It is impossible to make a locomotive move using fire alone; nor will it move under the influence of water alone. Only when fire and water are brought directly together is steam produced, enabling the locomotive to move. Parabrahma Shakti and Parabrahman Himself are interdependent, and both are necessary for creation, just as a potter needs clay and water, and a locomotive needs water and fire to move. Thus, we have grounds for attributing the feminine principle to Prakriti. Prakriti’s consort, who feels tender affection for her, is Parabrahman. Parabrahman is also figuratively described as wearing the covering, the garment of Maya Shakti, or ignorance. Thus, there is only one Purusha, while all creation is represented by the feminine principle. You may have doubts: there are many men sitting here—Purushas—so how can we imagine that the whole world consists only of women and a single Purusha? But you possess only the external form of a Purusha; you are not true Purushas. You do not possess the qualities contained in the word Purusha, and therefore, naturally, cannot be called by this name. You will be able to call yourselves Purushas only when you acquire qualities that raise you above the gunas (qualities) and above all worldly thoughts and ideas. You may doubt again and ask how God, who exists everywhere and therefore also in the gunas, can be above the gunas. All gunas are created and are therefore secondary and illusory. God is present in all created gunas, but the gunas themselves do not exist in God; thus, in describing God as standing above the gunas, we are affirming the truth.

To make this clearer, let us return to the recent example. We said that pots are made from clay and water; thus, clay is present in all pots, but there is not a single pot in the clay. A pot is artificially created, just like the gunas, and clay is concealed within it, but there is no pot in the clay. In the same way, God exists in the artificially created gunas, but the gunas do not exist in God. Therefore, they should be understood as that which binds. They may be regarded as bonds that have tied you. Thus, you are bound and unfree. We are all attached to this artificially created world, but God has no attachments and is eternally free. You may call yourself a Purusha only when you free yourself from all attachments and become free. Without this, it would be wrong to call yourself a Purusha. Within everyone there is an aspect of Purusha, but you do not pay attention to the qualities that would make you a Purusha or enable you to call yourself one. If you wish to become a Purusha, you must be prepared to accept and make your own all the qualities inherent in Him.

When someone becomes hungry, they eat; women and men do the same. In many situations, women and men behave alike, and this means that a man is just as weak as a woman; in this sense, both are weak. A Purusha must be strong, whereas a woman has always been considered weak. Since ancient times, the epithet abala—lacking strength—has accompanied women. To meet the natural demands of this world today and perform various actions on its stage, some of us call ourselves men and others women. These names apply exclusively to worldly life, but on the spiritual, true plane, all people currently possess only feminine qualities. Let me give a small example. During anniversary celebrations at the women’s college in Anantapur, a play is usually performed, generally on a religious theme. Suppose one girl plays Sakkubai and another plays Kashipati; once the curtain falls, however, each is left only with her real name—say, Sudha. In the same way, on the world stage, some call themselves men and others women. This division into men and women is justified and necessary while the action is being played out on the stage of the world; however, men who do not possess the qualities of Purusha should not call themselves by this name.

How can we best live as devotees of the Lord? Bhagawan lovingly reminds us today.

Today, many speeches are given about Truth, Righteousness, Peace, and Love, and various demonstrations are organized to promote these values. But there is no attempt to demonstrate these values in practical life. What is the use of speeches and demonstrations if the values are not practiced? The world cannot be changed through propaganda. Only when there are living examples of these ideals do they become meaningful and inspiring. All the chaos in the world occurs because people lead double lives. They say one thing and act differently. There should be unity in thought, word, and deed. True spirituality consists in fostering the unity of people through harmonious living and the shared joy of all. Bhajans and all forms of worship are merely good actions, but they are not spiritually significant. Devotion consists in expressing love toward everyone. You cannot transform hearts through speeches. They often lead to confusion and conflict. Better than speeches is the practice of love with faith in the Divine.

Divine Discourse, March 24, 1989

Believing in God while ignoring God’s precepts and commandments is a contradiction in terms.

As we approach Bhagawan’s Aradhana Day, how should we reflect on the reality of Divinity and our relationship with Divinity? Bhagawan Himself lovingly guides us today.

Air mixes with air, fire mixes with fire, and water easily mixes with water; likewise, God is pure Light. Become Light yourselves. You will become one with the cosmic Light. God has no form. To merge with the formless God, you must give up identification with the body. When you are constantly attached to the body, how can you realize the Atma, the Cosmic Principle? Concentrate on the Atma. Only then will your consciousness merge with cosmic consciousness. This union is called Sayujya (merging with the Divine). Ekatma Sarvabhutantaratma—the same Atma dwells in all beings. There is only One, but different names and forms are attributed to it. There is only One. A zero gains value when preceded by one. The world, life, the sun, the moon, the sky, and everything else are zeros. Only the One is the true hero, and that is Divinity. A person who is essentially Divine becomes a zero if he forgets God. Embodiments of Love! God is not separate from you. You are God. Reflect deeply and realize this truth. If your entire life is spent in research and experiments, when will you put this knowledge into practice? People may have different names, appearances, and attitudes toward life, but the Atma remains unchanged.

Divine Discourse, November 23, 1998

What limitations can there be for the One who has no form? God can assume any form and may have any gunas, and He can perform any action He wishes for the welfare of the world.

How should our love for God manifest in everyday life? Bhagawan graciously explains this to us today.

Love is vitally important. Love is divine. For an action to be worthy of being offered to God and pure enough to earn His grace, it must radiate love. The brighter the manifestation of love, the closer you are to God. Love is not influenced or altered by considerations of caste, creed, or religion; nor can it be tainted by envy, malice, or hatred. Keep Love from being poisoned by these evils; strive to cultivate feelings free from hatred and division. The root of all religions, the essence of all scriptures, the meeting place of all paths, and the inspiration of all people is the principle of love. It is the strongest foundation for humanity’s mission in Life. It is the light that ensures world peace and universal prosperity. Fill every word and action of yours with love. The words that fall from your tongue should not pierce like a knife, wound like an arrow, or strike like a hammer. They should be a foundation of sweet nectar, wise counsel, and a gentle path strewn with flowers; they should pour forth peace and joy.
Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Bhakta: Swami! Last month you promised that you would explain to me what the “I” is. If I understand this as well, I will be able to get rid of the small illusions I still have, meditate on you, and be happy. What better destiny could I seek?

Swami: Well, my boy! It is very easy to speak about the true nature of the “I,” but until it is experienced, complete satisfaction is impossible. I need some time to explain it fully enough for you to understand. This month I am short of time, although it is scheduled literally down to the minute. I use all my time solely for the ananda of the bhaktas; I have no personal time at all. My selfish goal is to be useful to my bhaktas. Last month I visited Nellore, Gudur, Venkatagiri, and the surrounding villages. Then I went to Bangalore. I used the little time at my disposal for “Premavahini.” This month I visited Hyderabad, Rajahmundry, Samalkot, Chebrolu, Nuzvid, and other cities. So there is absolutely no free time. Next month I will tell you who “you” are—to your complete satisfaction. For now, try to grasp the meaning of this folk-dance-style song; then you will understand to a considerable extent what “you” are. Perhaps, thanks to it, you will attain vairagya to some degree. Then you will understand more clearly the meaning of what I want to say. Do not merely listen to this song, but carefully Think about the meaning of every word. This song will surely turn your consciousness upside down. “Listen carefully!”

1. Tai! Tai! Tai! Tai! Tai! Hey, doll, take a look at Tamashi’s performance (tamas, the guna of ignorance), featuring this marionette! O jiva, listen to the long, long tale of its past and future, of what was and what will be.

2. At first, it writhed in the unstable dampness of its mother’s womb, its prison. It came into this world crying, but everyone around it smiled joyfully and celebrated its birth.

3. “Oh, woe is me! I have been born again!”—it realized and cried, long and loudly. Meanwhile, everyone caressed it and laughed so that it would laugh in return!

4. It spent whole days wallowing in its own excrement, unaware of shame; it got up and fell at every step, playing its childish games.

5. There it goes, running and jumping with its friends, learning hundreds of pranks and tricks; thus it grows taller and broader, becoming stronger and more beautiful year by year.

6. Now it is walking arm in arm with another marionette, enticing and cooing in the style of the pink rainbow; it sings a melody never heard before and eagerly drains its own cup, unique and wondrous.

7. This is Brahma—the one who pairs these dolls. And there are millions of dolls! But our marionette does not know this as it plays its role in the performance together with the other dolls: Tim! Tim! Tim!

8. This doll of maya has, like a sacred bull, a rope of tamas threaded through its nostril; Lust and malice are scourges with iron spikes that strike this slave across the back.

9. She takes malicious pleasure when others stand before her, trembling with humiliation; she causes them suffering, yet cannot endure even the slightest pain herself!

10. She curses and screams, waves her arms, becomes irritated and angry, her eyes blood-red; it is truly a remarkable sight when she is possessed by the demon of rage!

11. She studies and reads syllable by syllable, scribbles and crams something, though she herself does not know why; she rushes about in panic, forced to gather food for her belly.

12. Ah, have you seen how this ridiculous little puppet, green with envy, spins and writhes after swallowing so many books when she meets a more learned doll?

13. You should hear her secret clucking when, hiding away, she sins, satisfying her shameful desire, her disgraceful lust.

14. She boasts proudly—but of what? Of herself! Of her beauty, strength, and vigor, while all the time, step by step, she moves toward old age.

15. She sways and blinks through her wrinkles; and when the children shout, “old monkey,” “old monkey!”—she opens wide and bares her toothless mouth, while her bones creak so loudly!

16. At last she dies in fear, worn-out, tattered, and utterly bedraggled! What good is it, O rag doll, to sigh and groan? Now all your troubles have come to an end.

17. Aha! A bird! She flaps her wings! She flies out—whoosh—from her cells—from the bodily sheath which, emptied, shrivels and contracts, freed; oh, remove it from sight: now it swells and reeks.

18. The elements unite with the five elements that gave them birth; the puppets’ desires are dust and ashes; why then do you weep, fools, when one of you falls upon the crowded stage?

19. Brothers and sisters, parents and friends—all hold on to one another only while the door to the room remains closed. The puppet of maya, alas, has forgotten its kinship, the Divine Name, the truth of the Savior!

20. O jiva, do not lean on this fragile reed; just blow, and this frail leather boat, endowed with three times three leaks, will plunge you into the torrent’s rapids!

21. This marionette cries, falls asleep, and awakens when the strings are pulled by an invisible hand. It is the Lord who stands behind it all, but the puppet blasphemes: “I, I, I!”

22. Dharma, karma—these are strong strings that He tightens and loosens in turn. Unaware of this, the marionette boasts, attached to the crossbar.

23. It considers the world stable—this foolish, self-important puppet! But then the light comes on. The performance is over! Arrogance and pride leave the stage!

24. O jiva, you make your way into an ant, a snake, and a bird; you search for and surely find the path to ultimate bliss!

25. Bless your fate! Now you can behold Sai Krishna; He has appeared before you! Merge with Him, and you will learn the answers to all your “what?” questions,“Why?” and “How?”.

26. A million words, so clever and beautiful—can they smooth your hungry grimace? Light the lamp of the soul instead of words, stop racing and, freed from your bonds, rejoice.

27. This song, which told the story of a rag doll, will sadden the jiva and make it reflect, I know. But, jiva! Look upon the grandeur of the lilas of Sathya Sai Nath and... know yourself!

Bhakta: Ah! I understand! I clearly understand that “I” is not the body, buddhi, manas, or chitta. If I am not these “I’s,” only atma remains. Then “I” is Paramatma, and thus everything is Paramatma! I understand everything! Believing out of ignorance that “I” is the body and this mind, deha and buddhi, we experience every hardship. Indeed, that is so. Everything you have spoken about passes through us one after another, like beads on a string! Oh! Really? Really! It is enough to listen to just this one song for the mind to turn toward vairagya, just as you said... Swami! I felt very disappointed when you first said that you had no time to spare for me. But that was only because of my ignorance. For I knew that our swami could not disappoint anyone or leave anyone in anxiety; I feel that you have now bestowed upon me even more ananda than I had hoped for. How can one measure your kindness! They say of you: “Swami can be moved by a single tear!” They also say that our suffering is unbearable for swami; now I have received proof of the truth of these words.May I leave now?

Swami: Very good. Go, and come again. I truly have no more time now. I still need to see and bid farewell to those who are returning home.

Why should we care about the purity of our hearts? When we celebrate the chariot festival Rathotsavam, Bhagavan reminds us what kind of real chariot He wants us to keep ready for Him.

When we invite an eminent person, saint, or scholar into our home, we need to prepare the house so that it looks worthy. We must clean the house and the surrounding area. Great people will not visit a home if it is disorderly and lacking in sanctity. Similarly, if we invited a minister or governor to our village, we would clear the roads, decorate the approaches, and put everything in order to welcome the honored guest. If we show so much care and attention when inviting a person holding a temporary position, then imagine how much purer our hearts must be when we invite the Creator and Protector of the world Himself to enter them. Only when we purify our hearts can God enter them. Krishna said: "Arjuna, you take Me as the charioteer of your chariot. Take Me as the charioteer of your life. The seat on which I sit in this chariot is very pure and beautifully decorated. But just think how pure and magnificent your heart must be to make it a place for Me when I become the charioteer of your heart." — Divine Discourse, September 12, 1984.

You should strive to enshrine God in the temple of your heart.

— BABA

Arjuna:
"That day I understood that not a single event, not even the most insignificant one, can take place unless it is Vasudeva’s will.
I became completely convinced of this.
He is the Sutra-dhari, the One who holds the strings that set the puppets in motion and make them play their parts, while He Himself sits among the spectators and pretends to know nothing about the plot of the story or the distribution of roles.
The actors cannot deviate even a step from His instructions.
His Will guides and determines every movement, every gesture. The events and emotions played out on the stage affect the hearts of the spectators, but cause not the slightest disturbance in the heart of the Sutra-dhari.
He decides that one person should say this and another should do that, and prompts them with the appropriate words and actions.
...Every drop of blood flowing through these veins is merely a drop of His Grace. Every muscle is a particle of His Love; every bone, every bit of cartilage is part of His Grace. Unable to understand this secret, we proudly declared: "I have achieved this," "I have done that."
Now it has become clear to us that without Him we are merely bags of bones.
And, of course, in this respect, the destiny of all people is the same. They forget that the All-directing, All-knowing, and All-powerful One plays with them as with puppets.
They believe that they themselves are the true doers and enjoyers. Like me, they are mired in ignorance and unaware of this fundamental truth.
If we, renowned heroes and warriors, are in such a lamentable state, what can be said of ordinary people who have no opportunity to awaken to this knowledge?"

Do anything while feeling like an actor on a stage; watch yourself and your role from the outside, detached. Remember that all this is merely a play, that the Lord has given you a role—play it properly; it is your main duty! He staged the play, and He watches it with delight.

Spiritual progress and bliss depend on disciplined effort. They can be attained only through difficult and persistent practice, not through pleasant activities. Life becomes truly worthwhile only when a person has discipline, concentration of mind, renunciation of sensual pleasures, and faith in the Atma (Higher Self). Discipline and concentration are like embankments that control and channel a river’s floodwaters into safe and fruitful courses. You are engaged in sadhana and the investigation of the Higher Self, and in this great task these two factors will be of immense help to you. One who does not know the way cannot reach the goal; and one who does not know the goal cannot choose the right path and follow it. It is necessary to have a correct understanding of the path as well as its goal before setting out on a journey.

All beings and all things are Divine—but through rational analysis, you must choose the beings and things that help you, and avoid those that will hinder you. This is the path of wisdom. Consider electricity, fire, or a sharp knife. They are dangerous if you do not know how to use them; they are useful if you know how to handle them with care. They can be either friends or enemies. The same applies to the senses. If we allow them to control us, they become our deadly enemies; if we master them, they help us realize our goal. A person must master the senses, which draw their attention toward the external World. A person cannot free themselves from bondage to the wheel of duality (pleasure and pain, joy and sorrow, etc.) while being guided by the senses. The senses are obstacles on the path of the Spirit, which leads you to inner Consciousness rather than to the external world. Birds and animals are not troubled by the call of the Spirit, but human beings are! By God’s Grace, they have been endowed with this great gift of discrimination!

SWAMI ON ATTAINING LIBERATION...

🙏🏻
HISLOP: Must a certain amount of time pass before one attains liberation?

🧡
SAI: The time required for liberation can be compared to the following situation. For example, you are asked: "How much time do you need to eat?" The answer might be: "From 5 minutes to half an hour." That is the wrong answer. Eating takes exactly as long as is needed to fill the stomach.

🙏🏻
HISLOP: Is there a natural desire for liberation in a person?

🧡
SAI: Sadhana does not bring liberation. It only calms and controls the rajasic and tamasic gunas. The sattvic guna always carries the desire for liberation. When the sattvic guna governs a person, liberation comes.

🙏🏻
HISLOP: In the West, sadhana is usually regarded as a process of self-improvement. But does this imply identifying oneself with a changing personality?

🧡
SAI: At first, it may be an aspiration toward self-improvement. A person may see that their moral nature and character require improvement. But the next stage is a deep and comprehensive investigation or analysis (inquiry) of the reality of certain things. Seven-tenths of sadhana is analysis. The word "I" that people commonly use refers to the body.

🙏🏻
HISLOP: According to Mahayana Buddhism, even at the last moment before final liberation, a person can make a choice: to dissolve completely or accept a new incarnation.

🧡
SAI: The choice between complete dissolution and being born again after attaining liberation depends on desire. There is no selfishness in the desire to dissolve into God. This is not a limitation but an expansion.

"We must remember: silence sets things in motion, while the word gives the impulse to move. Silence compels, while the word exhorts. The greatest actions in the world are performed in profound silence, merely veiled by tiresome noise and the deceitful surface of sound. Great exertions take place while the breath is held; the more rapid the breathing, the greater the expenditure of energy. Whoever can hold their breath while acting is already the master of the world's energy—the energy that acts and creates in the universe.
There are two kinds of silence. The helpless silence of inertia, which signifies disintegration, and the silence of power, which governs the harmony of life. The silence of power is characteristic of a ruler's calm. The more perfect it is, the deeper the might and the greater the power of action.
In this silence, true wisdom descends."
Nicholas Konstantinovich Roerich.

We all wish for happiness and peace. How can we attain them? Today, Bhagavan graciously explains this to us.

The Telugu equivalent of the English word “happy” is “santosham.” Let us consider the meaning of the expression “san-tosham.” “Tosham” means “prasan(n)ata,” that is, joy and delight. The prefix “sam” denotes joy attained through righteous and elevated means, through detachment and self-sacrifice. One should give up desires that merely enslave and imprison us, bringing sorrow. Desires can be grouped into two categories: 1) the desire to obtain an object or experience that no one else has; 2) the desire that the object or experience one has acquired should not become available to anyone else! Both these kinds of desires are truly laughable. That which we desire is illusory, like a shadow! The faster you rush toward what you desire, hoping to possess it, the farther it moves away from you! When you pursue a desire, it eludes you; but when you ignore it, it submits to you, like a shadow that follows you when you turn your back on it. Desires are born of greed. As greed weakens, discontent fades to the same extent. And when discontent disappears, joy takes root.

What can we do together to eliminate fear and anxiety in today’s world? Bhagavan firmly and lovingly explains to us how we can change the situation.

The world can be saved only by the power of the Atma inherent in everyone, which must be activated through individual sadhana, and by the grace of God, which can be attained only through love, purity, and service. If these two components are absent, devastation is inevitable; it cannot be avoided. Love is the rarest value today! There is no love in the home, between father and son, husband and wife, or between brothers. You must prove through your conduct and attitude that love, based on awareness of the One Atma in all, can solve all the problems of the world. Life has become artificial. People are wandering in blind fear, not knowing what the next step will bring. Prepare yourselves to be lamps guiding them onto the right path. Be lamps of love. Everything is contained in it. Then there is no need for japa or tapas. Love and loving service to others (which are forms assumed by the Divine) will ensure God’s grace for you. Therefore, today resolve to root love in your hearts, cultivate it, make it universal, and free it from selfish desires. Become Premaswarupas (embodiments of love). — Divine Discourse, November 20, 1970

I have come to light the lamp of love in your hearts, so that it may shine more brightly with each passing day!

The foremost commandment of the Buddha’s teaching is nonviolence—the highest form of righteousness—and the Buddha vigorously and ardently preached it.

After many years of research, He realized that spiritual vision does not come from books, but only through control over the senses.
The Buddha urged people to sanctify their vision and their hearing. He said: “The ability to see holiness in everything is a necessary condition for a happy life. Develop the habit of looking at what is good, hearing what is good, and doing what is good.”
The Buddha believed that everything in this world should be sacred and pure. If you throw a stone into a pond, ripples spread all the way to its edges. Similarly, if you throw the “stone” of a good thought into the “pond” of the heart, waves from it spread throughout the body. The wave that reaches the eyes purifies the vision; the one that reaches the ears attunes hearing to perceive only sacred sounds; the wave that reaches the hands impels them to good actions.
When waves of pure thoughts spread throughout the body, it acts in a single sacred impulse. Therefore, good and luminous thoughts are the guarantee of the holiness of actions.
When thoughts are focused on God, the senses, speech, hearing, and actions are sanctified. This leads to purity of the organs of perception. Purity in thought, word, and deed is necessary for realizing the Divine.
This threefold purity is considered the essence of humanity. The Buddha realized this truth and experienced happiness.

Sathya Sai Baba.

What prevents us most from living in love and peace? Bhagavan lovingly draws our attention to the dual evil that obstructs our happiness.

Having conquered desires, you become selfless. When you are overwhelmed by desires, you cannot experience contentment. Intoxicated by insatiable desires, you lose control over your senses. Undoubtedly, it is impossible to avoid desires, but they must be kept within limits! Boundless desires lead to ruin. Prosperity eludes such a person. As soon as a person learns to control their desires, everything will begin to come to them on its own! Lobham hitva sukhi bhavati — conquer greed and you will attain happiness. Greed is another cause of human misery. Greed alienates you from every kind of happiness—material, intellectual, and spiritual! Greed was the reason Duryodhana and Dushasana could not experience happiness in life, although they possessed great wealth and power. Therefore, you should drive greed from your hearts. How can this be done? If you cultivate the spirit of sacrifice within yourself, greed will disappear! There is no room for joy in hearts filled with greed. You cannot fill a glass full of water with milk. First empty the glass, and then fill it with milk! In the same way, you need to rid yourself of greed and fill your heart with the spirit of sacrifice!

What is the essence of Lord Buddha’s teachings? On the sacred occasion of Buddha Purnima, Bhagavan lovingly gives us guidance today.

You should strive to attain Nirvana, or Liberation. Nirvana means experiencing bliss in the final moments of life. But people do not understand what they should strive for and what they should reject. Three things must be accomplished in life. Do good to those who have harmed you. Forget the harm caused by others, as well as the good you have done. Forget what should be forgotten, and remember only what should be remembered. What should you remember? The good that others have done for you! You should remember the kindness shown to you by others as something sacred and express your gratitude to them. Let all your actions be based on righteousness. Whatever actions you perform while remembering God will be sanctified! Do not look at what is evil; look at what is good. Do not listen to what is bad; listen to what is good. Do not speak what is bad; speak what is good. Do not think about what is bad; think about what is good. Do not do evil; do what is good. This is the path to God. This is the essence of Buddha’s teachings.
- Divine Discourse, May 11, 1998

Buddha prescribed five kinds of duty: see good, think good, listen to good, speak good, and do good. These five duties constitute true sadhana!

Creation implies bringing matter together; that which is united must, in time, break apart and be released. Man is created, and then dissolution and death will follow. Thus, some are born happy, while others live healthy, prosperous lives. Some are born unhappy, while others are born without arms or legs. Some are born feeble-minded or impaired. Who caused them pain or maimed them? God is proclaimed to be just and good. How can such a God be so partial and biased? How can such radically different treatment arise in the kingdom of God? Such doubts are quite natural. The vision of the sages of India, who shaped the thinking of this country, revealed to them that God is not the cause of these differences; they are the consequences of actions performed by an individual in lives preceding the present one. They lead to happiness and suffering, health and hardship. Good and evil are created by the person himself and are the consequences of what was done in previous lives.

What does the practice of the virtue of nonviolence really mean? Today, Bhagavan clearly and lovingly clarifies this question for us.

Rid yourselves of your bad qualities, wicked thoughts, and unkind intentions. Practice nonviolence (ahimsa). What is the meaning of nonviolence? Ahimsa means not harming others through your thoughts, words, or actions. Do not deviate even for a moment from the unity of thought, word, and deed. Only when you maintain unity of thought, word, and deed in all your undertakings can divine feelings manifest within you. The principle of nonviolence is particularly subtle. Most people do not understand its true meaning. Even eating more food than necessary constitutes violence. Why? By overeating, you harm yourself. Excessive talking is also considered violence. Speak only as much as necessary. This is nonviolence. When you misuse the abilities God has given you, all your wealth, power, and status lose their meaning. Mired in the swamp of petty worldly activities, you cannot realize the infinite Atmic Principle.
- Divine Discourse, July 29, 1996

If you repay evil with evil, how can you call yourself a good person? Only by responding to evil with goodness can you attain a higher state.

PEACE CAN BE ATTAINED ONLY BY FOLLOWING THE DIFFICULT PATH

Sometimes I behave as if I am keeping you at a distance. This is in order to change you more quickly.
If a section of the road is being repaired, I take a detour and do not use it for some time. The purpose of this is to allow the repair workers to begin their work more quickly, so that I can use the road again.
I have come to set the world right, and therefore I must gather all those who are ill and treat them in My “Hospital,” restore their sound minds, strength, and wisdom, and then send them back to the station on life’s journey from which they came.
I must strengthen your Bhakti, reinforce your faith, and rebuild the foundation of your morality so that you can withstand temptations with greater confidence.
I meet people who constantly recite prayers and believe that, thanks to their prayers, the world is drawing closer to True Peace.
But Peace can be attained only by a difficult path—by eliminating violence and greed from the human heart.
