Sri Ramana Maharshi — the great saint from Tiruvannamalai

On April 14, 1950, an unusual event took place in Puttaparthi.

Sri Varadu, a devotee, reports:

"On the night when Sri Ramana Maharshi passed away in Tiruvannamalai, Baba entered a trance at around nine o’clock in the evening. He entered the trance completely unexpectedly and seemed about to fall.
Another devotee, Sri Krishna, and I reached out our hands to support Him.
Baba was lying in our arms when suddenly His body rose into the air from our hands. He was stiff as a board and muttered: ‘Maharshi has attained Me.’ Later, the sole of His right foot split open, and about two kilograms of sweet-smelling vibhuti flowed from it. While we were collecting the vibhuti, Baba continued to levitate.
After some time, He descended and returned to His normal appearance.
He then told us that Sri Ramana Maharshi had merged into Him. The news of Sri Ramana Maharshi’s samadhi appeared in the newspapers the following day. The same time was mentioned as that of Baba’s trance."

The Lord said:
"He who acts in My Name and for whom I am the supreme goal, who is devoted to Me and attached to nothing, who harbors no ill will toward any being,
will quickly come to Me.
He who knows of My divine manifestations and deeds will not be born again.
He will see Me everywhere: the Imperishable among the perishable, dwelling in all beings.
He will not lose Me, nor will I lose him.
I Myself will bear the burden of those who constantly keep Me in their minds and who unwaveringly serve Me with Love.
To them I grant everything they need.
Speaking with one another about Me, these people experience Happiness and joy.
Out of compassion for them, I strengthen their power of discernment and, with the fire of Wisdom, destroy the darkness of ignorance obscuring their vision.
By controlling their senses, they attain supreme Knowledge. Freed from evil, they attain supreme Happiness.
Rising above the world of death and destruction, they attain immortality."

Sathya Sai Baba,
"Sathya Sai Gita."

THIS WILL NOT LAST FOREVER.

The senses are swindlers and scoundrels; they make you believe that you are the upadhi (body, covering). Restrain them as one restrains a bull by putting a ring through its nostrils, as one tames a horse with a bridle, and an elephant with a goad. When the Pandavas wandered through the Himalayas at the end of their lives, Dharmaraja still felt mental unrest and therefore asked Krishna to spend a little more time with them. As He was leaving their dwelling, Krishna left Dharmaraja a note, which he was to read whenever he felt joy or sorrow. The note said: “Eppudo undatu” (This will not last forever). This is one of the methods by which the mind’s unrest is calmed.

"Courage is necessary for everyone now, for truly, the madness of the world has reached its peak."
Helena Ivanovna Roerich
... if courage is lost, then everything is lost, for only courage nourishes the spark of the spirit within us. Without courage, there is no spirituality. It is not without reason that everywhere, in all Teachings and in the words of Christ, courage was placed at the foundation.
Vol. 3, §55

It takes great courage and strength of spirit to find within oneself the resolve to abandon all kinds of preconceived notions and prejudices and command oneself to understand that the New World is entering life.
Vol. 8, §184

Thus, show courage, knowing and remembering that Wise Guidance and Help will never abandon a heart burning with love for the common good, for work, and for higher knowledge.
Vol. 8, §215

Courage is necessary for everyone now, for truly, the madness of the world has reached its peak.
Vol. 6, §12

Alexander took captive ten gymnosophists, among those who had made particular efforts to persuade Sabbas to betray him and had caused the Macedonians considerable harm. To these men, who were known for their ability to give brief and pointed answers, Alexander put several difficult questions, declaring that he would kill first whoever gave the wrong answer, and then all the others in turn. He ordered the eldest to act as judge. The first gymnosophist, when asked who were more numerous, the living or the dead, answered that it was the living, since the dead no longer existed. The second gymnosophist, when asked whether the earth or the sea nurtured larger animals, answered that it was the earth, since the sea was only a part of the earth. Alexander asked the third which animal was the most cunning, and he replied that the most cunning was the animal that humans had not yet discovered. The fourth, when asked what had motivated him to urge Sabbas to betray him, answered that he wanted Sabbas either to live nobly or to die nobly. The fifth was asked which had come first, day or night, and he answered that day had come one day earlier; then, noticing the king's surprise, he added that whoever asks intricate questions will inevitably receive intricate answers. Turning to the sixth, Alexander asked him how a person should behave in order to be loved more than anyone else, and he answered that the person most deserving of love was one who, though the most powerful, inspired no fear. Of the three remaining men, one was asked how a person could become a god, and the sophist answered that a person would become a god by doing something impossible for a human being to do. Another was asked what was stronger, life or death, and the sophist said that life was stronger, since it was capable of enduring such great hardships. Alexander asked the last sophist how long a person should live, and he answered that one should live until one considered it better to die than to live. Then the king turned to the judge and ordered him to pronounce the sentence. When the judge said that each had answered worse than the one before him, the king exclaimed: “Since you have reached such a verdict, you shall die first.” To this the sophist objected: “But then you will prove to be a liar, O king, for you said that you would first kill the one who gave the worst answer.”
(Chapter 64, “Parallel Lives. Alexander.” Plutarch)

Alexander the Great Meets the “Gymnosophists”—this is what Yogis were called in Ancient Greece. One version is that they were Digambaras (literally, dressed in the “directions of the compass,” that is, completely naked), a large and influential group of ascetic Yogis, followers of Jainism

Throughout this year, I will remind you again and again to repeat the name of God.
In this, that is, the Kali age, this is the best way to manifest God, that is, to be liberated from birth and death.
When you repeat the name of God, your thoughts, feelings, aspirations, and desires are directed toward God.
You will think of God and become God. You will feel God, and your feelings will become love, your desire—compassion.
Moreover, having the name of God on your lips destroys mountains of negative karma.
With the name of God on your lips, you become the creator of your destiny: nothing negative can cling to you because you think good thoughts, see good things, listen to good things, and do good things.
And how should you repeat this name?
Choose whichever form of God is especially meaningful and close to you, and say the word OM before the corresponding name of God.
OM is the primordial sound from which everything arose, and which therefore connects you with everything—and most of all with God.
If, for example, you have chosen Jesus Christ, repeat: "OM Jesus Christ," inhaling "OM" and exhaling "Jesus Christ."
To strengthen this meditation, place an image before you and inwardly connect the name of God with this image.
If you have chosen a particular name, hold firmly to that choice. Never change it. Changing it will plunge you into confusion and lead nowhere.
Hold firmly to the name you once chose. Savor its sweetness and allow Him to guide you.
Everything else is His task.
Believe firmly in this, and you will be free.
From the very beginning.
Sathya Sai Baba

Within every person lie numerous abilities awaiting discovery and use, as well as many talents yet to be revealed.

From time to time, you experience a strong desire to love all beings, to share your joy and sorrow, to learn more and satisfy your intellect, and also to comprehend the secrets of Nature. You are good at gathering information about what is happening in every corner of the world. But do you know what is happening in your mind?

Do you know the answer to the simple question: “Who am I?” Why do you not feel an urgent need to find the answer to this extremely important question? How can you, without knowing the answer, rashly judge and criticize others?

Sincerely ask yourself: “Who am I?” and find the answer within yourself. The Sacred Scriptures will help you in this. They will lead you along the Path, where you yourself can find the answer to this very important question!

An ancient legend tells:
“Once, a girl of about fifteen walked past a group of elders who were sitting together. She politely greeted them, and in response the gray-bearded old men solemnly nodded their heads. One of them, the elder Zhabagi, stood up as a sign of respect for her, which puzzled the others, who understood that such a respected elder should not have stood before a girl.
Noticing this, the elder explained: “I was not greeting merely a girl; I see in her face a future mother, the guardian of the family hearth, upon whom it will depend what kind of offspring will come from her home and what place they will occupy in our society. And how she will run her household and raise her children depends on how we treat her.”

In the Caucasus, they say:
“When a man goes bad, the family goes bad; when a woman goes bad, the whole nation goes bad.”
And one cannot disagree with this, since upbringing as a whole depends on the woman. Future presidents and scientists, thinkers and writers—in fact, all people—are first led into this world by a woman.
The first great height a child should experience in childhood is love for his mother. Through her, he learns to love others, to feel and understand the world.

Incarnation of the Universal Absolute on Earth

“This human form of Mine embodies all the dharmas (faiths) and divine powers (shaktis) of all the gods. Without a doubt, all of them. If you install this divine form—Me—on the throne of your heart with unwavering faith, you will be able to catch a momentary glimpse of My stainless Universal Form. I will prove that every form and every attribute cherished and worshipped by people as belonging exclusively to God belongs to Sai’s form.” — Sathya Sai Baba

Swami Karunyananda spent several years with Ramana Maharshi at Arunachalam. He also spent several years with Malayala Swami at Gogarbham near Tirupati. In 1927, he was initiated into sannyasa (renunciation) by Swami Sivananda in Rishikesh. He engaged in many spiritual practices. Later, he founded the Gotami Jeeva Karunya Sangham in Rajahmundry, on the banks of the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh, and rendered extensive service to the poor and needy. As a result of his spiritual accomplishments and service to humanity, he was blessed with the good fortune of living near Sri Sathya Sai.

Once, Sri Sathya Sai Baba asked Karunyananda to come and spend the night in His room. But because of his terrible habit of snoring, he hesitated to accept Baba’s invitation. Swami asked him not to worry about it, but to come and sleep in His room.

From then on, Karunyananda insisted: “Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai does not sleep. He lies on the bed on his left side. His eyes are always half-open. He is fully aware of what is happening around Him.” Baba bestowed an unforgettable experience upon Karunyananda that night. Swami lay on the bed. Karunyananda spread his bedding on the floor and went to sleep. After some time, he awoke, sat up, and looked at Swami’s bed. To his astonishment, Bala Krishna (child Krishna) was lying on Swami’s bed in Swami’s place, radiating a captivating bluish glow. Karunyananda absorbed the wondrous vision in amazement. Not believing it, he rubbed his eyes and looked carefully again. He also made sure that he was completely awake and that his senses were functioning. There was no doubt. It was definitely Bala Krishna lying on Swami’s bed. A few moments later, Swami was once again lying on the bed in Bala Krishna’s place!

Karunyananda later stated: “What I saw was certainly not a mirage. I was completely awake. It was definitely Bala Krishna. I also observed Bala Krishna transforming into Sri Sathya Sai. Bhagavan Sathya Sai does not display His divinity publicly. Perhaps He feels that such demonstrations could lead uncontrollable crowds of seekers from everywhere to Him.”

Once, at Sai Shruti, Swami’s residence in Kodaikanal, Baba was speaking with His students and revealed a divine secret. He said: “Lord Sriman Narayana has descended to this earth in human form as Sathya Sai. Please understand and accept this fact. Like Lord Sri Rama and Lord Sri Krishna, this is a Purna Avatar (the complete descent of divine consciousness). Divya Shakti has sent great sages and spiritual teachers here from time to time. But now you are witnessing the very incarnation of the Universal Absolute on earth.”

Pure love is like a well-paved one-way road with no speed limits.

You can race along it toward God at any speed. Rivers demonstrate this principle as well. All rivers flow down from the mountains. They rush swiftly in a certain direction. Which direction? Toward the ocean. Along the way, they go around boulders and rock formations, skillfully overcoming the obstacles in their path. They flow without stopping, moving toward their goal.

Life should likewise be like a river rushing toward the ocean called God. The flow must never stop or be interrupted. Overcoming all obstacles along the way, you must continue moving toward God. This should be the main component of your spiritual journey.

Have willpower and remain unwavering, determined, and sincere. Do not give weakness any room. If your vision, hearing, thoughts, feelings, and actions are righteous, you will experience nothing but bliss.

“Every obstacle is a step leading to Bliss, which cannot be destroyed or taken away.”

Sri Sathya Sai Baba

If you become angry even once, the energy you have gained from the food consumed over the course of three months will be destroyed. What is more, it will also make your blood boil, and it will take almost three months for it to cool down. Imagine what your fate will be if you lose your temper again and again.

How can we make our lives peaceful and serene? Bhagavan lovingly reminds us today with some very vivid examples!

Wisdom is the blossoming of purity of mind. Only such a person can attain control over the senses. A person who has self-control, by discovering their divine nature, can illumine the world around them. Just as incense spreads its fragrance in all directions, the name and fame of pure-hearted, self-realized individuals reach everyone. Pure thoughts are the key to purity of mind. If a person is holding a fragrant flower, the aroma of that flower will travel with them wherever they go. In exactly the same way, they may carry an unpleasant smell wherever they go. The same is true of good and bad thoughts. They radiate their good or bad vibrations around them. Thoughts possess such power that, when directed toward great goals, they can be used to influence the world. When the mind is filled with good thoughts such as truth, love, patience and compassion, a person’s life is filled with peace and serenity. If, on the other hand, a person allows thoughts of hatred, envy, anger and vanity to grow, life becomes an endless misery!
Divine Discourse, July 31, 1986

A person with a pure mind is filled with pure thoughts; they sparkle with the energy that flows from pure love.
— BABA ‍

“No one comes for Me” — Shirdi Baba

Baba continued: “In the same way, thousands of devotees come to Me. Do all of them become good devotees? Many drop away halfway. Some come so that their desires may be fulfilled. Some seek wealth. Many come for education, or because of work, marriage, or other personal desires. Each of them has one shortcoming or another. No one comes for Me. I can give the greatest jewel from My treasury. But no one seeks it. That is why I test them (the coins). Some of them are worn out, others have lost their value, and still others are bent and useless.

Just as I test these coins, I test the shortcomings in the devotees who come to Me. I try to reveal these shortcomings in people and find out whether, with these shortcomings, they can truly realize My Truth. They strive toward Me, yet all their desires concern worldly objects. How can they attain Me with such an attitude? How can you arrive at your destination if you board a train going in the opposite direction? They want Me, but make no effort to attain Me. Among those who come to Me, only one in a thousand makes even some effort to understand Me.

The minds of so-called devotees are turned in other directions. If their desires are fulfilled, they praise Me. But as soon as some desire is not fulfilled, they go so far as to abuse Me. Even when they try to understand Me, they are full of doubts from head to toe. Some even leave Me when their worldly desires are not fulfilled. These are not sincere devotees at all. They are the worst of sinners. How can they attain Me?” Baba said.

In This Birch Grove…

In this birch grove,
Far from suffering and woes,
Where the rosy,
Unblinking morning light trembles,
Where leaves pour
Like a transparent avalanche from the high branches—
Sing to me, oriole, your desolate song,
The song of my life.

Having flown over the clearing
And seen people from above,
You chose a wooden,
Unassuming little pipe,
So that in the freshness of morning,
Having visited human habitation,
You might greet my morning
With a chaste, humble matins.

But in life we are soldiers,
And already at the limits of the mind,
Atoms shudder,
Whipping up houses in a white whirlwind.
Like mad windmills,
Wars wave their wings around us.
Where are you, oriole, hermit of the forest?
Why have you fallen silent, my friend?

Surrounded by explosions,
Over the river where the reeds grow black,
You fly over the cliffs,
You fly over the ruins of death.
Silent wanderer,
You see me off to battle,
And a deadly cloud trails
Above your head.

Beyond the great rivers,
The sun will rise, and in the morning mist,
With scorched eyelids,
I, slain, will sink to the earth.
Having cried out like a mad raven,
The machine gun will fall silent, trembling.
And then, in my torn-apart heart,
Your voice will sing.

And above the birch grove,
Above my birch grove,
Where leaves pour
Like a rosy avalanche from the high branches,
Where beneath a divine drop
A piece of a flower grows cold—
The solemn dawn of victory
Will rise for ages.

Do not make yourself small.
Do not make anyone responsible for your Destiny,
except yourself.
I say again and again: You are God.
Look at your Life, at your Destiny.
You are the one who Created it.
Do not suffer because of it, but change it.
You have the Power to do so.
No one outside you can change your Destiny.
This is the Divinity in human beings: they themselves hold their Destiny in their hands.
An animal Lives according to its Destiny.
It Lives in a certain known way and cannot live otherwise.
Through Consciousness and the Power of determination, a person can fundamentally change their Life starting today.
Do not make yourself small.
Open your eyes.
Take your Destiny into your own hands.
Turn it in a positive direction.
See the Divine in the World and find God within yourself.
You are already so great today.

Today, many people say that they do not believe in God. One who does not believe in themselves will not believe in God either.

In truth, no one can live even for a moment without faith in God. It is simply impossible! Why? Do not think that God exists somewhere far away from you, that He has a special form, that He is endowed with special powers, and so on. That which is contained in your heart in the form of pure thought and higher consciousness is truly God! This sacred part of your heart is present in every being in the Universe. There is not a single being that does not have such a sacred heart.

Therefore, God is within you, and you do not need to search for Him anywhere. Since such a sacred heart is present in every being, you must firmly believe that God is always present in all people.

“EAT ME AND BE HAPPY,” Buddha said readily.

“Celebrate Buddha Purnima by attaining Purna Buddhi. The Vedas say: ‘Chandrama Manaso Jatah.’ That is, the presiding deity of the mind is the moon. The moon shines with the help of the sun’s light.

Moonlight is cool and pleasant, while sunlight is bright and dazzling. Moonlight signifies Prema (love), while sunlight signifies Jnana (wisdom). Without wisdom, love will not flourish….

Once, Buddha was sitting alone in a forest. Suddenly, a fierce demoness appeared before him and said: ‘O Buddha, I am very hungry. Allow me to eat you.’ Buddha readily agreed to her request and said to her with a smile:

‘There is no need to fear death. Death is inevitable and will certainly come, if not today then tomorrow. You are hungry; eat me and be happy.’

As soon as Buddha uttered these words with a smile, the demoness turned into a dove. ‘O Buddha, I will tell everyone about your self-sacrifice. People fear death, but you rejoice at the prospect of sacrificing yourself to satisfy another’s hunger.

I am not a demoness. I am a dove. I came to put you to the test. Now I will spread your teaching of love and self-sacrifice throughout the world.’

If you turn to your mind, you will hear many voices, sounding sometimes more quietly and sometimes more loudly—a whole host of contradictory advisers who bring you confusion and bewilderment.
For example, as soon as you decide to travel to Puttaparthi to receive Swami’s darshan, these advisers begin their games.
One voice whispers that you should set out only after making sure that Swami is really in Puttaparthi at that moment.
Another voice suggests calling this person or that person to find out whether Swami is in Bangalore or in Puttaparthi.
A fourth suggests an entirely different route and other means of transport, giving you a headache.
This “sangam around jangam” is a gathering of voices that play their games around the voice of truth in order to drown it out.
Another voice may intervene and say: “My dear! Consider your intention from every angle: the journey will cost you a great deal and cause you much trouble, and has it occurred to you that you may not get any ‘interview’?”
Then yet another voice will be heard:
“Oh! Considering all the bad deeds and all the mistakes you have made, it is very doubtful that Swami will grant you an ‘interview’.
But immediately after this voice, another will break through: it will inspire confidence, calm you, and say:
“No! Swami is compassion itself.
He will surely forgive all my mistakes.”

This principle, which protects you and leads you along the path of spirituality, is the lingam residing at the centre of consciousness, which clings to external and internal senses.
