You are often dissatisfied that there is so much suffering in the world. Again and again you ask yourself, “How could I have created the world so that it contains so much suffering?”
You misunderstand suffering. First and foremost, suffering is needed so that you may grow. Without suffering there is no growth. People consider the good fortune they find in the outside world to be their friend. They should approach it critically. Too much happiness in the outside world makes a person lazy, selfish, and stupid. Suffering, on the other hand, opens the heart and teaches you humility and reverence.
And one more thing: suffering always appears where there is no love. Whoever suffers needs to learn something. The whole meaning of life is to learn to love. Life has no other meaning.
Love is life, and life is love. Whoever does not love does not live. Suffering is the midwife that brings you into life.
But always keep in mind: let these words help you understand your suffering, but you must not judge others for their suffering. Because judging means not loving—in other words, not living.
