The “battles” between vegetarians and meat eaters have been going on for a long time. The main argument of steak lovers goes like this: “You absolutely have to eat meat, otherwise where would the body get protein?” The answer to this question is far from what it is commonly believed to be. THE PROTEIN CYCLE “Life is the mode of existence of protein bodies,” Friedrich Engels wrote. The definition is debatable, but it clearly points to the predominantly protein-based structure of the inhabitants of Earth. That is why it is so important to understand the characteristics of protein metabolism.
FIRST FEATURE All proteins, including the proteins in our bodies, consist of 20 amino acids. The individuality of the proteins of a particular organism (a chicken, a grain, a tiger, a human) is determined merely by the sequence and quantity of amino acids. Just as the meaning and other merits of any text are determined by the sequence and number of printed characters.
SECOND FEATURE Protein metabolism consists of breaking down molecules of foreign protein into separate “parts” and building a new, personal one; in other words, it comes down to the “journey” of amino acids.
THIRD FEATURE It is generally believed that the main, if not the only, sources of protein (amino acids) in the human diet are dairy products, eggs, meat, and fish. At the same time, few people think about the fact that the animals whose meat we eat (cows and chickens, pigs and turkeys, sheep and ducks) are not predators. They get their protein from plant food. This means (and this is indeed the case!) that amino acids are present in practically every living organism. For example, 100 g of millet contains 11.5 grams of protein, corn crispbreads contain 8.3 grams, 100 g of yeast-free rye bread contains 5 grams, carrots contain 1.3 grams, white cabbage contains 2.3 grams, and raspberries contain 1 gram. Thus, with every meal we receive, in one way or another, amino acids for building our own cells, hormones, enzymes, and immune proteins.
FOURTH FEATURE Every day, myriads of old cells die (of the liver, blood, kidneys, heart, and other organs and tissues). This is a planned, normal process. And this is spent protein. We build new, young, viable cells to replace them. Every moment, myriads of our hormones and enzymes become waste (worked once—off to the landfill!). And this is protein, too. We synthesize new hormones and enzymes to replace them: life goes on! And every moment, the immune system reacts to foreign invaders that enter the body (viruses, bacteria, fragments of food molecules, dust, smog, the fur of a beloved dog, etc.), producing antibodies, interferons, and much more. And this is protein once again!
Where does this entire mass of spent protein go?! The natural routes of elimination are the kidneys and liver. But a healthy person does not lose protein through the kidneys and intestines.
At the same time, an overload of the blood with “waste” protein leads to natural reactions in the body:
increasing excretion through the kidneys (which leads to increased blood pressure);
removing waste from the blood through “unnatural,” additional routes (excessive sweating, allergic rashes, phlegm, mucus in the nasopharynx, discharge from peptic and trophic ulcers, etc.);
creating storage sites for unnecessary material outside the circulatory system (in the form of excess fatty tissue, chronic skin rashes, pigment spots, etc.).
If the protein waste products of the body and reactive (immune) protein, which forms as a “response” to external circumstances, are not regularly removed, the conditions arise for what is commonly called disease. Therefore, there must be a physiological way to solve this problem.
THE HISTORICAL TRUTH At the end of the 19th century, Ivan Petrovich Razenkov studied at the medical faculty of Kazan University. He devoted his entire life to seeking an answer to a fundamental question of biology: how does a living organism maintain the constancy of its internal environment? He worked in the laboratories of I.P. Pavlov, organized the world’s first scientific society bringing together physiologists, biochemists, and pharmacists, and laid the foundations of medicine for extreme situations...
In 1948, at the opening of a session of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, Academician Razenkov, vice president of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, delivered an address. He made public his discovery in the field of protein metabolism, the product of many years of research. It was a sensation!
Just 1.5 years later, in 1950, at the infamous Pavlov Session of the All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences, he was stripped of all his titles and dismissed from all his positions. In her book “I.P. Razenkov. A Scientific Biography,” Ivan Petrovich’s former postgraduate student, Liya Grigoryevna Okhnyanskaya (who passed away just a few weeks ago), recounted that in those years, during the campaign against cosmopolitanism, he said: “Now we must not do science, but save people.” And that is what he did—he saved his colleagues. But he himself, deprived of the opportunity to continue his work and research for this reason, soon died of a heart attack. He was only 64. Since then, his works have not been published. They gathered dust on the shelves of the library of the Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy, where Razenkov had once headed the Department of Physiology. And in 1994, Anatoly Volkov happened to visit the home of Ivan Petrovich’s grandson as a doctor, where he saw Okhnyanskaya’s book. After that, gaining access to the monographs and articles of the forgotten and unappreciated scientist was simply a “matter of technique.”
So, before you are the main points of the great—if I may use the word—discovery that never made it into medical textbooks and remained unknown to many generations of doctors and researchers.
1. Whatever a person eats—porridge, vegetables, or meat—in the duodenum (immediately after leaving the stomach), the “protein/carbohydrate” ratio is always the same. This ensures a standard composition of the intestinal contents and predictable parameters of substances entering the blood from the intestines, and therefore the constancy of the body’s internal environment.
2. Several times a day, a protein broth seeps into the stomach cavity through the blood vessels surrounding it. It consists of those very protein waste products of vital activity mentioned above. Thanks to this “dumping of waste,” the blood is cleansed, the kidneys and liver are relieved, and the basis for excess weight and disease disappears.
3. Once in the stomach, the “fragments” of spent protein molecules are digested down to amino acids, absorbed from the intestines into the blood, and serve as ideal material for building new cells, hormones, and enzymes. According to I.P. Razenkov, in this way a person who has not eaten a single piece of meat or fish during the day receives an amount of protein equivalent to 600 grams of raw beef!
This is how wisely everything is arranged! The most valuable material in nature, protein, is used repeatedly, in a closed cycle, practically without loss. This is the mechanism by which people live in India and other “vegetarian” countries, where there is not even dairy farming!
But the release into the stomach and reuse of one’s own waste protein is possible only when a person has consumed carbohydrates (porridge, potatoes, bread, pasta, vegetables) without protein. If we put potatoes with meat, rice with fish, or sausage sandwiches into our mouths, the “normal” protein/carbohydrate ratio is already present, and it is impossible to add waste protein from the blood to the contents of the stomach. Therefore, blood purification does not occur. This is the healing meaning of fasting and abstinence!
That is why, taking into account the knowledge obtained by Academician Razenkov, the doctors at Dr. Volkov’s Clinic recommend eating meat and fish only once a day and only in the evening, and going without animal protein altogether every third day.
