Let me explain through my own perspective.
When I was little, a preschooler, our neighbor died, and everyone was crying and grieving deeply. I sincerely couldn’t understand why, because this wasn’t the end. “My Self cannot die,” I thought, seeing myself with inner vision as a pearly-white, luminous being stretched out across eternity, while only within the framework of this life there was the image that I was temporarily standing, as if in a doorway, “in the middle” of eternity. “How can that be? It’s impossible! I cannot die!”

And later, at about 26, I remembered again how I flew into my mother’s womb. The same pearly-white luminous color of me and everything around me: trees, stones, flowers. A feeling of eternal life and boundless joy from unity.
