Having abandoned all other pursuits (dharmas, translator's note), surrender fully to Me. — Divine Discourse, May 22, 1965

Surrender your mind completely to His service. Then He will save you from falling.

— Baba

How can we go about our daily activities while remaining focused on God at every moment of our lives? Bhagawan lovingly reminds us of this today, offering compelling examples!

Temples help soften hearts! They instill the virtues of compassion and mercy. Greed and cruelty will spread in an atmosphere devoid of devotion and reverence for God. Transform yourselves into moving temples. Realise the God who dwells within you. It is He who protects and provides for you and prevents you from becoming prey to harmful tendencies. The One is known by many names; the One is depicted in many forms. There is only one Truth. But people perceive only one facet; their vision is too limited to see the whole at once. The briefest moment of peace, the slightest sweetness of bliss experienced by any being, is merely a ripple in the ocean of peace and bliss that is God! Why, then, hate, compete in the pride of possession, and suffer from sorrow and pain? The good lies in cooperation, living in love and harmony, and constantly being aware that you are He and He is you!
- Divine Discourse, 1 June 1970

Worship the stone as God, rather than treating God as a stone!

What is the continuous yajna, or sacrifice of the animal qualities that we must perform, and why? Bhagawan guides us today with tenderness and love.

A person must constantly strive to get rid of evil tendencies. Inherited negative character traits, rooted in the mind, must be offered on the sacrificial altar. Of these traits, the worst are hatred and envy. They arise from intense egoism. These are the qualities of a leopard, and they have no place in a human being.
Some people try to pretend that they have overcome anger, hatred, envy and pride. The methods used by such people are merely the cunning tricks of a fox. Since these traits manifest from time to time, they must be eliminated immediately. This requires a continuous inner yajna (worship involving the sacrifice of one's animal qualities), unlike the outer yajna, which is performed only once a year in one specific place. The inner yajna must always be performed, everywhere and under all circumstances. The sacrificial altar of this yajna is within each of us. Whenever an evil thought or desire arises, it must be ruthlessly cut off. Only through constant vigilance and unceasing effort can one earn Divine Grace.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba

What is more important than building temples and going on pilgrimages? Bhagavan explains it clearly and lovingly for us today.

In past centuries, many sages, kings, and ascetics left their homes and lived in the solitude of forests. Having attained boundless bliss, they taught others about the source of their bliss—namely, the Divine within the human being. Rid yourselves of the vices of lust and hatred, and extinguish the raging flames of anger and greed; then, they said, the inherent shantam and sukhyam (peace and happiness), svarupam and svabhavam (one’s own form and nature) of a human being will manifest unobstructed! Shantam is the svarupam, and sukhyam is the svabhavam of a human being. (Peace is the form of a human being; happiness is the nature of a human being—translator’s note.) Personal transformation is far more important than building temples. Increase virtues, not buildings; practice what you preach—this is true pilgrimage; cleanse your mind of envy and malice—this is true bathing in holy water. What is the use of the Lord’s name on the tongue if there is no purity in the heart?
Sri Sathya Sai Baba
— Divine Discourse, March 24, 1965

Good and evil in the world can be changed only by changing people’s actions. The transformation of society must begin with the transformation of individuals.

What false notions about ourselves must we discard? Bhagavan lovingly points this out today and explains to us how we can free ourselves from them and attain our true essence.

If someone approaches a person and asks him, “Who are you?”, he identifies himself with the body and responds by stating his name. In response to further questions, he introduces himself as a doctor, farmer, student, and so on. When questioned further, he identifies himself by his nationality, such as American, Indian, Pakistani, and so on.
If you examine these answers deeply, you will discover that none of them corresponds to the truth. He received his name from his parents. He did not have it at birth. His identification with one profession or another is incorrect because he is not a profession.
What, then, is the truth about him? “I am the Atma. This is my true Self.” That is the truth.
But people identify themselves with their names, professions, and nationalities and do not base their lives on the Atma. No driver identifies himself with his car. Similarly, the body is the vehicle, and the Atma is the driver. Forgetting his true role as the driver, a person identifies himself with the body, which is merely a means of transportation.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba
- Divine Discourse, August 23, 1995

The body is Shivam (auspicious) as long as the Atma dwells in it; it becomes Shavam (a dead body) as soon as the Atma leaves it.
- Baba

What is the best form of service that we can offer another person? Today Bhagavan explains this to us through a memorable example applicable to all kinds of service we perform.

A king asked many scholars and sages who came to his court, “What service is the best, and when is the best time to render it?” He could not obtain a convincing answer from them.
One day, while pursuing the army of a hostile kingdom, he became separated from his army in a dense jungle; he traveled a long way until, exhausted and hungry, he reached a hermit’s hut. There was an old monk there who kindly welcomed him and offered him a long-awaited cup of cool water.
After resting for a while, the king asked his host the questions that had been troubling his mind: “What is the best service?” The hermit replied, “To give a thirsty person a cup of water.” “And when is the best time to render it?” The answer was: “When he is walking alone from afar, looking for some place where he can obtain it.”
Service should not be judged by the cost or fame it entails; it may be nothing more than the offering of a cup of water deep in the jungle. But the recipient’s need and the attitude of the one offering it determine whether the act will be golden or leaden. - Divine Discourse, May 24, 1967

May no one experience even the slightest suffering as a result of your thoughts, words, or actions.
Make this your Sadhana.

What is the role of Swami’s followers (our purpose in Swami’s mission, translator’s note) in modern society?
Bhagavan lovingly explains this to us today.

Today, the world is torn apart by factions and groups that hate and wage war against one another. Nothing is considered too cruel if it is aimed at destroying the enemy. No one recognizes the inner Unity, the eternal current of Divinity that animates every living being on earth. Your task is to demonstrate that not everything is lost, that there are still people who believe in Truth, Righteousness, Peace, and Love; that acts of loving service performed in a spirit of humility and reverence still make people happy; and that the day when the Brotherhood of Man and the Fatherhood of God will shine brightly and beautifully is dawning and drawing near.
Today, all efforts are directed toward producing more food, building more houses, and manufacturing more clothing.
But what is most important today is to make every effort to encourage people to demonstrate greater tolerance, greater humility, greater brotherhood, and greater compassion, and to gain a deeper awareness of the Source of joy and peace that lies within every heart. Bharata* must be at the forefront of this spiritual campaign. Love will melt even the ice of the harshest hearts.
— Divine Discourse, November 14, 1975

Serve everyone whom God sends your way, humbly, wisely, and with pure love.

You experience the disappearance of this diversity of Prakriti, this multitude of forms, this world woven from illusion, day after day—and yet you still cling to it! That is the tragedy. The moment you fall asleep, where does the whole world go? What becomes of its many faces? What is the source of the joy that sleep, true and deep, gives you?

Sleep preserves the subtlest trace of the ego as a memory of this world, so when you wake up, you are once again the same person, enveloped in illusion and besieged by the products of your absurd fantasies! That is why I so often ask you not to identify Me with this physical body. But you do not understand! You continue to call Me by this Name, thinking that I have only this one, single Form. But understand: there is no Name that is not Mine, and no Form that does not belong to Me!
