Photographs have almost no effect. But it is still better not to look at them either. What matters here is the event itself. For example, a photo may depict water flowing from a tap. This will not help a traveler who is lost in a hot desert in any way, even if they meditate on the photo.

Some people also watched the atomic explosion in Japan with interest. And they went blind.
Something unusual simply attracts people. That's all.
